My "On the Kitchen Table" videos are mainly aimed at newcomers to multirotors, quadcopters, drones and UAVs, particularly to the DJI product range, and the Phantom line in particular. I have how to's, product reviews, tips, tricks, hints and information for beginners and those in the early stages of the hobby. I film "on the kitchen table" to show people that, like me, you don't need a workshop and an array of specialist equipment and years of experience to get started and progress with flying these amazing aircraft and enjoying making great aerial videos and stills. So if you have bought, or are thinking of buying, the DJI Phantom 4 or DJI Phantom 3, Inspire 1, Inspire 2, Mavic Pro, Mavic Air or new Mavic 2 Pro or Mavic 2 Zoom, Yuneec Typhoon H, or even building your own DJI Flamewheel F450 or F550, or considering the Lily, 3DR Solo, or more then you can do it... on the kitchen table!

Reading a number of Facebook posts it seems some people couldn’t wait to register and do the “test”. What a shame we couldn’t organise a blanket refusal to take part in this nonsense. Well done to all who have lined the pockets of a few!

I totally agree. Some were even bragging about their scores (on a test the average 8 year old could pass!) Someone else said this in a post I read. But I thought it was fantastic. They said "If you participate, you perpetuate" Wise words indeed. ALWAYS fly safely. Just as we have been doing. With ZERO fatalities.. Like Bruce said "let's see the risk assessment"

I've been flying multirotors with recording facilities for 5 year's now, I am completely self taught and consider myself a competent operator following the drone code and wherever possible logging where I plan to fly with the CAA app, I have no idea what this drone registration is about!!, I've never had letter delivered to my home and no one has approached me to inform me in an official capacity what the drone register is. I will continue to fly my drones in the same manor I always have until such time as I have been officially approached and explained what exactly the drone register is, as far as I am concerned the authorities will be the ones that will have to prove to me in a court of law that they made sufficient effort to contact me and advise me of this drone register scheme because the way I see it, it's like when the government decided all landlords were to have gas safe checks done every 12 months on all there propertys, now this took around 3 year's from the first the law changed cause every singe landlord had to sign a document presented to them by the local authority when renewing there landlord registration. Anyone who fears flying there drone without being registered need not unless they have officially been informed👍👍👍✌🛰🚁🛩😎

I did the much harder French test last month and the UK version as soon as it was available even though it wasn't necessary for me until January 31st 2020. I wanted, like many people I imagine, to see how easy it is to pass with and without mugging up. I wanted to measure how clued in I already was. The French test wanted all 20 question answered correctly and you can't sign up for the test without going through the video training. I did that in the local cafe, and then followed up with the questions in the evening while watching TV. There are some inconsistencies but the questions are fair, and most people should pass without problems. The French certificated are much more formal and elegant. The UK equivalents seem a bit under whelming. I got 17/20 first time through with the UK test and so passed well enough. Its far easier than the BMFA certificates, and won't weed out anybody who is already moderately competent. Its something we've needed for years, so I'm glad we can now spot the cowboys and the backsliders who couldn't be bothered to get insured, or trained and now cannot be bothered to be registered. Looking at the general public, I now can point to my 'licence' and assure them that I have the RIGHT to fly where I do because the UNITED KINGDOM CIVIL AVIATION AUTHORITY has approved me so to do.

I don’t know about the other representative organisations membership numbers but from what I heard last week on a webcast the BMFA member numbers are down around 2000 for this year. And as their demographic leans more toward the more elderly modellers this maybe a trend. Also worth noting that not all of the BMFA members will need to register as many are strictly indoor, control line, and FreeFlight hobbyists. I know of a few in my model flying club who are currently questioning if they’re going to continue with the hobby due to the over regulation. They generally fly from late Spring through to early Autumn, weather permitting, and are now wondering if it’s worth the hassle. I know the general perception of the public is that this is aimed at those with store bought aerial cameras but the whole regulation, and electronic conspicuity for models of a certain class, is going to be very detrimental to a hobby that has demonstrated an exemplary safety record for around the last 100 years.

Once registered and out flying, who is likely to ask for this proof? Is it just police or officials or are you obliged to show the random public who may enquire?

Paul Grep no, but the process give. The public peace of mine, which will reduce confrontations. Also, this is not just about criminal behaviour, there are a significant number of drone pilots out there who still dont know the rules, the new educations element sorts that, and, lets be honest, anyone who cant pass the test, or refuses to take it, shouldn’t be using the sky, for all our sakes.

@@cscape1973 no.. it will not.. the amount of accidents will not move but the publics view of multirotors definitly will.. in the media, multirotors got a bad reputation and they did so the instance hobby organisations let them be labelled as 'drones' in the media..

Øyvind Nilsen Im not sure the name of the craft is that significant. The public fear is actually not unreasonable, small , camera carrying, aircraft above them, being flown by people who haven’t had to prove competence. No I don’t think it’s that unreasonable. I really don’t see why so many people don’t want to register, it’s not as if you are doing anything wrong.....is it?? And as for the test....well, if you can’t pass that, easily, then you really shouldn’t be flying..

@andyd1179
@andyd1179 4 жыл бұрын
Adam Shaw that’s what they said and also the are pleading for a exemption for model aircraft to ID put on the models as it will spoil the replication of the aircraft! They are worried that they will loose even more members come the renewal and that model aircraft making will be hit hard because they have to jump through the same loops as drone pilots.
@cscape1973
@cscape1973 4 жыл бұрын
Andy Dubreuil Photography well, i must say, as a member of the BMFA a BMFA qualification holder, and a scale modeller as well as a drone pilot.....i don’t have a lot of sympathy....saftey is paramount, and model pilots have been getting away with hiding questionable flying for years, i see no reason why they should be except. And as for putting numbers on the planes....this is hardly a big hardship.
@andyd1179
@andyd1179 4 жыл бұрын
Adam Shaw I agree. I understand if it’s a spitfire replica but you could make the code look like the part of the plane like they all have numbers on them. I think that maybe BMFA members feel this is a push so far, but at the end of the day they are using the sky’s and for that reason alone is one why they should have to register. I don’t know how far they can fly in a straight line, but if there is a chance of the pilot loosing connection to plane etc then is a dangerous risk just like a drone. You can’t have double standards the drone is here to stay and share airspace just like RC planes and other flight mode craft.
@cscape1973
@cscape1973 4 жыл бұрын
Andy Dubreuil Photography indeed, the risk with a model is greater than with a modern drone, few, if any have fail safe features, and as a lot of them are hand built, airworthiness is always a question. There is also (although not with everyone) a superior attitude, that flying a model plane, somehow makes you a better pilot than a drone pilot....this attitude is, in itself, a risk factor.

I don’t think you have to register for merely owning a drone, I have around 60 hobby/prosumer multirotors and a further 40 fixed wing models but I don’t intend to register, if at all, until next year in the Spring at the earliest. I may hold out until the EASA proposals come into force in June2020 and then decide if to register or sell/landfill the lot.

@@bmpowellicio Not familiar with the term "Backslider" though I presume it's derogatory. I've over 20yrs in robotics and flight as a hobby. I have proven my proficiency both as a hobbyist and professionally. The vast majority of my models and electronics are self built, including the flight controllers. My antics are fully insured, not just with the BMFA. Yes I am a fair weather flyer but that is not through choice but due to a degenerative illness that hit me around 10 yrs ago. Getting out of the house to a suitable flying site is a struggle and a luxury. So now my contribution is to build or do repairs for folk who've been told their toys are beyond economical repair by the service department. So yes I'm somewhat aggrieved that those with no knowledge now want to impose ridiculous measures onto a harmless hobby and at a later date make my creations electronically conspicuous even though they very rarely go above tree height. I guess that makes me a "Backslider"
@cscape1973
@cscape1973 4 жыл бұрын
The registration only applies to flying drones not owning them. If a drone is flying, it has to be registered and being flown by a qualified pilot. You don’t need to register the drones in boxes under the Christmas tree, not yet.

@@sputniksam Just 20 years, huh. That makes you an expert? And as for being a professional, this is not a profession, its a hobby. There will always be people like you who know better even though you've got precious little to show for it. That you consider the new rules are ridiculous and should never apply to you shows why we need these rules, tests, and penalties to rid this hobby of such vanity.
