I’m trying to explain some confusing from comments as a Chinese people. It is too hard to repair it cause the Great Wall is so long (20 000 kilometers) and was built on the steep mountain (used to defend Genghis Khan, only helicopter or foot to get on there). What’s more, people only do properly maintenance but rebuild for aesthetic so you don’t need to do it everydayXD Anyway, it’s good to see new tech used on classic stuff, isn’t it?

It is about 20 thousands kilometers long in total, according to Wikipedia. Too expensive and not necessary to fix all. But, many different parts of great wall have already been properly repaired. These well repaired parts would definitely be a great place for a several days' hiking. You are very welcome to come China and enjoy your hiking on great wall. BTW, don't be too surprised if BBC only tells "partial truth" when reporting China.

gerald 413 I say the same about the great pyramids, look at our prowess today in building skyscrapers and massive structures yet can’t even maintain these relics of the old world to look like they did back then. Mostly it’s to do with corruption in governments not really giving a shit. Take pride in that at least in Britain we keep our century old buildings and structures looking like they did back then.

George 89 yes and no. I don’t believe anyone in history actually tried breaking through the wall and it acted as a deterrence. However each time China was invaded from the North armies were led through the gates. So its more of a failure of the people than the wall.

@zimyang4852

It worked. That is why many dynasties chose to build new walls or reinforce the previous one. In history, building walls is cheaper than continuously maintaining a army in the north border. And it can also avoid the potential theat from border army to the central government. These walls, protected local Chinese people from being robbed by small group of soldiers from north and effectively cut the economic ties between north and south, which might had greater damage to the north. But, these walls were not very helpful when defending large scale invasions, like 10 thousands soldiers or more. All the major decisive battles between north and south didn't happen near the great wall.
