John. Love the video ❤️. Here is my tip for determining length. After you tie your hook, i do this at the tag end where you use your pinch clip drop shot wieght: make about 3 to 4 overhand knots that are spaced between 2 inches. Then you take your wieght, pinch it on the knot farthest to the end. If your length is not catching bass, move your wieght to the next closest knot (moving closer to your hook) and re-pinch. Cast again. No fish , then You repeat the same steps of moving the pinch wieght until you get the pefect length. In the end, you can adjust the length by moving your wieght to the next knot without hassle. If you are in deep water, pinch your wieght to the knot farthest to the end tag. If shallow water, pinch wieght closest to your hook. This has been a tried and true technique here in ponds in Illinois up north. Happy fishing and tight lines!

Yes sir!!!! I drop shot all the time. Just an hour ago I was fishing my regular spot and the water level is 5 ft below what it was a week ago. The females were all shallow and tight to cover. I used a leader about 14 inches and broke off twice. So I loosened the drag and changed my leader to 20inches & changed my bait from a Morning Dawn 4 in. Robo Worm to a Zoom Trick worm in blue swirl. The bites were solid thumps and I used an old brass wired bell weight. That's because I was breaking off easily and I like holding on to my titanium drop shot weights for better deeper water. I use 3/16oz weights most of the time. I also finesse drop more than power shot. I was using my Baby D Bombs for the tight presentation but they haven't wanted it in the past month. Great advice. Still can't find any Magic worms. But I knew they would be deadly. Thank you again Mr Crews

The water down in the small lakes I fish is more often than not pretty clear with a range of 3 to 4 foot visibility. When my Garmin’s tell me that the weed tops are well above the bottom, I change my leader length with my goal being to keep the lure just above the weed tops to try and draw the bass out.

Great video. I like to use a shorter leader (6-8") with the drop zone weights. I think that the fish are attracted to the sound, and it helps to have the bait right in their face. Instead of up above them. I will experiment with longer leaders. Thanks for the advice!

Thanks John. I do love those new gamagatsu hybrids. That hook needs pliers to get the fish off of it. I use the 2/0 also for power shoting. Leader length can make or break you, that's why it is such a asked question.

Yeah for me that Aaron Martens nose hook is best i ever used. After he left us, i was worried they would discontinue it or rename it and be hard to figure out new name that every time i find them in stores I grab bunch

Love the dropshot, most reliable rig especially when the bite is tough. I generally rig my hook 1-2 ft above my weight on average...in deeper water sometimes 2-3 ft above is money. It depends on weed cover on the bottom and where I see the fish sitting in the water column on the fish finder. In the Great Lakes and Niagara river, heavier dropshot weights are necessary...minimum of 3/8 oz, sometimes 1/2-1 oz is best.

I'm a bank fisherman, so I'm usually not casting into more than 6ft of water. I usually use a 9-12 inch leader to start with but I'll make it longer if I need to keep it above grass

I kind of go by the same theory as AMart’s but it’s all situational. Early in the season (pre spawn) I go short like 5-8” as it seems smallies will feed down and the grass isn’t grown yet. When they are on beds I will go short because I want it to sit right in their face to piss them off. Post spawn I will go much higher, anywhere from 18-24” because smallies feed up after the spawn and they can see if from a distance the higher it is. If I’m fishing grass like what st clair has I will go to where my bait is right above the grass. IMO drop shot hooks are horrible. After trying many hooks and losing many fish I have found MY perfect hook. Since I’ve switched I literally haven’t lost a single fish and that’s the ichikawa mukade #2. This passed weekend I used the same hook all day and caught a few catfish and like a dozen drum while still sticking multiple smallies.

Leader length. This always kept me up at night. Until. Some dude made a calculator. Yes you plug in line, leader, cast distance your height, the height of bow off deck...it all factors in. I thought guy was nuts. But since where i fish no real targets, i kust cast far and slow drag back to boat ( why i purchased your cashion drop shot rod) . Far casts and your bait is not far off bottom based on physics. So my two cents. Say fishing grass and casting far want bait above grass, thus long leader.
