Just about to try spinning, at age 72. My grandmother used to spin. I loved watching her. It was not often as she was Welsh and lived in Carmarthen, we lived in County Durham, Sunderland. I have obviously been looking online. This is the first time I have been able to see clearly, the twist travel. Thank you. I will be watching more of your videos

Hello! I just subscribed to your channel and I am so thankful to have seen your teaching! I just discovered this craft about a week ago and I have ordered 2 drop spindles and have not received either of them yet so 2 nights ago I got my daughter to take me to the craft store and I bought the materials to make myself a drop spindle. Got it together tried to spin some wool and it was compacted so I tried to floof it out and it was a thick glob of twisted wool. So the wool I ordered was in these little multicolored packets and tightly packed. I watched more videos and thought I need hand carders to fluff it out and make rologs so it will be easier to pull out the wool. While watching your video you gave an up close view of spinning the spindle and I could see how much twist you need and slowly let out more wool stop and twist a little more. Anyway, no other video I’ve watched gave that close a view where I could really see how much twist to make like you demonstrated. Thank you so much because I was so frustrated and ready to give up. I’ve ordered my hand carders and will have to find patience somehow although I’m 65 years old and I doubt I’ll ever find it. 😂. I look forward to watching more of your videos! 🥰

I'm not sure what part of the world you're in, but you might want to be wary of "packets" in a multipurpose craft store - they're probably meant for felting and may already be mostly felted. You may be able to get some semi-local combed top or roving (much better for beginners) on etsy, or if you're in the US, fiberlovediary, the spinnery store, the woolery, or paradise fibers.

@@Which-Craft Thank you for the information. I kinda wondered if that may be the problem too. I received my hand carders today and I also received 1 pound of Corriedale roving. I haven’t had a moment to open it up yet. I purchased it from Revolution Fibers. I live in Virginia USA. I wish I could find someone nearby that I can go get a fleece from after I know what I’m doing…🤣 It would have to be washed outside though. I need to learn more about wool. I got the Corriedale wool roving because that was recommended for learning to spin with the drop spindle. I had no idea there are so many different types of sheep! 😊 I better let you go or I will babble too much. Anything you want to alert me to that could help me I will be most appreciative. Hola Marie! After spinning my merino wool, the yarn that I create results very dry and completely loose its softness. Why is that? Should I wash the yarn again before using it for my crochet projects? Thank you for sharing your art.

I always wondered how the drop spindle worked, you gave such a clear explanation! I have lots of wool for felting but never felt drawn to knitting. Can you use the hand spun yarns to weave with? I would find the follow up video on plying very interesting!

Thank you for your lovely comment. Yes you can use the yarns for weaving - they weave up beautifully. I also use them in my dreamcatchers, or to hang things up around my home, or strung onto bunting... various ways to use them. Also, I hear you on the knitting front, but do you crochet? It crochets up beautifully too. I will get the next video made as soon as I can! It's wonderful to see how many people are interested in drop spinning! ☺

I wonder what keeps the twisted fibers together? Usually when you twist something it just untwists back

Wool has tiny hooks/scales on the fibres. This is what allows wool to felt to make , well, felt, and is also why wool garments unless made with super wash yarn, have to be treated very gently when wet. There's always a risk of felting with wet wool. Anyway it's these scales that allow wool a certain amount of "stickiness" that means it holds together during spinning. This is why most newbie spinners start with wool, because it's the easiest. Alpaca, bamboo or silk (to give a few examples of non beginner fibres)are much trickier to spin because they don't really hold together like wool does(alpaca does a bit, but not as much as wool)They're mostly easier spun on a wheel where they don't have to take the weight of the spindle.

@@Амин-т4х I just realized I hadn't really answered your question completely. As to why wool doesn't untwist in the spinning, it WILL if you release tension, however when a wool single(single spun thread) is combined with another single and plied, they hold because partly wool is sticky, and partly because a plied yarn consists of 2 or more singles, all spun in the same direction, which are then twisted together in the OPPOSITE direction. They both try to unwind and because they're going opposite ways, it locks the twist into the yarn. It's incredibly ingenious. Ancient humans were very smart.

Haha! They actually don't affect me too badly afterwards (as in, I don't react to the bites) It's just annoying at the time they are biting me! But if I do get other insect bites, I use a Calendula Balm (made from beeswax and calendula-infused olive oil) It works a treat!

To try to avoid midge bites on an evening walk, I make a little mix of lavender and peppermint essential oils in a carrier oil and dab a wee bit just under my hairline at my forehead or on my neck below my ears - I think it really helps. They mustn't like the smell😂
