Maybe I'm just missing something, but every time I attempt to tune my tremolo equipped guitars this way, it never works. It'll get into tune as shown, but immediately fall out of tune with any use of the tremolo arm (and yes, I made sure to properly stretch out my strings). I saw on Floyd Rose's website their own instructions for tuning with these bridges and it worked for me the first time through however. This comes after near-years of struggling with these damn bridges (and Ibanez's versions of them too). I'll leave it here for anyone else having the same trouble I had. 0) Stretch your strings out as much as possible beforehand (or see the end of this for what I usually do) 1) Unclamp the locking nuts and screw the fine tuners to the middle of their range. 2) Tune the guitar to whatever tuning you wish (don't worry about the baseplates leveling or blocking the bridge at all). *Tune from low E to high E, as usual* 3) After one pass of tuning, check the low E. If it's flat, retune the E, A, D, G, and B strings, but tune them sharper than the target note. If it's sharp, retune with those 5 strings flatter than the target note. This compensates for the change in tensions as you adjust the individual strings. 4) Once you've done this, (weirdly enough), tune the high E TO PITCH. Not sharp, not flat. 5) Rinse and repeat until you're in tune. 6) Check the baseplate now. Adjust accordingly. (If tilted towards the headstock, tighten the claw screws. If tilted into the body, loosen them) But only loosen/tighten a little bit. Do 1/4th turns of the screws. Remember, this will flatten/sharpen the strings, and retuning will readjust tensions at the bridge, causing it to move closer towards where you want it to go. It takes practice to get the estimates right! 7) Repeat 3-6 as necessary, reclamp the strings and the fine tune. Voila! I usually go through these steps, minus the fine tuning, without stretching in the beginning. Once the guitar is locked down after settling everything, I will use the tremolo arm, pulling up on it through its full range, and diving it down and flapping the strings around to help stretch and settle them. Obviously they go out of tune. Then I unclamp and retune. The baseplate doesn't move much, and in extreme circumstances I'll have to do a very small adjustment (1/8th of a turn or so) to the claw screws. I'll repeat this process a few times until the guitar holds tune finally, then I'll fine tune. After this, it holds perfectly. I got my troublesome Edge Zero II tremolo on one of my Ibanez's to finally hold and return to pitch with dives/pull ups using this process. It would always return slightly (but noticeably) flat or sharp depending on which direction I used the bar, but now it's working perfectly. And of course this worked perfectly on one of my Floyd Rose bridge equipped guitars. It's a bit of a convoluted process, and I see the advantages to TTK's method. It saves a lot of time with retuning over and over. I just could never get it to work for some odd reason. Just leaving this here from anyone having similar problems. Maybe it'll help you too!

The info was there but sounded so confusing. You say "Drop D" tune but that would be "DADGBE", in both videos you made you tuned to "D Standard" = "DGCFAB" which is not drop D tune... so I'm literally so confused by this video
@XenoghostTV
@XenoghostTV 3 жыл бұрын
Dude calm down, the information about the tuning he was aiming for is completely irrelevant. The important thing is that you understand and learn the tuning method, so why care about his tuning? Besides, he simply brought his ML1 to E♭ standard, hence E♭A♭D♭G♭B♭E♭ if you want, nothing hard to understand. And please don't abuse the word "literally", because that actually causes me liver damage.

Floyd Rose videos are hilarious. They're like "just use this toothpick and this piece of lobster meat and pray to the god of weather for it to be 79 degrees tomorrow, then find a kitchen towel and shove it in this one little recess, but not this other little recess of your guitar, and you still change the tuning of the other strings by changing one string" and you're basically still effed. Unless you're Steve Vai or Dragonforce don't get one for your collection....just don't do it lol. It'd be one thing if it was just this one video, but look up ANY video on Floyd Rose tuning changes to see the truth. You have to buy accessories, the whole 9 yards...

That sounds like a typical guitar player response (not sharing “secrets”) I remember asking a guitar player how to find the correct key scale to solo, and he wouldn’t share. It would have taken 5 mins to get me started. I also remember when I first started playing, I saw a guy playing barred chords, and asked him what they were (I was still learning opens), and he acted like he had no clue what I was talking about. Nowadays I openly share whatever I can to encourage people to play.

HOLY SHIT. I've been using floyds for about 5-6 years now and 6 out of 9 of my guitars are floyd equipped. So I've gotten to be really quick with changing tunings/strings doing it the old fashioned way, which tune to pitch, screw, tune to pitch, screw, tune to pitch over and over till it makes it. Takes about 12-16 minutes for me to go a whole step. With this way, I'll probably be able to do it in 5 if rushing. Quick question though....does it work for Drop tuning say, Standard to Drop D or Drop D to Drop A#?

10 minutes to drop 1 string (low E string) to drop D to play some Trivium instead of Iron Maiden in standard E tuning is not "really simple". For me it seems far more simple to just work a few days extra this month and buy an extra guitar without a locking trem that I can tune to whatever tuning I want within a minute and then just keep my Floyd Rose guitar in standard E all the time to play Iron Maiden on The PRS SE Standard 24 is 600$ brand new right now for instance, that non locking trem seems to hold it's tuning ok for some light trem use, I think I will go with that instead of spending 20 minutes to drop D and back to standard E every time I want go between the two. And then keep my Jackson SDX with floyd always in standard E, thanks for the video anyways!

My first thought was that the trem might not be level after this method. Glad you showed that it was. Looks like its definitely worth trying a few times. Sure its still more work than a stop tail but its not a nightmare. Do I think it will be PERFECTLY intonated? well probably not but surely close enough considering the only realistic alternative is buying a separate guitar to keep drop tuned. :)

I just want to make sure before I fuck it up completely: After tuning the guitar to D Standard (which I want it to be) I take off the business cards. After this the guitar sounds weird. I open the back but what am I supposed to do? Loosen or tighten the screws? Both of them or just one? (I'd assume both but better safe than sorry...) And lastly, does it then tune itself to what it should be, if I adjusted it right or should something still be done (other than tuning it a little bit if it's slightly off tune. If someone could answer these three questions I'd be happy! Just making sure because it is my only good guitar currently and I don't have money to go fixing it :D

Man I would do anything to live in your area. I'm a guitar player, not a tech. Even at the local music stores around here, the tech's don't seem to understand that when you drop the tuning on a guitar, the ENTIRE intonation has to be changed according to the gauge of the strings being used. Everything from the height of the bridge to the bend of the truss rod. My poor LTD has been sitting in my closet for months because I tried to drop it down to C and have never been able to get it to sound right since. It's in need of a doctor.

Why dont you block it at the tone block? Its a lot safer than blocking it where the fine-tuner-tension-plate is. Not that cards will damage it but you are also putting pressure at a mechanism where you tune from. Just a thought...

What are the cons of doing this? Will it damage the floyd rose over time? I just wanna tune between E standard and D#.

If I just wanted to tune drop d, do i just unlock the locking nut on the low E? If every string is staying the same except the low e, do I unlock the low E and will the rest stay locked in when I tune down to d? If that makes sense 🤣

Why do people keep screwing the tuners half way. You'll almost never have to flatten a string, as they naturally go flat. You want your screws to be almost completely all the way up, so you have more turns to go as strings go flat over time.

Adjusting the springs when the locking nut is tightened sounds mental but I'm going to try it now :) I hope I don't get any broken strings.
