Great general tips. I learned way back in the 80's Not to cut the ball end off at all. Run the string through the tuning peg to where the ball pulls tight at the hole. Pull the other end just past the string lock screws, cut the string, insert in saddle block, tighten down and tune up. With a power winder it takes 5-10 minutes. It leaves no finger stabbing string ends on the tuning pegs. Nice and clean.

I like to see what differences the YTers and myself have on this topic. This is one of the better vids I've seen. Please do not turn your bridge posts while string/spring tension is pushing against them. By turning with tension there's a risk of waring/grinding the knife edge fulcrum point causing tuning instabilities. Not to say this will be your experience. I share this from personally having turned my action up & down anytime I felt like changing it and then noticed a flat spot or dead zone. If I push down and release it would go flat. Pull up and it goes sharp and stays until you push bar down, tap it, or bend a string pulling it back to resting flat. Also the bar won't flutter, warble or vibrate since the fine sensitive knife edge has worn away. I suggest leave the strings locked in and remove the springs so there's no tension against the posts. Quarter or half turn posts, reassemble and check action. Repeat if necessary. Love the two camps of "ball end though the tuning peg" and "throw it in the trash", lol!

Thank you, this video helped me out so much, personally use a dried out wine quark to rest the trem on. I ran into the issue with different string gauges and the trem not sitting flush (always too high) and I never thought to tighten the spring screws. But this also helped me realize that maybe 2 guitars with a Floyd rose is enough for me lol.

First time I changed strings on my old Ibanez RG with the Edge III trem I cut all six off and it took motherf*cking HOURS to rebalance that trem lol. This is misleading & minimally helpful if you have/use Floyd's already.

Great video! I'm planning to get a Jackson X Soloist with a Floyd Rose Special, and something I wanna do is block it off and change string gauge to an 11-56 set for Drop B. However, I dunno how much set up work I'll need to do for the nut.
@andymcmillan9260
@andymcmillan9260 3 жыл бұрын
Nut should be fine because they're normally not traditional nuts. They are a special "Floyd Rose" nut that pretty much allows any string gauge to sit in it because it's a locking nut. The major work is the blocking of the bridge. That's going to be troublesome if you're doing that alone. And kinda eliminates the whole point of a Floyd. But I suppose if Mick Thompson does it (his sig model has a blocked off Floyd because he prefers the feel of a Floyd bridge) then it shouldn't be an issue. You can buy actual locks for them that screw into the body. That way you don't lose sustain.
@kruse8888
@kruse8888 3 жыл бұрын
Sounds like you’ll be better of with the hard tail model. Getting a FR just to block it is(not to be a dick) a rookie mistake. A hard tail is much better for drop tunings and can be easily modded with a brass block for some added sustain.
@kruse8888
@kruse8888 3 жыл бұрын
@@andymcmillan9260 You don’t lose sustain by blocking your trem. You actually gain some. Two pieces of wood does the trick, no screws or glue needed. But as I mentioned in my comment to Heidi, buying a guitar with a floating trem just to block it makes no sense when a hard tail model is available.
@RJW14
@RJW14 2 жыл бұрын
Now for Spring adjustment I've never been able to do that in 1 go, however for intonation, I seem to have a golden eye since every time I eyeball a saddle adjustment it's spot on. Also, the tension bars on the headstock help keeping the guitar in tune when you lock the nut. You set the bar up so that the string makes 1 angle flush over the nut from the fretboard end of the nut to the bottom of the bar.

Thanks! Beginner Floyd Rose user here and thanks to your great instructions, I managed to change the strings and everything went like a charm. I stayed with the same gauge of strings and my Floyd Rose was perfectly level after being tuned correctly. I was a little bit scared of too high tension after releasing the eraser, so I leaned toward the safer side. I wonder if it’s not easier to release the eraser as soon as the strings are attached and tune immediately with the eraser taken out? I also fixed the locking nut only at the very end - when cutting excess string length - so after a few re-tunings. Thank you so much.

Since its not going to effect tuning stability, I always add a few wraps around the tuning post so I DO have enough to reset the string in the locking saddle. Very important as a poor kid with a slightly expensive 1989 Ibanez S Series custom with lo pro II and wizard II and USA DiMarzios in a Blueburst flamed maple top and back. great video, i am looking at a jackson and just wanted to make sure i could be doing my own strings and tuning. but as an aside, i do also wonder how is the floyd rose actually so much harder than the common strat? on my old strat going from 9's to 10's or back again i've done that same adjustment of the two coil springs inside the body from the back, and for any 6-string changeover i've always had to iterate over all 6 strings 2-3 times typically.

At the beginning of the year I finally plucked up the courage to change the strings on my Ibanez S670qm bought from PMT. However like you I’m a bit of a nerd who loves to know how things work especially guitars. I blocked the top of the bridge then took all the strings off, restrung. I removed the block and balanced the strings with the springs with a lot of string stretching which was the satisfying part for me and did not take very long. Finishing with a general set up. Pleased to see that I did it the way you demonstrated. It just seemed the right way to do it.

I change one at a time to on Floyd Rose guitars. It is much quicker because the tune (of each new string) will be instant. Also, I dont like totally taking tension off the neck and putting it back on unless really necessary. Every now and then its worth it for a good neck clean or fret dressing

The only aggravation I ever run into is adjusting those claw screws. Its a back and forth fight between turning and tuning and the bridge ending up like this _/ So I learned to jam a pen under the back of the bridge (like the battery) to keep it level during the string change. Change strings, tune, pull the pen out and the bridge is usually level. Only time that I have to touch those screws now is if I change string gauges or go lower tunings. But I've also learned to avoid that to by just buying different guitars for all that biz ; )..

Because you risk snapping the string at the saddle that way. Hand-stretching the strings or using a tool like the String Stretcha (I prefer using that simply because it does a better job than my hand does at stretching the string evenly. YMMV, as Dagan's obviously does) to stretch the string all along its length avoids having the string stretched at a single point, which is a good way to weaken or even snap it, especially when it's new.

Additional things I've learned over the years: 1. Tune from the middle outwards, alternating from wound to unwound strings. 2. Final tune in playing position rather than "lying down", gravity effects your tuning! 3. After locking off and final tune, stretch the strings using with the whammy bar. Spin it 180 degrees from playing position and quickly push down 2-3 times. Recheck tuning again, then hardly ever tune your strings for the next 3-6 months (unless there are significant temperature changes).

My first floater was '86 Ibanez Roadstar II. I noticed then that if you lay the guitar on its back, the weight of the trem pulls strings sharp. So #2 agreed. I pull on each string to "stretch" or settle it into place before locking and pitch holds after lockdown. #3 agreed. Would you please explain your theory behind #1 since I have never noticed a reason for this starting at middle-out alternating plain and wound? Or am I not understanding? Ty.

It is more about the balancing act of keeping everything in equilibrium as you restring and tune up; the tension needs to be as consistent as possible due to the springs supporting the floating bridge. The more tension you "give" one string, the more it "takes" elsewhere.

You also dont get poked by string ends on the tuning peg posts if you use the ball ends as anchors.

Put the ball ends of the string at the tuners. That way you don’t end up cutting the string twice 👍

Wouldn't help much with those strings because they are unwound at the end.

when you cut the ball off, there is a thick piece of string for 1cm or so which stick well at bridge end when tightened

I always over tighten the low e when tuning up I found it balanced the rest of the strings in half the time. So if I’m tuning to standard I start by putting the low e in f# then when all the other strings are in tune the low e usually levels out back to E

I like playing a FR, I don't like working with a FR during string changes. I have 4 guitars with FR. I still haven't played a better trem though the Hipshot headless comes close.

The best method I found was to place a wooden paint stir stick under the bridge, then remove all the strings, re-string and then final tuning. Very easy and quick way to keep the bridge in almost the exact position as before removing strings. Takes very little effort to replace the strings this way.

T - handle wrench!!! A three millimeter t-handle wrench to be exact. It works wonders in regards to working on a Floyd Rose and the lock in tuners. You'll never use allen keys agin after you've used one. You can thank Eddie Van Halen's guitar tech,Tom Weber for that tid bit of information.

Hi, I'm considering my first FR guitar but worried about bends. if you use a floyd rose 90% of thr time for gigs, how do uou get over this, say for unison bends, without the other stringd going out of tune. Cheers

I've heard a lot of people say to tune the guitar in the playing position because the gravity affects the string tension when it's laid flat on the work surface. But you didn't have any issues with that

Just now finished my first time SUCCESSFULLY stringing my first ever floyd rose jackson and i gotta say, I love that something I've done for the past 15 years can still find new ways to make me feel like a stupid, angry, sausage- fingered toddler baby boy..... ....but now i get to use this cool whammy bar a couple times before never touching it again because I dont sound like Tim Henson the second i try to flutter.

@captainmilk2691

Are you using a very heavy string gauge? A lot of fine-tuners bridges have difficulty with very heavy low E strings. You'll also occasionally see broken fine-tuners or string claws on those strings (claws on Kahlers, bendmasters and Gibson TP6s). What I recommend, take the current string out, apply a little oil to the fine-tuner and get it moving again, then put on a lighter low E string. I know it's annoying having to use lighter strings than you'd otherwise want, but the alternative is potentially breaking something.
