@James skorpio PhD is short for "Doctor of Philosophy". Dr. John Campbell has a PhD in Education and he is not a medical doctor. If you take the time to read the description on his KZbin Channel you will find that he is a "retired Nurse Teacher and A and E nurse". which is not even close to a medical doctor IT STATES IN HIS CHANNEL DESCRIPTION. They should never replace individual clinical judgement from your own health care provider. No material on this channel is suitable for using as professional medical advice.

I appreciate you taking the time to explain in layman’s terms what is happening during this outbreak. People need to understand this is serious. Look at China’s reaction to this virus. It speaks volumes about what is really happening. The CCP wouldn’t react this way if they weren’t scared. Keep up the good work. You’re providing a needed service. Thank you.

Diane, do u wear a N95 respirator mask @ work? In your opinion, is COVID-19 droplet precautions or airborne precautions? I saw a new report from WHO that says it’s airborne for up to 3 hours but most ppl I know are only wearing surgical masks, not the N95. They said it’s only droplet. I don’t believe this. I believe it’s airborne, droplet & contact. The ppl who aren’t wearing the n95 masks I’m exposed to daily. They aren’t wearing the surgical masks due to lack of n95. They are wearing them bc they say this comes directly from the cdc. We’ve all been fit tested so I got my size & put it up for reuse. Any thoughts or advice on this? Everyday I get conflicting info from news, internet, job etc
@RMILLER00374 жыл бұрын
In our infection disease book, it says SARS is airborne, droplet & contact precautions. Wouldn’t this be the same precautions? Is a N95 mask necessary or will a basic surgical mask do the job for protection? I work in healthcare & im really scared. Being scared doesn’t prevent me from doing my job, I don’t refuse care like some, but I want to make sure I’m protected & take every step to prevent spread. I feel like some are taking this way too lightly which is also scary.
@dianesmith33944 жыл бұрын
I still work as a nurse but I’m older and have MS so I couldn’t work the 12-hour shifts anymore. I work from home for an insurance company so no mask here. I do however believe the N-95 masks would be better than surgical masks. I did ICU for about 9 years and know working with ventilators is risky. You have to keep the tube clear of mucus and suctioning causes coughing. Not a pretty picture. I pray for all of our frontline workers.

What Dr John is referring to is the theoretical potential of highly infectious viruses, the sort that as and when they enter a society almost everyone becomes infected very quickly, infection reproduction rates of rO 8, are not unknown, (chickenpox),where the number of 'victims' escalates to the hundreds of thousands per day within a few weeks. The simple fact that this has not happened even in England where no effective controls have been implemented, can only mean one or more of a few things and utterly excludes the probability that this virus is both highly infectious and aerosol transmitted, ther have been at least five million people in Britain infected with this virus, if it was that virulent that number would be much greater.

It was never possible. It has upwards of a 24 day incubation period during part of which the carrier can spread the disease while being asymptomatic. With those criteria, the disease is impossible to stop. All you can do is limit the rate of infection. And after that, you have mutations to deal with. And if the 24 inc. period is correct, look at what is still happening: Governments are releasing people from quarantine after just 14 days.

Thanks for the info. A question: so if the virus is around 0.1micro but N95 masks could only block down 95% of particles larger than 0.3 micron, is it still meaningful to wear N95 or P100 level masks against the Covid-19 virus? Or, maybe these masks could provide partial protection agains droplets but no protection when people get too close to a confirmed patient due to airborne transmission?

It's definitely better than nothing. But only if you know how to wear them and *take them off* properly. If you don't follow proper procedure when taking them off then you may as well not wear one at all, since you put yourself at more risk than if you weren't wearing it in the first place. That said, I've seen several videos saying that it's helpful to put masks on people who are infected since it helps minimise the transmission.

@@Oxytropis1 normal mask does offer some protection, from big aerosol, which is usually is the case because viruses didn't just float around in a form of a single particle of 0.1micron in size, instead it is floating in bigger droplet with water, proteins, oil and other substance that won't dry out easily unless if the humidity is super low they evaporate all the water.

Hello Dr. Campbell. Apologize for my ignorance, but I just read on the wikipedia page "NIOSH air filtration ratings" and on the page it stated the following: "Particles with a size both less than and greater than 0.3 μm are filtered at an efficiency greater than 99.97%.[5] Although it is counter-intuitive that particle sizes of less than 0.3 μm are filtered with a greater efficiency, the forces which have the greatest impact on the effectiveness of filtration (aerosol impaction, interception, and diffusion) are weakest at this size for filters tested by NIOSH.[6]" If that is true, then N95 masks are not useless (given the user know how to wear it properly). Do you have any comments on this? Is this accurate and/or valid for blocking aerosolised virus? Thank you!

Dr. Campbell: your expertise, calm, dedication and common sense are most appreciated. THANKYOU! However I must make a comment about all of the misinformation floating around (excuse the pun) about the inefficacy of various masks. I happened upon an interesting website of a company in Beijing called "Smart Air". Their aeronautics engineer, Paddy Robertson, describes his experience with mask material and HEPA filters including studies done with various droplet/aerosol sizes worldwide with respect to the ability/inability of mask materials to allow/inhibit transmission of aerosols. It appears that the very physics of aerosols is complicated: you are quite right that most masks inhibit aerosols/droplets above 0.3 microns. This is described in physics as being due to the natural phenomena of "impaction" and "interception" by virtue of their inertia in air and subsequent interaction with mask fibers. However when droplets/aerosols drop below the threshold of 0.3 microns another natural phenomenon of "Brownian Motion" (the aerosol particles get bounced around in zigzag patterns and therefore thrown off course so to speak) affects their ability to travel through dense material that masks are made of (due to "diffusion' of the particles... by virtue of their small mass). Interestingly it is at that crucial threshold of 0.3 microns that the mass and diameter of the droplets/aerosols, that things become questionable, due to the intersection of the physical forces of "impaction" and "diffusion" (neither seems to apply at that very crucial size of particle)., therefore 0.3 microns is known in filtration science as "the most penetrating particle size" or MPP. Given that COVID-19 virions are in the range of 0.125 microns, it is their suspension in water molecules which makes the critical difference in size of the resulting droplet/aerosol and hence their potential transmissability through the matted material composition of various masks. The website says that the "aerosol diameter" of COVID-19 (virion plus surrounding water molecules) could be in a wide range up to 0.14 microns, therefore well below the 0.3 micron level. It should be noted that this is bigger than a lot of dust and gas molecules for which dust masks, for example, are designed! I quote the Smart Air website as saying: "HEPA filters capture virtually all sizes of solid particles including those in the diameter of the coronavirus...including particulate matter , solids and water droplets". I am no physicist, and I am assuming, I hope correctly, that neither are you, however being a man of science I thought you might find this interesting. IT is CRUCIAL THAT SOMEONE DO THIS RESEARCH AND MAKE IT PUBLIC, BECAUSE THIS COULD CONFIRM OR DEBUNK THE "MASK DISINFO" AND POTENTIALLY SAVE MILLIONS OF LIVES. ANY PHYSICISTS OR AEROSPACE ENGINEERS OUT THERE WOULD LIKE TO COMMENT? RESPECTFULLY SUBMITTED!
@davebellamy48674 жыл бұрын
Good point! I forgot Brownian motion. That could be a factor here and is a kind of random walk type of diffusion of particles. There doesn't seem to be so much clear info on whether the virus particles are carried in the air dry and how long they would survive - or if they have water or condensation nucleate onto them, in which case the particles would be larger to an extent but the virus might survive for longer. Probably both! ... Either way, social distancing is essential.
@janedouglas3864 жыл бұрын
@@davebellamy4867 It appears to be that the virus is expelled in respiratory tract-generated muscous which is further diffused into small particles by the high speed expulsion of water droplets by coughing and sneezing which may or may not dissipate as aerosols (a relative term with respect to volume) . See some of the testing of robots expelling aerosols on YT.
