I used to live pretty close to that beach! The small, pale snappers with yellow lines and a black spot on their back were Lane Snappers, and the pompano-like fish that the kid caught (which you could also see swimming in a big school above the bait) is an Atlantic Bumper (in the Jack family). Also, fun fact, the croakers that you saw filtering through the sand weren’t typical Atlantic Croakers, but a closely related species called a Spot (generally more blocky in shape and with a larger shoulder spot). Also, HAPPY NEW YEAR!

The fish that the kid caught doesn’t look like a Trevally or a young Jack Crevalle, but after looking back through the video it also isn’t identical to an Atlantic Bumper. To me at least, after a bit of research, it most closely resembles a Blue Runner (another member of the Jack family).

@whatisthishandlegarbage Жыл бұрын
lmao you would die. Nature is sinister in a way because it lures you in with its beauty, but kills you with its conditions. For one, you would have no drinking water because sea water is not drinkable, second, tropical islands are dry and pretty much have nothing to eat, and the jungle rainforest areas are full of poisonous plants and animals you can't even tell until you try. So as much as I also wanna do that, it would be a short life, unless you're at a resort. Not to mention the sun will burn you in the day and dehydrate you with heat, and at night it will be cold and windy and freeze you.

Really neat. I grew up on the fishing piers of the OBX of NC in the 80s, and visited the ones on the gulf side of Florida as well while visiting grandparents. Mostly Venice pier and Anna Maria Island pier. Also Sarasota bay and some of the jetties as well. Funny story, first time we went to Venice pier, we brought our tackle box that worked at the Outer Banks of NC. We started to cast for Spanish Mackerel using Gotcha plugs/jerk jiggers. The first time the locals saw one, they kind of joked it, saying it wouldn't catch anything. They still used bottom rigs, popper bobbers, spoons and maybe bucktails. Our second cast, we hooked into Spanish and slayed them. Let's just say they wanted to buy every one we had. We also landed a nice King Mackerel using a two pole anchor rig, something else they didn't know about back then. We also learned quickly how much of a nuisance pelicans are. We have them at the OBX, but not to the level Florida does, especially Anna Maria.

Today I learned dolphins are smart enough to take the bait off a hook without getting snared. I don't know why this surprised me because I already knew they were smart, but still...
@karanicole2999 Жыл бұрын
Dolphins are smart but they just don't eat everything whole like many fish/sea creatures do. The reason you catch fish with a hook is that they often put the entire bait and hook in their mouth because they are used to swallowing their food whole.
@QwikKota Жыл бұрын
There is a dumb one in every pod. "A guy I know" hooked one and it nearly spooled a 4/0 tuna reel. He cut the line once it jumped in the air and saw what it was. The reel was ripping after it hooked itself.

Ladyfish is delicious and not an oily flavor at all. The meat is mealy and doesn't make good fillets. A vietnamese fishermen in Texas gave me a recipe for fish patties. Some scallions, a little soy sauce, some salt and pepper, I don't remember there being much more to it then that. Scoop the meat off the fish with a spoon while still raw, press into patties with the ingredients mixed in like you're making a burger. They cooked up nice and firm and were absolutely delicious.

I’m from the Clearwater beach area actually grew up on Madeira Beach. I can remember as. Kid my friend and I used to throw cast nets for various bait fish AND for mullet. I can remember times we’d get so much mullet it was hard to drag the net onto the beach. In Redington Shores there used to be a pier called the Redington long pier. It went into the gulf for about 1500ft. Man the monster fish we used to snag off the end of that pier. The pier is gone now a hurricane damaged it so bad it couldn’t be repaired. Lots of memories there. The whole dynamic of the gulf beaches there has changed dramatically since I was a kid. Over development has pretty much killed a lot of the area. It’s way too over crowded now. When I was a kid you didn’t feel the need to lock your doors you knew your neighbors. I lived there until I went into the military it wasn’t my mom died I went back there. So sad to see it now. At least the Pensacola beach area has pretty much stayed the same. If I ever move back to Florida it would be in that area.

How cool. I've always wondered what the fish under the pier do, where they hang out and why. Also makes me happy that the dolphins are smart enough to know not to grab the hook. Less chance of a hook getting stuck in their jaw and getting infected. It's probably a low chance either way but it can't hurt to avoid the hook entirely.
