Vegeta didn’t care for his family at first, but later on he grew to care for and even love them, as evidenced in later DBZ and Super. Unlike Goku, who never seemed to put his family above fighting (except in early DBZ and briefly in the Cell saga) and didn’t grow as a character at all. Ironically, Goku was probably a better father in DBZ abridged than in the actual show, because he actually acknowledged his shortcomings.

Tbf for the majority of Z, goku was the only hope for the world and at times galaxy. If he didn't putting fighting first everyone would be dead. Something everyone seems to understand and allow. (ChiChi knew he was like that from the beginning)

DDnufcGamer Still doesn’t make him a great father though. Or that interesting a character. Vegeta is someone who actually grows and changes as a person throughout the series and beyond, whereas Goku more or less remains the same. Personally, I like Goku the most during the Cell Games (presented by Hetap.) Everyone thinks he’s the only hope, but he knows he isn’t. He spends more time with his son, acting more like an actual father, and is humble when admitting he isn’t the strongest anymore. Unfortunately, his personality is basically reset once Buu comes along.

Raphael Basile agree 100% it doesn't make him a good dad. It just an impossible position for him to be in (luckily for him he enjoys training and fighting more than anything else). He was either a good dad and everyone dies, or saves everyone and is a shit dad. Suppose it fills in nicely with the series that for the most part he is a great human (though a terrible dad), which is something they really pushed in the original Dragon Ball. Also agree that Cell saga is basically best dad goku... Until he throws Gohan under the bus and watches him get beaten up whilst Piccolo, Vegeta, and Krillin try to tell him that Gohan doesn't have the same instinct haha.
