Kind of a novel midwest experience! glad you got just as scared as I do. I punched a hole in 12" of ice this last winter. Left a 15" stub and it punched clean through, no cracks, just a perfect hole. Way faster than an ice auger. Looking forward to your Hawaii adventure!

You can use a very shallow face to spring a limb off without letting it flip. I generally make the face cut slightly deeper than otherwise and have it go in more parallel to the limb, this allows a deeper undercut without pinching. Go full throttle on the back cut so the holding wood is thin enough to pop off when the henge closes. Whatever position the limb is in when the henge closes is how it will fall, if you really don't want a limb to tip at all you can use a simple undercut

@Guilty of Treeson great video Jake; I bet you were missing the West Coast after working in the snow! However, there is something refreshing about working in the cold weather! One observation: did you notice how THICK that bark was initially when you made your first notch/face cuts! Years ago, I remember the 1st cottonwood I climbed while deer hunting = bark was crazy thick!

@kevinhammatgameoftrees7080
@kevinhammatgameoftrees7080 2 жыл бұрын
The rings are spliced into 12 strand hollow braid and have 100 foot tail your stuff them backwards into a bag pull the tail up and then pull the rings up last with a bull rope in them

@@kevinhammatgameoftrees7080 How does the hollow braid handle being pulled through the fork of a rough barked tree to install the rigging rings? I like the idea but if you catch one of the picks on that hollow braid won't it make a mess of the rope?
@kevinhammatgameoftrees7080
@kevinhammatgameoftrees7080 2 жыл бұрын
@@stevehunt4472 we have a 24” Kevlar sleeve on one of our units that is stitched in place to cover where it passes over the limb. We have not had any picking issues with any of them because the weight of the system hauling up the doubled over rigging line keeps everything gliding across the bark. The 12 strand is otherwise abrasion resistant and doesn’t have the risk of failure like a double braid rope would have in this scenario.

When do you decide to use a bore cut on a leaning decayed tree like that? If it's more brush-heavy on top? Or do you just trust the feeling you get in your "throw bag"?
@kevinhammatgameoftrees7080

If dropping this whole tree, a bore cut would have been very prudent. The trunk alone didn’t require it. Great question!

We pull trees away from powerlines all day every day and I've never saw the need for a bore cut. If fact theres a very good chance a bore cut will hinder you if you're pulling a tree with a rope.
