Drouhin Vosne Romanée 2017

Bought from the Harveys Brewery shop (which sells wines and spirits as well as their beer) in Lewes.

I've had quite a wide range of bottles from JD. Their village wines have always struck me as a bit "meh"-not bad, but not particularly memorable either. An exception is their Morey Saint Denis 2017, which I found elegant and truly embodying the soul of Burgundy wines. The Gevrey 1er Cru can also be found at a relatively fair price, and I have found that to be great value as well. However, when it comes to their holdings in Grand Cru and Premier Cru vineyards, like Clos de Mouches Blanc and Les Amoureuses, I believe they can compete with the best Burgundy has to offer. Despite being expensive, these wines are quite undervalued. Especially Les Amoureuses, which to me is as good as it gets. Cheers, Tweedy, and thank you for the uploads.

Thanks Andrew! I don't actually think I have a great nose, I have to work really hard at it to pin down what I can. As an aside my wife and my daughter both seem to have a much better sense of smell than I do, but they aren't very interested in wine. So for me those more "tactile" (for want of a better word) impressions of a wine are often what makes the difference between something I enjoy and something I don't.

@@BurgundyWithTweedy During covid I am sure I lost much of my sense of smell. I now struggle to pick up aromas on food and drink that others do. I find now that the feel of food and drink has been heightened and as a result I enjoy less drinks that are not full bodied. I enjoy beer more than wine and am finding that I am choosing heavy stouts in preference to light ales. The “weight and mouth feel” have definitely replaced the nose.

Hi John, the wrong side of the TBMB (Tweedy Berry Mushroom Boundary) perhaps? As an aside today I have been to Corsham (virtually anyway courtesy of West Country Wanderings), a lovely day out in the Cotswolds and also home to the Methuen family, so why am I jabbering on about this well ..... in 1703 John Methuen negotiated the Methuen Treaty, which, in return for the admission of English woollens into Portugal, granted favourable import duties on Portuguese wines into England to the disadvantage of French wines and thus contributed to the replacement of the drinking of burgundy by that of port. I would understand if you wanted to mount a picket, there is a wonderful park ideal for this, complete with ditches and trees suitable for tarps .... All the best!!

Drouhin is always producing ”ok” wines at a great price, but at least their lower end wines are not the best examples of their region of origin. I prefer Faiveley and Bouchard Père et Fils from the so called big boys (big negociant) of Bourgogne
