I love to see you release those big sheepshead. I worry about their future with all the pressure they’re getting nowadays. If you did keep that monster, I’d be super interested in seeing the otoliths in it. Sheepshead have been found to live over 30 years and I bet that one was at least 25.

I live in Hampton and I fish for flounder a lot. It's been tough, we have a lot of babies around but I've only caught 3 keepers so far. One was yesterday, 20 and a quarter inches. They're still around. If you ever want to fish the HRBT I'd be happy to paddle over there with you and show you around, or anywhere else in the area.

When I fished for flounder, we looked for 40-50 foot depth water around the last demolished de-gausing station at buoy WT2 further north where the Baltimore channel makes a gentle turn near silver beach. We always used a double dropper rigs called "Old Salt". Each drop had a live minnow hooked through the lips and maybe a piece of peeler crab to juice up the bait. Many a citation was landed in that area until the crab dredgers invaded the area during the winters and stripped away to much grass. The current could be murder and when we had to add more than 16oz of lead to stay on bottom; it was time to move. My father always chose to drift-fish. Good days!

This year has been atrocious in NJ. I don't do much inshore stuff just because I can't handle idiots so I'm usually 30 plus offshore and it's been such a struggle with cold water. Usually this time of year we are in the mid to high 70s and last week it was 68. Just before Debbie pushed through it was 74 and I had 2 Mahi one was 21lbs and the other was 19. Then the next trip had 4 from 12 to 18lbs. Then Debbie and 65 degree water and since it's only gotten to about maybe 70 45 miles offshore. I'm only in a 17ft boat so I'm kind of way past my limit going where I go. I keep saying I need to just do some inshore stuff but I just can't 😆. I think Saturday I'm going to go play with Spanish and bonitos that seem to be everywhere around the reefs with some school bluefin mixing in.

That 27 inch Sheepshead would have landed you a Va Citation plaque.Only drawback you have to keep the fish and have it weighted at an official weight station.Makes a nice conversation piece to hang on the wall.
@ChrisJones-fm6wp2 ай бұрын
FWIW, Cherry Grove in SC has it's own inlet so it does have some surprises. The tidal movement there gets pretty nuts, too. The environment itself is pretty basic( creeks or docks) but the flounder and sheepshead fishing is pretty good there. I've caught decent redfish and blues there as well. There are sometimes spanish coming in through the inlet but that and the trout fishing there is fairly inconsistent. This past year I've done almost all of my fishing there since it's the same distance from me (I live near Fayetteville) as all of the places in NC I fish and I can keep what I catch. The biggest annoyance for me is that there's no bait shop nearby so I have to go into the creeks and catch fiddler crabs before I can fish if I'm only doing a day trip. That and having to pay to park unless it's off-season.
