In Norway you should always have 2 bags of sand/gravel in the car in the winter months... You can buy them on nearly any petrol station in the winter... Even when you have snow chains, studded tires etc....

Always keep a couple of bags of gravel (bought in gas stations) and a bag of salt as well as a chain with studs for this kind of conditions (smaller cars can get away with just studded tires instead of chains, but the gravel is still needed). @Luredreier Жыл бұрын
Most of those roads are just fine if you have normal winter tires. This parking lot is pretty much the only place I've seen in his videos that I remember that's actually slippery. But even in this kind of conditions you can drive just fine with studded tires (or for a vehicle his size, chains) of you just being a couple of bags of gravel and some salt for the bad patches/if you get stuck. 12:03 That's good grip road for instance. Of course winter tires are required by law for all four wheels on all cars between the first of November and the middle of March, and chains are required for all four wheels if your car is heavier then 3 500 kg. And this applies regardless of conditions, even on clear dry tarmac. Before November and after March people may still use winter tires of course depending on the conditions, but you're expected to switch when the weather changes or by that date. 13:43 Again good grip conditions from what I can see. Honestly it's just ice that's really, really challenging. Snow is just fine. Slush... Depends... 14:33 He *really* should have used studded tires or the chains... That's not really *that* slippery I think (although it's a bit hard to tell how the conditions are under the snow with that kind of visibility), but it's a lot of wind.
@MispronouncedAdventures Жыл бұрын
Generally it’s only visual, the roads are not slippy at all. And are actually really quite grippy. problem occurs most the time when the temperature rises above zero as ice or wet slush occurs. However, this episode had +6°, which melted everything made it a bit horrible which then refreeze at night and some pretty horrible crosswinds for a van on a pretty normally grippy Road
@MrMudbill Жыл бұрын
And to add to this, for those who haven't been driving in icy conditions: There are some tricks to it that make it much easier than it otherwise might be. For instance, like stated, you can't put the pedal to the metal, or you'll slip, so it's a balancing act. Additionally when you feel like you're slipping, the best way to regain that grip is to stop accelerating, stop breaking, and stop turning (if possible). This is probably obvious to those who are used to it :D But with this in mind, driving on ice isn't too difficult.

@MispronouncedAdventures Жыл бұрын
No, you wouldn’t stand a chance on summer tyres up here in the winter plus it’s illegal as you said. I’m on tyres which meet all Nordic winter tyre rating. 3PMSF & snowflake symbol. most foreigners use the KO2 ( same as me ) and a few locals do as well. Nothing would of helped that night. Winter, studded, A/T tyres. As the ice and compact snow roads had melted with the rain above zero temp in slush. Even a stationary truck to tipped that night
@Luredreier Жыл бұрын
Edit: Apparently I was a bit wrong, please read the comments. /Edit How heavy is your vehicles? Any vehicle heavier then 3 500 kg are required to drive with chains at all times regardless of conditions during certain months (from the first of November to the middle of March somewhere). It's illegal to drive without the chains even on clear dry tarmac in winter if your vehicle is above that weight. For lighter vehicles approved winter tires with a depth of 4 mm is allowed during this period, studs are optional for lighter vehicles. Chains are a good idea if your wheels don't have studs though... Ps. The law require you to have good grip on all 4 wheels in the mentioned months. So 4 wheels with chains or (if your car is light enough) winter tires on all 4 wheels.

@@MispronouncedAdventures Not drive with chains, you have to bring chains with you in the vehicle if it´s over 3,5t. ( over 7,5t if it´s an RV.) For vehicles under 3,5t, ( under 7,5t for RV´s ) there is no law saying you have to drive with wintertyres. Only to make sure you have "sufficient grip." in the current drive-condition. And minimum tire pattern depth are 3mm during winter, and 1,6mm during summer. According to Norwegian law´s "Kjøretøyforskriften § 1-4."
@MispronouncedAdventures Жыл бұрын
Yes my van is under 3.5t. But the tyres I’m using have sufficient grip and are 3PMSF rated to the meet the legal winter needs.
@steinjohansen3142 Жыл бұрын
@Lurendreier You misinform here. No one have to drive with chains if it´s no snow or ice. Vehicles over 3,5t (over 7,5t if it´s registered as an RV) have to bring minimum 3 chains in the vehicle during the winter months. Minimum tire pattern depth is 3mm during winter, and 1,6mm during summer for vehicles up to 3,5t (up to 7,5t for RV´s) Over 3,5t, and RV´s over 7,5t are minimum depth 5mm and "3 peak snowflake"- rated tires and minimum 3 chains (2 for the driveing wheels, and 1 for the steerin wheels.) in the vehicle during winter months.
@steinjohansen3142 Жыл бұрын
@@MispronouncedAdventures I presume your van is registrated as RV, then it can be up to 7,5t without haveing 3PMSF rated tires, or bring any chains with you. ;-)

It can show oil temperature, I don’t remember seeing “exhaust temperature” ( it might be there ) but there is two catalytic converter temperature sensors which are accessible. Don’t know if that would be any use

@PushpaHebbar keep an eye on the weather and road conditions via the Norwegian roads website and Weather apps in poor weather. The road is closed for days at a time sometimes and sometimes it’s only in convoy make it. Some days it can be bluebird skies and no wind. other days The wind can throw the giant snowplough off the road. Come with the expectation that you want to make an attempt to visit Nordkapp, that’s all part of the adventure. Definitely take your time learning to drive on the winter roads safely for your sake and other road users.

About starter motors. Often it's the feature that doesn't starts and just slurs. Then it might be a good idea to use a hammer, and strike a light blow just then. That's often what it takes to start with a bad starter motor. Maybe a bad translation from Norwegian.

@MispronouncedAdventures9 ай бұрын
It’s wasn’t thing I forgot, it was a decision, driving is pretty easy up here once you are used it it. I planned to buy a set up there in the Nordics as they would have a better section of brands and higher quality snow chains than the uk has to offer. unfortunately I was mistaken. It was impossible to find a set which fit my tyres. I have a set.

@MrDieselakare Жыл бұрын
You maybe happy But they ar not very good in vinterconditions.
@MispronouncedAdventures Жыл бұрын
I’m going disagree with you. How much winter driving have you done with KO2 tyres in Nordics? Seen plenty of locals in ditches with studded and other winter tyres. Having only done around 10000 miles in the Nordic winter with them. I never had issues is temps below 0c. Cant see the issue.
@Luredreier Жыл бұрын
@@MispronouncedAdventures There's definitely a huge difference from tire to tire. KO2 looks like a relatively good tire, better then your average summer tire. But look into a proper winter tire, even if it's not studded. Also, what is the weight of your car? If it's above 3 500 kg then chains are mandated on all four wheels at all times from beginning of November to mid March, even on bare tarmac. Non-studded winter tires *are* proven to be better on snow then studded tires, but worse on ice. Both are known to have worse grip on summer roads then summer tires, especially when it's raining. There are tires that's designed to be a decent all-around solution, but they're not really master of any given conditions, and if you use them in the summer they'll wear faster then summer tires giving you less grip when the winter comes. It's not that those all terrain tires don't work, they're just not the best solution for the conditions. That doesn't mean that locals always *do* use the best though... Switching between tires for icy conditions and snowy conditions all the time is a pain, so people usually pick one or the other for the winter...
