My art career was floundering until I employed an elderly highly experienced Personal Relations Manageress ( a high profile PR Lady). She had contacts in the art world , wealthy families and business people . She costs me $1,000 per month . I employ her permanently. She arranged interviews in media , articles about my paintings in magazines, the best galleries to hold my exhibitions , celebrities to appear at my exhibition openings & I miraculously won a high profile art competition which had a $50,000 prize. I sold $270,000 of paintings in first two years of employing her. Now I average $250,000 per year and employ a studio assistant. My advice is to employ a good PR person. 😊 Now I work harder than ever before and the demands are stressfull .😅

@@driesketels . Every country has a well known PR person or persons who mixes with the upper echelons of society & the business world & knows how to utilize the media. Contact one and have a talk. But the PR person has to like your paintings and believe in you as an artist . Otherwise they wont waste there time in promoting you.

So how do you find this PR person? Do they advertise? Where do you look? Many artists are giving galleries 50% form their sales. Even THIS is not much because otherwise you may not sell AT ALL and might need a job to pay your bills. That even if you are a very talented artist, an artist who spends weeks or months for each artwork. So you go with anyone because any sales are a way out of a job and to gain a foothold to hold that professional artist status. A thousand dollars a month sounds like a bargain IF you can sell for much more than that! So where and how do you find such people???

Biggest problem may not even be AI art. Biggest problem is that most artists work is hidden in their homes and never gets to see the light of day. This includes talented artists who worked over many years and not just artists who are just starting out looking to boost their creativity confidence. Some of these artists includes artists who worked over decades whose work just cannot be discovered because of the following reasons. I am talking about that 99% of artist submissions to art galleries gets deleted, never reviewed, never answered, etc. Any artist including those watching this probably knows what I mean. Another problem is that trade fairs are very expensive and moving expenses to move artwork back and forth between trade fairs and traveling expenses adds to the costs on top of that, for artists often not having any return on their investment after spending thousands for trade fair costs. So if you are a buyer you should understand that most work that exists you do not get to see. You only see a very a small portion of it. You do not see work by many talented artists who have decades of experience.

At 54yo I am just now seriously looking into creating art to sell. A scary prospect for me, but i can no longer do the type of physically demanding jobs I've always done. I've spent my life being pushed away from thinking i could make a living from my art, by my parents and then others who relied on me earning an income to take care of them, and eventually completely got away from creating art altogether. Amd now here i am with a lifetime of regret for it. And absolutely no idea how or where to even begin.

@@driesketels thank you for the supportive comment. Some background, which may sound bizarre to you... Art and music run in my family from both sides, from my father's side mostly music and I played in 3 fairly locally popular bands throughout my teens, and still a hobbyist guitarist. My mother's side is where the art comes in so here's the bizarre bit. My Papa when he was young came from a wealthy family in New York, and at one point he was asked by Norman Rockwell and a partner to be their apprentice, they approached his parents, who said "no" because they wanted him to continue and finish ministry school. Later in life he became a machinist, did fairly well, but he also married my nana who wasn't approved so he was black listed from the family and became an alcoholic, but he continued drawing and painting and luckily I have some of his work still. He was the one who brought out my artist side, always drawing with me, teaching me. I chose commercial art when I attended a vocational high school, and had a teacher who sent pictures of my artwork and a letter to marvel comics (back in 1985), He surprised me one day with the reply letter, that after graduation I'd have a position if I wanted. My father talked me down from it, and I also didn't like the idea of living in NYC. so I blew my own opportunity early, and wound up in physical labor/skilled trades. I did continue with always making various forms of art, not just drawing and painting, my style was like Frank Frazetta one of my favorites, and also doing scenes of Edwardian and Victorian architecture/scenery. The only time I did make some money from my art was doing custom pieces for people for tattoos and random tattoo flash which a few shops bought. And then I wound up marrying a woman who felt me doing art was "childish/not manly" so I just stopped, rather than be badgered about it all the time. So that's my sad woe is me story... I had tried at one point to get into selling my art as a freelancer some years ago, and to create art for some magazines etc, but I found that when the topic of not having a college degree in art, people with lesser skill/natural talent were chosen, so I gave that up as well. I do plan on getting back into it, but I find myself procrastinating, with a head full of negativity from years of allowing others to push me away from thinking I can make money from it. That is the biggest hurdle for me in all of this, that feeling of "this will only fail" and having absolutely no idea where to even start or to display artwork for people who may be interested. Sorry for the long response but, there it is

And yeh, sadly as a male who always worked in the labor/skilled trades I can't even find a job in such fields due to my age and obvious physical issues, I'm a walking insurance disaster for companies, and I can't hide it, and I have zero experience in other types of work, no employable skills, and no college degrees. I can't even write up a resume because of so many years of not working due to personal matter related to my ex wife constantly dragging me into court, even though I had sole physical custody of our 2 children. It cost me 3 jobs over 15 years, and one potential job and wound up forced to get into welfare, which was horrible. Then once my youngest was to turn 18, thinking of be able to try finding a job, both of my parents got really sick, my father passed in 2019 and I became the care provider for my mother who had acute myloid leukemia as well as other issues up until Oct of 2022 when she passed, my physical health declined over all those years and now I'm in limbo. I have some money from selling my parent's home, but it won't last forever so... My only hope now, is finding some way to make money from my various natural talent, But the hardest part is just "where to start, and how" The world has changed so much with this sort of stuff. I guess I just have to actually "do it" but that is the hardest point to get to, especially with a head full of negativity created by others for so many years.

@@warthogA10 I started painting a few years ago, just to decorate my apartment. Then started hanging some at work. I get lots of compliments and a couple of coworkers have asked for commissions. You mentioned getting past the negativity in your mind… just start creating for yourself. Experiment. Find your style. You’ll surprise yourself! Even so, I still struggle with negativity. Actually, it’s fear. I never know how a piece will turn out. I hate wasting time and I always worry I won’t be able to produce another good one. Maybe I was just lucky the other times. Maybe I should be doing something more productive. Why would anyone want what I make? And so on… I’ve walked away from half finished pieces for months at a time bc I didn’t know how to proceed and was afraid of trying and failing. I still deal with these fears haha But I keep going anyway!!! 😂 If you don’t want to do it, fine! You’ll just do something else. But if you DO want to do it, give it a go or you’ll regret not at least trying. Don’t wait for the fear to dissipate bc that’s just an ongoing battle for a while. You got this 👍

Just had an observation while I was appreciating your informative video. In the old days, we had apprenticeships. A student learning from an experience teacher, who passes down their experience to their apprentice, as well as the collective traditional knowledge that was passed down to them. We don’t have that anymore. We are all islands. I do believe we are poorer for it. “Knowledge” has been institutionalised with a piece of paper you get for attending classes. But so much knowledge, skills and nuances have been lost. We don’t even know what we don’t know.

This was extremely interesting… For a few reasons, I was recently approached by an art dealer because he was impressed with my paintings since I have a rare condition that causes blindness and although I can still see a little bit I am rapidly losing my eyesight… He thinks he can sell my art with this element is the main point… although I’ve been an artist my whole life I’ve only been doing it professionally for about two years now. So personally I don’t think my skill level is to that of some of the artists I look up to. Having said that, it’s much better than it was when I could see well. Also he thinks he can sell to Sotheby‘s of London, so I found some of the things you talked about in this video very compelling as to why he might want to represent me.

That sounds like a very painful reality, my condolences for your situation. And I hope your health doesn't decline too much from here on forward. On the bright side it does indeed sound like a very powerful story and a very powerful restriction that elevates the artworks. @@MaryRevery lol :-)I don’t think it’s anything special, I’m kind of fixated on female portraits, and watercolor… Slightly loose with a pop art element, a lot of abstractions in the background and hair… I also do pastel abstract, geometric cubism… He has encouraged me to do a KZbin channel to gain exposure and show my process since it’s a little unorthodox due to my adaptive needs. But I find quite a lot of obstacles with technology because I use adaptive tech even to write this text it’s all voice overcomment when I check what I have voice texting sometimes I can’t go back and correct it I have to erase the whole thing and start over lol

I have mild parkinson symptoms and struggled a lot for years to develop and perfect a photography technique that achieves pitch perfect focus and sharp images. But now I embraced my condition, my bad micro movements, to do ICM photography, which is so joyful for me because I can create photographs that have in them the natural movement my hands have, extremely blurry images that end up looking like paintings. I also have miopia and developed a photography series of out of focus photographs that look like paintings as well. Interesting but not that worthy of praise, but the story behind those pieces might be of some value, at least microscopic value. Also your video made me remind of a guy that conected himself to a machine that drew blood from his body to print an image. I discovered it years ago when I was looking for crazy ways to get noticed in the art world. Crazy things for sure, nothing as powerful as having rich friends of course. One of the crazy ideas I had to get famous back when NFTs where a thing was to anounce myself as an artist that does art for money laundering. Like, is something that already happens, I might as well just directly anounce it and put myself out there for that business. Do a video on how I charge for the money laundering schemes and all. Of course as a critique but one that I think would get at least some media attention. "An artist that anounces himself to money launderers", at least some media outlet would find it interesting to then talk about money laundering in art and NFTs and what not or whatever. I have dozens of ideas like this that I think would get outrage and virality but that I never did due to my ptsd, childhood trauma insecurities depression whatever, but my girlfriend has the instruction to publish all my ideas and scripts and everything when I die so maybe one day people will know about them.

My left eye pupil has defect since birth,something developed wrong in womb,right eye during life been changing,compensating vision and result is I see as with 3D Glasses on....for over 40 years I been trying to paint as others and just now starting to paint in way to show others how I see..Sooo fun and satisfying to finally accept ones condition and just do the best,have fun.Losing fear to have art that looks not like other people art,maybe childish,too bright and colourful but it’s mine and unique in its own way exactly cos I’m allowing my condition to express it self

I only started painting at 36, painting the big 5 on paraffin glass flutes. The next 7 years I painted on self made canvasses and was invited to join a gallery but my husband refused to allow me to. He passed away and I had to get a full-time job so only did a few commissions for the next 20 odd years. Then came the virus and I was put on early retirement and I decided that this was the time to paint again. It has taken me 4 years to gain my self confidence and to take myself seriously... Difficult when you are flat broke. But I am now painting every day and I know that I have finally committed to my unique skill set and I have faith in my art. I have a KZbin channel but I am hesitant to begin uploading my process because I know that I don't have the right camera equipment. So in the meantime, I paint every day and I am happy with my progress. Upward and onward. Curious to know what Dries thinks about starting a KZbin channel??

Great video. Personally, I find that my buyers appreciate that I charge by the inch. It’s fair and objective, allowing them to focus on the subjective matter. I also NEVER decrease my prices or have flash-sales. My prices only go up. I haven’t asked them this, but I believe it helps them to view my work as investments. The piece they own will never be less than what they paid for it.

I price my art based on how many hours I spent on the piece and its intrinsic value. I’ve never been questioned about my pricing as my prices are comparable to what other similar works are selling for. It’s about knowing the value of things and your market. Yes, I’d also sell a piece for £1000 in a small city in the U.K. and £10,000 if in Dubai.

to answer your question I seen some art work going for 100,000 dollars I would not paid 5 dollars for. So it is very subjective. So believe and sell to the right buyer.. I seen some stunning work for 7.98 it broke my heart . Thank you Sir. I wont sell my art for 20 bucks

If an artist does not want to earn a living from art, and or does not want their artwork to be adopted and employed by other autonomous beings, then that artist should keep their artwork at home, and enjoy it when they get time off from their main job.

You make a good point in the time it takes to develop a skill, regardless of what it is. A doctor or lawyer spends years gaining, honing their skills which is why they can charge as much as they do when you go to them for a consultation or treatment. They didn't use Google to look up your problem they gained the skills to pinpoint exactly what your problem is and how to treat it.

Those are some interesting thoughts. Would love to hear you elaborate a bit more on these topics. I'm not familiar with the aboriginal art scene. But the chinese factories that you are talking about don't really concern me that much. These factories primarily cater to demands for affordable art or reproductions. The artists working there can be skilled, but the mass-produced nature means the work might lack the unique touch or message that individual artists bring to their creations. I don't see them as competition to be honest.

@@driesketels . You are out of touch with what is going on in the art world in 2023. 1) Since 1995 Australian Aboriginal Desert art is considered the most modern form of expressionist art . Do a KZbin search on the topic or look up Kudditji Kngwarreye or Tommy Watson . Paintings by popular Aboriginal artists sell for many thousands of dollars. 2) Western artists send a few paintings to Chinese art factories and request multiple copies. Once the copies are received back , they are slightly amended by the Artist and signed , then sold for thousands of dollars.

@@driesketels I live beside Tate Modern in London UK, I saw it there quite a few years ago. I have seen very shiny crystals and small diamonds, like on jewellery etc, but nothing prepares your eyes for this extra ultra dazzling blinding array and I wasn’t expecting it. Hi Dries, first of all, thank you so much for all the good stuff. I watched many of your videos recently and I’m not sure if I’m in the right place here to ask this question. I’m an intuitive/spiritual/visionary artist. With other words, I paint spirit guides like fairies, angels and light beings and ascended masters like representations of Buddha and Mother Mary. I also sometimes paint abstracts. I do this in a rather illustrative style. I have done some research and I think that my art is not belonging in art galleries. Now that’s ok, I do what I do, but I don’t want to waste my time researching the wrong venue. What do you think? And if you think I’m correct, do you think there are existing galleries interested in this kind of art and if yes, how do I find them? If galleries are not for me, I plan on focusing on social media and wholesale in New Age shops for my printed merchandise. Thanks! Keep up the good work! ☺

To my knowledge we don't actually know when this story happens, the story has many versions it might even be an urban legend, I don't think there is any proof that it happened. I personally believe it happened but I'm not sure if it actually did or when it exactly did. the hair most definitely it looks hot haha, but fr as a creative I relate a lot to the pricing part (I used to paint a few sneakers), I've been telling this story of picasso and the napkin myself to others. great example, why pricing per hour never works for artists imo.
