There are in excess of 36 symptoms of menopause and many women don't relate these with menopause and undergo test after test with their doctor which throws up nothing. If these symptoms were more widely recognised women would not suffer unnecessarily and would get the treatment they need, which in most cases is HRT.
Also; blood tests are also not needed in most cases, when a woman is over 45 years old a GP should make the diagnosis on symptoms and treat.

Women’s sleeping issues (insomnia; awakenings) that develop at perimenopause can improve with Rx progesterone used at bedtime. Before I started that at age 46, I was really functioning at about 30%. It’s astounding what women endure and how inadequate the current medical system is with responding and addressing these issues.

The joint/muscle aches are so painful and so debilitating. I was referred to a rheumatologist and had never realised this was a symptom of perimenopause. I went from being someone who enjoyed running and doing boot camp workouts to having to cliterally crawl up the stairs to bed at 9pm every day. Hearing you describe these symptoms brought me to tears as at least now I know what is happening to me. I've started HRT 2 weeks ago.

Hi Renee, having experienced all the symptoms you mentioned and tolerated them for 10+ years I understood it was too late for me, I'm almost 62 I started on HRT 5 months ago. I can honestly say I am feeling the best that I have felt in a long time! I'm sleeping better, the brain fog is clearing IV got more energy and less anxious than usual. The hot flashes have gone and also my vagina feels normal again. I am taking 100mg of utrogestan when I go to bed and 1 pump of estrogel in the morning plus the vagirux twice a week. I feel so greatfull and blessed. Thankyou for all your advice and compassion on the subject. Xxx

Thank you Dr for sharing an open and honest description of Menopause not just the basics. Thank you also for asking other Health professions not to fall into the trap of prescribing anti depressants just because they can. Menopause is frightening and life changing. Men need to be educated also as they fail to understand how ashamed a woman can feel when she's dismissed. It is a sad time too and we often feel less than and isolated. The big sacrifice is when there's no support and we have to struggle in work daily. It's so stressful when self employed as there's nowhere to go.

Don't know about my Mom as we've been estranged for many years. I was honestly afraid there was something wrong with me, untill I found these videos. Immediately my anxiety subsided some. I am 64 and entered the menopause at 55. After three years I began taking HRT but unfortunately I never got the dosage right and continued to have some problems . Last year I took a break to see where I was naturally but have recently resumed. Over time I have noticed that many of my menopause symptoms have come and gone but some have persisted, namely hot flushes, mood swings and anxiety in the form of a jittery sensation in my body. I know many women in a similar position and we are desperate for our hormones to settle so this horrible journey can end.

@@RK-su4hs "Medical studies have proven patients that undergo chemotherapy have no longer life expectancy than patients that don't have it". You can't clump breast cancer into one single basket. Thank you Dr. Renee. I felt so much relief after watching your video. I am post menopausal now (2 years) and it's odd but I'm now experiencing hot flushes, joint pain and indigestion and others. I have been to several doctors and done bloodwork, sent to rheumatologist but thankfully so far nothing has come up but they won't give me a definitive diagnosis yet. I feel that when I even mention if it could be related to menopause and the drop in estrogen, I'm practically dismissed and not listened to. I see there is a serious for practioners who understand the complexity of menopause. The only symptoms that seems to be mentioned is hot flashes but I realize that there are so many more! I live in New York but so wish you practiced here but I am so grateful for you for sharing this valuable information with all of us. Thank you so much!

Hi I have just come across your vlog and it has helped hugely thank you 😊. I have been in and out of hospital 4 times in the last 6 months had numerous tests after having a really bad period which didn't stop for 6 weeks solid. I ended up anaemic. Suffering dizzy spells panic attacks anxiety. I was finally discharged from hosp the last time after 9 days as an inpatient with antidepressants saying it was all anxiety related. No mention of peri menopause at all. Even tho I had missed periods light and heavy ones and numerous symptoms. Needless to say anti deps didn't work infact made me alot worse! I'm now awaiting an appt for coil to be fitted and will start hrt as I have nearly all the symptoms you have described! fingers crossed it helps I at the end of my thether! I'm 48 😊and never knew that the menopause could be so debilitating! Knowledge is so important !

All doctors thought I was crazy when I mentioned hormonal changes...because I was “only 40” Even though my periods were irregular and practically zero estrogen and high FSH along with night sweats. Went through multiple tests the last couple of years. I got diagnosed with vestibular migraine recently...a male neurologist told me it happens with hormonal changes. Terrible anxiety because I feel unsteady all the time. I just started HRT patch a couple months ago. Too early to tell. Fingers crossed. I’m 52 now and my period has been coming less frequently the past couple years but it will be 3-4 months between at most. I developed migraine headaches at about 45 and that has been my single worst symptom. I’ve had to radically change and limit my diet as number foods trigger headaches and migraines for me. I’m on a primarily carnivore diet now with all types of fresh meats, some dairy including butter, yogurt, cream cheese and cottage cheese, eggs and some nuts. I’m very active and I cycle most days and my weigh is ideal. My other symptoms are joint pain in hips, knees, big toe, occasional arm pain, sleep disturbance quite severe, heart palpitations, vaginal irritation and dryness, thinning hair, fragile brittle nails, and now suddenly depression as well. I asked my doctor about hrt and antidepressants but she only gave me the antidepressant and while that’s helping significantly I can’t believe she said I’m too young for hrt! When is the right age in her mind? It’s ridiculous. Honestly, I have already been using estrogen and progesterone creams that I buy online for several years because I needed something and didn’t have health insurance for a while. I do think it helps a bit but I’m not sure how much. I do know when I don’t use the estrogen cream my vagina gets really sore and dry immediately and if I don’t use the progesterone cream at bedtime my sleep is much worse. I have yet to have any hot flashes or sweating so that’s good! My mom breezed through menopause but my sister and I are not having it so easy and we have nearly identical symptoms. She’s 3 years older than me and I’m following exactly in her footsteps except that her headache issue isn’t as bad as mine. When I start feeling worse in any significant way I’ll either demand the hrt or switch to a doctor who will give it to me without it being a federal case. Thanks for your video….super helpful and informative and supportive!

I saw so many drs for so many things with no answers no help. I even asked my gyn at 38 about menopause, based on what little I knew from main stream media. She laughed and told me I looked great and was decades away from menopause. The symptoms you list mounted. I felt lost and alone. At 45 3 mo in a row my period was 10 days late ea mo. I felt awful after 20 yrs with same gyn I found a new one. She was 48 and perimenopausal & understood completely. Thing is she told me most likely perimenopause and had yrs of this agead, I said perhaps but I feel like everything has plummeted. Rock bottom is how I felt. She ran labs and sure enough all hormones below normal and fsh very high. My testosterone and progesterone had been low for yrs and sex binding hormone was very high. Neither gp or gyn were of any help as to cause. They focused on my aesthetic. That I was very active very fit and had a very good diet . Acted like I was silly to say I felt poorly. New dr was trying to help but covid came and she was high risk and after getting ill stopped practice. At least I had some info to go on. With drs like you and Barbara Taylor, menopause Taylor, I have hope of building a good management plan. The sadness over perceived loss of youth etc is very hard. I personally have found 60 mg organic saffron daily a huge help for mood. Thank you for helping women. You are beautiful by the way. :)

Thank you Renee. I can probably tick most of the list of symptoms you mention and do need to go to the doctors myself. I'm 52 next month and definitely going through the menapause. Also I work as an occupational therapist and for the last 11 years have run groups and provided therapy for people diagnosed with fibromyalgia. As about 90 % of those attending the groups are female, many of perimenapausal and menapausal age experiencing similar symptoms, I wonder if many may have been misdiagnosed! I've heard so many horror stories of the journey to diagnosis and the many tests that come back normal. The self-esteem/psychological issues of not being understood or believed in addition to socio-economic factors may be as a result of or in addition to, the menapause (, the latter which is seldom been addressed as even a factor perhaps). I would appreciate any thoughts you may have regarding this, thank you Kathleen

Hi Kathleen. I have been saying for a long time that I believe many diagnosis of fibromyalgia, especially for women 45+ are actually under treated menopause and should be treated with HRT. Sadly many Gp’s don’t recognise the joint pain and myalgia of menopause and so misdiagnosis/being ignored is common and damaging. Makes me sad.

I have been diagnosed with fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome last year, I still can't quite accept the diagnosis as it feels like my issues are more complex, also got prescribed antidepressants for last two years due to having mood changes and anxiety, they helped a bit at first but no improvement since despite still taking them. I also have autoimmune graves disease which affects thyroid, and thyroid eye disease (both under control atm) . Endocrinologist gave up on me as my symptoms were not their concern as soon my thyroid was in range. I think my graves could have kick started the process of perimenopause prematurely, which on top of all its long list of symptoms, exacerbated my ADHD. Its sad and shocking that, with all my health problems I've been dealing with for last 7 years, not a single doctor (and I've seen quite few of them) mention anything about (peri)menopause, and despite countless blood tests and exams, never had any of my hormones(except of thyroid) checked.

Thank you so much for this! I am 48 and have been suffering the most horrendous migraines (which I've had since I was a teenager) which are debilitating for several days a month and are often followed by a day of dizziness and difficulty in focusing. I try to stay fit, a good healthy weight, and take lots of exercise and yet never feel any better for it. Recently my hips and joints have been feeling so sore and stiff and it's quite frightening. My nails are also crumbling, when they've been beautifully strong all my life. Thankfully I have no sweats or hot flushes as yet. I have a good GP who has made an appointment with our local Menopause clinic to discuss HRT options. Quite honestly can't wait to start, and it's horrendous how many women suffer from this dreadful list of symptoms.

I too consider myself healthy, exercise daily, eat well, sleep well, minor hot flashes (although on progesterone and estradiol)... going for proper HRT soon. Been fully menopausal for 3 years. Woke up dizzy 6 months ago and then went through a barrage of tests (ENT, ear crystals, MRI, blood test) all fine. I'm convinced it is hormonal... no migraines, just constant/daily fatigue and dizziness. It's like I wake up every day feeling hung over. @Dr Renee BTW I cried through the entire video. :(

Thank you, so much, for this! I'm 56 now and just about 1 year w/o a real period. Early this year I started getting really dry vagina. I've had no vaginal discharge at all--I thought, "Great! Makes me feel so clean!" Well, then sex became very PAINFUL!! Then, as well as very dry, itchy skin all over, I started feeling like one of those little cute white, furry-looking moths was under the skin of my mid back! Felt like it was just fluttering it's wings & walking around in there!! Also, I'd get a feeling like someone would touch me on the shoulder or the top of my head! And, also, now starting to feel like I'm vibrating inside my whole body!! I guess I'm in menopause now! Just started vaginal estradiol cream .5 grams. Hope this helps! I'm still scared to take the HRT 2mg pills w/the 10mg pills my gyno just prescribed for me!😧

Thank you for this information, which is well presented. In addition to many of the symptoms you have noted, I have had a buzzing/vibration sensation through my body which wakes me from sleep, and is now starting to affect me during the daytime, for the last 18 months. Have you heard of this please? The gp has just dismissed me, saying this is unusual. I have tried to talk about hormonal issues but I feel gp thinks I'm imagining all this and he shuts me down. I had a full hysterectomy with ovaries removed 14 years ago, also thyroid removed. Until the last 18 months I haven't had any menopausal symptoms. I am 69.

It was so bad I thought it could be very serious but different issue. It is consistent pain in the tendons in that area and extremely debilitating. My GP did all types of tests etc but only through my own research I came across the fact that it could be the perimenopause. I’ve been on HRT for 6 months, the pain has reduced considerably, but comes up just the last week of the 2 testosterone patches. I agree with @Fabiola , I'm 42 and have SO many symptoms, like yours (and a family history of early menopause), PLUS joint pain, reflux, psychological symptoms, sleep problems, dryness etc etc. Its incredibly frustrating that doctor's don't talk about this or warn you earlier to watch for or expect these changes. My Dr just said, "yeah it sounds like perimenopause...not much to be done about it." 😐 I agree with Dr. Renee. We need to normalize talking about all of these things. It's so stigmatized. If These were things men experienced, there would be money thrown at it and research done to find solutions.

Hi Dr Renee, This was a great video. Thank you. I'm 45 with at least 20 perimenopausal symptoms. I've no history of breast cancer in the family or heart disease as far as I know. I've been prescribed the Evorel combi patch and am just at the moment on the estradiol part of the prescription some of my symptoms have been improved, some haven't and I have new symptoms also. I'm a bit nervous about taking the combination part of the prescription due to the synthetic progestogen. For a long time I've tried to avoid anything that is hormone mimicking and this enabled me to lose weight. Now I'm perimenopausal I'm gaining weight, have occasions between switching patches where the mood swings return and I have a history of migraines and headaches. Is there any reason why my doctor could justify refusing me a combination of the estradiol only patch and the utrogesterone pill?

Im 59, just started getting hot flashes this year, last summer. Seems to have subsided but that may be due to cooler temps of autumn. All that you've described is hitting me..seemingly all at once. I'm beginning to feel old...stiffness, dry hair, dry mouth, muscle cramps, a little depression, dry vg, dry skin, mood swings, cry at a thought, insomnia, early awake, late to sleep...I jus want constant calmness. My concentration seems to still be there, I'm not experiencing breast tenderness, fullness or bloating...on the contrary I'm eating all the time. There are days i feel like I'm just staying hungry. My motivation is leaving...I'm having to do things without thinking on it so I don't change my mind. Lol. I want natural remedies only. I do not trust medication. I eat from the earth lately...meat even feels anathema. I was a pescatarian but fish began itching my mouth and so believe I've developed an allergy to it. How can a woman so quickly move from a smoothe sail to a daily reminder the body is withering. I am determined to find an offset!
