Excellent video. I completely agree with the 'best I can do' philosophy. I will apply SPF in the morning in winter and then beyond that I relax. Life is too short.

Stunned that I have sun damage with my deep tone African American skin tone, I now use sun screen. It’s been a journey but I also find sunscreen even helps with eczema and certainly hyperpigmentation and large pores. I am a big on lunch walks so I reapply at lunch because I generally don’t wear a foundation a SPF 50. I minimize after work as best I can and my skin has been on the mend the last 18 mos. I went to dermatologist for skin tag that was annoying and mentioned my face issues. It’s not 💯 yet but mask has diminished greatly and pores are no gaping either. Thank you for the video.

I love that you are truthful about reapplication. Reapply every 2 hours is ridiculous. We have such good filters in Europe that stay stable for like 10 hours. Having said that I do reapply sunscreen on certain parts, if i eat and run my lips wih tissue, i will reapply tiny amount around my mouth etc. I'd say in general i apply 3 times a day.

I don't understand why they don't do a study in order to know if the one layer of sunscreen that you apply in the morning will protect you throughout the day, if you stay indoors the whole day. That's a question everybody's asking.
@nelipescaru7713
@nelipescaru7713 5 жыл бұрын
kindofstephen.com gives us the answer to that: All sunscreens should be reapplied if you want to maintain photoprotection throughout the day. While it’s true that titanium dioxide and zinc oxide (known as physical susscreens) don’t change structure under normal UV radiation, that’s true for many organic (chemical) sunscreens and sunscreen formulas as well. The reason why reapplication is recommended is because we often don’t apply enough in the first place and it’s constantly being removed from our skin. Reapplication helps ensure that we have a minimum density of 2 milligrammes per square centimetre of sunscreen on our skin and that we maintain that density throughout the day. We may not be conscious of removing our sunscreen, but touching our skin, putting on and taking off clothing, using our phones, sweating, blotting, eating…all these things will remove some of the sunscreen from our skin. Think about how the coverage of a foundation or lipstick changes throughout the day. There is no clear answer as to when you should reapply your sunscreen. We all do different things throughout the day in regards to our skin, so the amount of sunscreen removed from the skin will differ from person-to-person and day-to-day. That’s why it’s difficult to have a single rule that will apply to everyone. Conclusions from studies vary in their recommendations for when and how often to reapply. What you choose to do is up to you, but you should take into account how much UV you’re exposed to, how much you expect to be exposed to, and your activities. You should think about reapplying your sunscreen before going for a jog outdoors. Work in an office? Maybe reapply before you leave the office. What’s clear though is that you should definitely reapply after sweating, swimming, bathing, and abrasion (like laying on sand) - even if you are using a water-resistant sunscreen. In the UK many sunscreens are marketed as ‘once-a-day’, but health organisations recommend disregarding that and still reapplying throughout the day.

and of course there are some solutions for reapplying sunscreen like sprays (mists), formulated especially for reapplying over makeup. You wonțt have as much control as with a cream/lotion, but it is better than nothing

I watched Dr Dray videos (she is a dermatologist, who talks a lot about sunscreens) and she mentioned it a lot of times that blue light causes discoloration and things like this but they don't necessarily cause "aging" skin - wrinkles come mostly from UV ray damage.

I recently purchased EltaMD broad spectrum clear SPF46, after seeing Dr.Sam talking about it lots, then seeing another dermatologist using it. It’s probably the most I have paid for a sunscreen dedicated to my face, but realistically is the most important part of my routine, especially being extremely fair skinned. I am in love with it. I’d never found one that worked well under make-up and felt nice and non-greasy. This works perfectly under make-up so long as you allow it to absorb before applying, I use a beauty blender to gently press/dab in my foundation. My make-up stays put all day, and my skin looks lovely. It works as a primer better than any primer I tried lol.

Gemma Furbank Another Elta MD user here. It’s definitely the best for me.. although I prefer the ‘Elta MD Daily’ to the ‘clear’. I wish I could use the ‘Clear’, but something in it irritates my very sensitive skin for up to an hour after application, I think it’s probably the niacinamide. Wish I could use it though.. but the ‘Daily’ is the same just without the niacinamide... love it!

It feels lovely and leaves no residue, which makes me want to wear it daily. :)

Has any tried both Murad and Elta MD ? Would love to hear from them. Lastly i have noticed amazon price for Elta Md is around £50 however there are other websites selling at £23. Please advice. Many thanks in advance.

I always say that about reaplying but people somehow find a way to make it seem stupid. They expect you to either be a hundred percent vegan or a hundred percent wastefree so the smallest 'mistake' seems like the greatest fault ever. For me personally, it's enough that I'm doing something at all, whereas SOOOO many people don't even use sunscreen on a regular basis. So it was reassuring to hear an actual dermatologist agree with me. Thank you!

Same approach here. I don't reapply unless I go out for lunch in the summer or late spring. Obviously things change if I do outdoor activities, or go to the beach or pool, or if I do long walks. But I will never renounce all these stress-fighting activities. The beneficial effects of those activities well outdoes the risk of absorbing some UVA. I view things holistically.

This is wonderful information because you’ve taken an educated but also wonderfully realistic approach. Thanks so much! I have a question for part 2 if that’s OK... Many people recommend wearing full sunscreen even if they’re indoors all day. If I know I’m going to be indoors all day and if , as a matter of course, I never sit in direct sunlight streaming though a window, is this really necessary? I really enjoy having the occasional “day off” from putting lots of gloop on my face and have tended to take those days off when I know I won’t be going out at all. Like you I live in the UK..

Great video Dr Sam!When applying synthetic sunscreens instructions say we must wait 15-30 minutes before sun exposure because the sunscreen needs to “set”. Does that mean we must avoid daylight (such as light that comes through windows) while we wait? I’ve heard some experts say that the waiting is so that sunscreen doesn’t rub off or run off due to perspiration and not because sunscreens will break down in presence of light while they set. Thanks!

Is it necessary to reapply a mineral sunscreen, if you have a sun-evading behaviour like yourself, and in that case would you still have the same amount of protection at the end of the day as you had when you first applied it? And is it only direct sunlight that break down the sunscreen-efficacy and not the uva lights passing through windows and such?

Sunlight absorbs and breaks down chemical SPF. Mineral SPF just reflects the sunlight. The film breaks down over the day so should he reapplied

Thanks Dr. Sam I find it a bit pointless and a hassle to reapply sun screen in a windowless office. Ill probably do what you do and only reapply in the summer When I go for walks. It is a pain to reapply make up. Tinted sun screen does help

Anyone with melisma, who’s acne prone and oily I’ve found the perfect product that is oil free and acts like a bb cream, is spf 30 and uses zinc and titanium dioxide. It’s Bare Minerals Complexion rescue, comes in a whole bunch of shades too! It’s now my foundation! I can reapply it throughout the day and I also pop a bit of the mineral powder on the oily spots around the nose and chin so I don’t get shiny. It’s the best solution for my situation. I do not want to be relying on one application in the morning especially as I live in a tropical climate and need to reapply. Hope that’s helped someone.

I have had this doubt about UVA rays for the longest time... do you actually get UVA rays/damage when in the shade? Or more specifically, not under direct sunlight indoors (meaning with the protection of a glass window)?? Lets say, in a naturally sunlit room but where the lighting is ambient, not direct rays. I am so curious about this, it would be really helpful if you could answer. Thank you for your videos Dr.Sam, I learn a lot! Greetings from Spain ♡

I don’t have Rosacea so I’m not able to tell you if this would suit your skin, but it does specifically state that the product is for acne prone, sensitive skin and rosacea. EltaMD Broad Spectrum Clear SPF46. I started using it recently after seeing Dr.Sam (who also has rosacea) and D.Dray using it (who has sensitive skin). I love it so much. Hope you find something that works for you.

Rudolf Pienaar I have exactly the same condition and am really sensitive. Even Altruist, which so many people love, burns my face. It’s agony. La Roche Posay Confort spf 30 chemical sunscreen is OK for me.. as is Hada Labo spf 50 Pa ++++.. I have to order it direct from Japan through amazon, but it’s worth it. I get several tunes at a time and it’s not expensive. Elta MD clear is a hybrid sunscreen (chemical and physical) it hurts my skin, I think it’s the niacinamide. But Elta MD’s other version called ‘daily’ is my favourite sunscreen of all. It took me two years of trying, hurting and discarding for me to settle on these trusted faves.... if my ultra sensitive, reactive rosacea skin can cope with these, I bet yours could too... good luck.

Hanne Overgaard I found only two hand creams with spf in the USA. One is from Supergoop spf40, and the other is AVON Renew spf15. I apply a generous layer of Supergoop before leaving the house, and reapply Avon all day, which is a very elegant, effective and cheap handcream with spf. Since I reapply every time I wash my hands, I find spf 15 to be reasonable. In the end, I use those two because I haven't found any other.

If you are in the USA or Canada I HIGHLY recommend Bananaboat Sport performance ultralightweight susncreen lotion. While it's not specifically marketed for use on hands, I find that it works excellent as a hand lotion with sunscreen since it dries quickly to a remarkably smooth non sticky/non tacky finish that is perfect for hands. It comes in a large bottle (240 ml) for a bout $10 which is a great price considering you'll be using it often since we tend to wash hand a lot and therefore need to reapply often. It's fragrance free too.

Every deramtologist I've seen online or spoken to, seems to agree that powder sunscreens don't offer enough protection no matter how high the SPF no. is because of their "dry" nature which means they don't have the "staying power" on skin compared sunscreens in fluid form which tend to hold up better. I believe if I'm not mistaken I've heard Dr Sam say the same a while back.

And if im going somewhere after work (i work at a hospital so no popping out for lunch unfortunately) i apply another layer of My cc cream with Spf in it.. probably not the right amount, but i see it as topping up My Spf layer.. Also i i’ve read that zinc oxide doesnt degrade as much as chemical filter does? We all do our best! Love always //Daniel

Actually the new chemical filters offer better UVA protection and are very photo-stable. I am talking about Tinosorb S, Uvinul A+, Tinosorb A2B, Uvasorb HEB, Uvinul T-150; they are also cosmetically elegant, especially in comparison to zinc oxide. Tinosorb M is also a great filter but it has a white cast.

I know you said there was no research regarding how much protection you're getting from your initial layer of SPF when you're out & about at lunch time or beyond, but do you think it's still significant if it is a mineral sunscreen? From my understanding, chemical filters lose efficacy with UV exposure, so wouldn't a mineral sunscreen that is clearly still on your face at the end of the day (as evidenced by the makeup applied on top of them being intact) be MUCH better as your sole layer of SPF? Also, I understand it is an imperfect method of reapplication at best, but how do you feel about the use of SPF powders (such as those by colorescience) for topping up, particularly over melasma problem areas if you're going outside in the afternoon (always with a hat)? Thanks Dr. Sam!

I wonder why, even dermatologists keep talking about SPF index when it has nothing to do with UVA protection? Since most of us are mainly concerned about skin aging, we should only focus on PPD index which is rarely known. When you live in a city, using a SPF50 sunscreen every day is useless if you don't know its PPD.
@marcovincitori4643

I completely agree with you and can't understand why we are not using PPD data on sunscreen; however, as this is not available and I live in Europe, I know that my sunscren should have a PPD of at least 1/3 of the SPF on the label.

I've had such a hard time finding sunscreen. I'm very fair (I come from a family of Scottish redheads, my mum's already had some skin cancer removed, my grandmother also had it), my skin is sensitive to everything, so I use Aveeno baby spf, and CeraVe moisturiser. So far, those are great. I don't care about a white cast as I don't wear makeup and.. I'm pasty anyway. However! I'm a farmer. My work is outside and if I have too many layers on, even thin ones, it not only inhibits my work, but I can overheat very quickly. I find two hours is too long to wait to reapply, to be honest and that's a lot of money on sunscreen - for myself, my two kids, my husband when I can sneak attack him with it. I once got a sunburn in November. November!

You mention that the UVA symbol with the circle around indicates 'good' UVA protection of a sunscreen. Does this equate to the 4 star 'good' UVA rating as introduced by Boots Pharmarcy? Not many brands seem to be using this system (or the Asian +++ rating) which is frustrating. Even if a product claims broad spectrum protection or has the circle around the UVA, this might only equate to 1 or 2 stars, the actual level of UVA protection is not clear on most products. Really would appreciate if you could help clarify!
