Arsenal fan here. Özil used to play with Giroud, Walcott, Chamberlain, Monreal, Cocquelin etc...all starters. And we still used to finish top 4. And we've seen him play when he's surrounded by top level players. He's regarded as one of the best players ever in his position. He used to be in a conversation as the best midfielder in the world alongside Xavi and Iniesta. Ødegaard doesn't even lace his boots. Ødegaard needs to lead us to multiple PL titles and at least a UCL before we even start that conversation. Özil saved us from the muds in 2014 when he came to us. He's still our biggest signing to this date. Drop Özil into this team, we'd have probably won the league by now. Drop Ødegaard into that sorry ass team from 2014-2019 and we'd probably don't even make it into top 4

anybody who says ozil is a nostalgia merchant. we had to play ramsey and cazorla out of position (or sometimes 3 players) to accommodate ozil and we were still not good enough. one of the few reasons Wenger had to go as much as we loved him. Odegaard anytime of the day.

You have to remember peak Ozil was at Real Madrid. He was good at Arsenal for 2-3 years, but he fell off HARD after that. The main difference between the two is mentality and responsibility. Odegaard has a better football brain on both sides of the ball than Ozil. Ozil final third passing and movement was elite but… Odegaard tactically presses, drops into DM to advance the team up the pitch. And of course Odegaards work rate is just way higher. Ozil was found wanting jogging around the pitch and became a luxury player at times. Odegaard is a xavi archetype for us, so nothing he does looks that impressive; simple passing and dropping his shoulder but he tactically dictating the games for us. It’s no coincidence we are playing free flowing football again and having a clean sheet in I can’t remember how long.

Exactly. I won’t lie, I hate talking about our players like this, because people call us deluded or whatever. But if you actually watch odegaard, I haven’t seen a player like him. He’s one of the best football brains itw, he technically never loses the ball, dictates the play through captaincy and positioning, simple link up. And on top of that, he can play some absolutely ridiculous balls. I could not believe how well we were playing against Forrest. Ode is really that special for me man.

Couldn’t have analyze and said it better. Ozil thrived so much at RM because they are such a dominant team and what he was criticized for at Arsenal wasn’t exposed as much since they always have the ball. I’ll have Odegaard all day over Ozil and that is not speaking on hindsight. If you look at the work rate of Odegaard, you know what I’m talking about. When the chips are down and we are struggling in the game, Odegaard will still try to find ways to get us back into the game. His technical ability for me isn’t inferior to Ozil, he’s a master of feint and delaying passes, beautiful player to watch. As Wenger once said, If you love football, you love Rosicky. It can be applied to Odegaard for me

Ozil and Odegaard feel like two very different midfielders. Ozil was a proper 10. He stayed up field, he had higher chance creation, didn't help the defence out. Odegaard plays amazing in the 8 position. I think he's found his best place on the field. He can support the defence, isn't afraid to try to win the ball back, higher work rate, creates plenty of chances but needs more help from his wingers and build up play. I think in essense, you have to realise Ozil would never be able to be as good as Odegaard in his position, and Odegaard would never be able to be as good as Ozil in his position. Sports Science says that heavy running on the joints and physical development of young player should be controlled. 2 years will 9:21 make a massive difference on his physical development. Saka after 2 years grew visibly stronger, as did Martinelli. You need to periodize his development into micro and macro cycles. I don't want Ethan to end up like Jack Wilshere.

Odegaard EVERY SINGLE DAY and i will explain why, i think overall Odegaard is the better player he works harder, he tracks back, he defends from the front, hes a leader, his passing and assits are very similar to ozil, and to top it off his natural skill isn't far off ozil either, i would say ozil was technically more talented but i wouldn't say its a gulf in class. Overall Odegaard is a better all round football player but you could argue ozil's technical skill was higher.

Time will tell. Barcelona often have overhyped young players who make an initial impact, but as time goes on, oppositions work them out. I don't think that will happen with Lamar, but you never know. Plus of course he's playing in a league that isn't as competitive as the PL and that helps.
