​@gerardmoloney433 Do you also have problems with the words "traditions", "religious", and "condemn" as the previous commenter does and accusing Pope Francis and the Catholic Church? Wrong understanding and misinterpretation of the Bible! You are both putting words in the mouth of Jesus that he never said. Calling the Scribes and Pharisees "fools" and "vipers" and even worse, is not the same as "condemning" them. He was simply pointing out their own hypocrisy and self-righteousness several times. They actually didn't preach to the people the traditions Jesus meant, but they abused of these traditions to not do themselves what their own Law really meant they should do. Otherwise Jesus would have not told the crowds to observe everything they taught, except for what they practiced! But Jesus "never" condemned anyone, or he would have contradicted himself when he said "I have not come to condemn the world, but to save the world!" Ironically enough, it was the same People of God, the chosen Israelites, who actually condemned Jesus to death, not the other way around. On the way to Emmaus, instead, it was two of his earlier followers whom Jesus had to explain the Scriptures from Moses to the prophets for why the Messiah had to die. And they finally recognized him as the risen Jesus (when their eyes were opened), and that only later, after "he broke bread". You see you misunderstand too what you tell other people to read for themselves?

@gerardmoloney433 One reason why I don't buy the idea that there's only been something up with the popes since Vatican II (or whenever you might believe it started). Far earlier than that, they were purposely monopolizing access to Scripture and punishing those who would read it for themselves. If it weren't so sad, it would be laughable that the idea of the Universal Church is interpreted by some as being the organization that evolved out of the local Roman church which now, outside of which, there is supposedly no salvation. The same Apostles who encouraged testing by Scripture would hardly see this as an Apostolic church.

I had read or heard of various episodes described in the book from different sources, but I never fully understood how they all fit together until I read this book. IMHO this may mean that Bergoglio is feeling the heat that he cannot do enough to please the SGM. In his newly released biography he was perhaps forced to say that the office is for life. However, he himself has said some time ago that he could see himself needing to resign. At the start of his papacy Francis said he would like to see the resignation of a pope becoming normal, and in 2015 he said he had a feeling that his pontificate would be brief, describing Benedict’s decision to step down as “courageous”.
