Definitely over at the time. And he tried to transition the character across to WWE but they put him in a snake pit. The dude was making crazy money that was not sustainable and living the dream and he could’ve built himself back up under WWE but was treated incorrectly.

He was behind the scenes OVER. I always said Buff made easy money... He rarely wrestled singles and those matches never were part of a storyline... They were 10 minute fill-ins with no high points or serious Mic work. Those Wrestlers who switched to WCW in the mid-90's GOT PAID! Their dates were cut in half, their travel was cut 80%+, their work on the card was cut massively, and their checks increased 3x. Guaranteed contracts etc. Ted was trying to flood WWF out of talent... He just underestimated the psychotic approach by Vince. He weathered the storm.

Please stay sober man! You clearly have big heart. One thing that stopped me from ever accepting a single painkiller is being a wrestling fan and knowing the potential consequences. I have learned about 30 different names of drugs from watching wrestling. I was offered Percocets for a tooth infection once: NO. I was offered OxyContin after a surgery once: NO. But either way we are behind you Buff!

Facts. I was clean for 9 years and had kidney stone surgery two years ago. I was in so much pain post op I took two Percocet 10’s. In my hey-day I was taking easily 5-6 at a time two to three times a day if they were available. It didn’t faze me in that era. Flash forward to this post surgery situation I sincerely thought I had pushed things too far. I had already taken one earlier (maybe 2 hours prior) and a Tordol. I went pale sweaty then cold. I really thought that was it for me. The tolerance I accumulated over about 9-10 years would kill a regular person. It would kill me if I did half of it.

Nearly 10 years sober myself and it was after living a very similar lifestyle. I worked independent shows on weekends (not as a wrestler) when I was in high school. After graduation I went from never smoking a cigarette (still haven’t) having a drink or even being with a woman 😂 to being a full fledged addict. The day I started taking the Lortab (they’re called Norco now) and somas before 5pm is the day I knew I was heading into dark territory. In those days you could get 120 Lortab 10’s in the mail and 120 somas via online pharmacies. I was ripping and running hard then reality set in. I was a junkie. I functioned 9-5 but not without the pills. Those pain pills made me feel like I was unstoppable then at night I’d load up on somas nearly choking on my food. It was dark and horrible but it went from wanting to party like the wrestlers to being hopelessly hooked. Just horrid. Almost died twice. Still no beer or alcohol but pilled up. It was horrible but praise God he delivered me from it and with MAT medication I got through the withdrawals. Meetings, PRAYER, and determination. You have to be determined.

20 pills sounds like a lot to most, but if you do 1 per hour that is 24. I was in to loritabs, but I used soma at times too. We used to do soma slurpees. Crush like 10 of them and put them in kool Aid and sip on them all day. I can still taste it and its been 20 years. Soma are wierd, 1 day you could take a couple and be lit up, stuck in your chair, the next day you would have to double it because the half life was 72 hours before they were out of your system. Your heart is a muscle, SOMA is a muscle relaxer, so you could die easily. Before car-fentanyl, SOMA and Xanax being mixed with opioids is what were killing people I knew. I do not know anyone who died from Perc, Loritab and Oxycontin by themselves.

Somas, all I miss them. They don't write them anymore. It was called Houston cocktail. I used to get 120 lorcet or loratab, 120 somas, and 120 Xanax bars. And I knew people who would hit several doctors. I wasn't into Xanax at that time so that paid for everything. But pills were everywhere in people's parent cabinet.... And a cheap easy high .50 to $1 for somas. 1.50 to $2 for pain pills. And $2 - $2.5 for the bars. At that price all my friend got addicted 😢 I just got clean 45 days again after falling off.

I am happy for Bagwell’s journey to sobriety working for him. But I do believe the substance abuse choices in pro wrestling are mostly limited to Buff’s generation and mostly do to their individual choices and not so much an indictment of the business. I know more regular folks who chose drugs and booze and they will try to blame everyone and everything else.
