@@AndrewRooneyDrumsThis all happened because Jimmy is a self-taught drummer, and you realize it when he holds the drumsticks and the way he hits them is quite different from the usual drummers. He played the drums since he was a toddler and had his own drummer at the age of 12 , and when he was a teenager he joined a percussion group. from high school to university, where he and his group played music from used bottles, used buckets, used drums, etc., and that's where the unique drum beats he created when recording or while performing.

I remember hearing that double ride pattern when this album dropped and nearly exploded. Glad you're getting into these metal/rock icons Also, That's a Zildjian Mega Bell Ride, he used those on the recordings in this session. One interesting fact about The Rev that not many people know, is that the entirety of the drum tracks from A7X's first album; "Sounding the Seventh Trumpet" was all one take. I mean that as in each song was a single take, but he did that for bragging rights, so as the album goes on you can hear how it slowly gets sloppier and sloppier. Either way, The Rev is the whole reason I picked up the drums and I've been playing like him and inspired by him for years. I miss him so much. foREVer

Andrew, so glad you got to the Rev and avenged sevenfold. There's a lot of talent in this band and they are one of my favorites. This man alone got me to pick up drumming. But there’s been no shortage of influences from many others. But I love jimmy and always will because of how he changed my life. Also probably the way he holds the drum sticks that way is because of how tall he was, 6’4

Andrew, this along with other avenged sevenfold recordings were often done in one take or that's what the folklore says. There isn't too much quality recordings of playthroughs that I've seen over the years with the rev, but in terms of avenged sevenfold, us deathbats go by albums rather than individual songs. So in my humble opinion, I would have to say their self titled or city of evil are their best works. Thanks for getting to my inspiration for music!

If I remember correctly, he called that lick the “double octopus” where he plays double bass and cymbals in sync. I also believe that was the one and only take he did in studio. He was a great drummer and the reason I started drumming when I was young. Would be awesome to see some more avenged sevenfold even with Portnoy or Brooks Wackermen. There’s no replacement for the Rev but they have added to the legacy!

This is not the take from the album. He missed the fill at the end of the first verse, but he kept playing because that's how he rolled. Jimmy was a rare one-take master. He never punched in a recording. If he messed up, he would do the whole song again. Interestingly, their first album was recorded in sequence in a single take. EVERY SONG SEQUENTIALLY BACK TO BACK. Jimmy wanted it to feel like a live show where there are no redos.

If no one’s said yet and ya didn’t know, Rev’s idol was Mike Portnoy and those quick double ride cymbal parts he took inspiration from Mike on that for this song. Also, these boys were given free range on this album and were all in their like mid 20’s and what we got was a masterpiece of an album. You should really check out the song A Little Piece of Heaven. The brain child of the Rev himself and he was inebriated a lot of the time while recording it 😅

I could be wrong, but I dont think this is the actual take used on the album recording. He pauses at 3:42 and kinda smirks after.
