The fill at 5:41 is the one that gets me - its probably one of the simplest fills that I've ever heard him play, but combined with the chord progression, which is so familiar from so many songs, it builds up a huge amount of anticipation for the downbeat - maybe even moreso because of the contrast to his astounding and intricate playing elsewhere. To me, Its a moment where he seems to offer a nod to aspiring drummers everywhere, saying "look - the right fill, even a simple one, played perfectly, at the right time can add so much drama to the music". He's just an amazing musician.

Orchestration and musicality is everything..Gavin is very melodic and sonically beautiful to listen to and watch .one of my fav drummers on the planet ...Simon Phillips also falls into that same lane ...I have to note that...

Hey Andrew, I'm glad you enjoyed it! I thought you would, and yes, I think it's the really melodic orchestration on this piece that keeps me coming back and listening again and again. It was a real treat to be in the audience at the show to see & hear Gavin play it live. I'll second your recommendation: if Gavin is in town, GO!

I discovered Gavin on KZbin. I saw him fist on David Letterman's Drum Solo Week. I thought holy crap, who is this guy? This was the next video I watched. He's been my favorite drummer ever since. His playing is tasteful, intricate, and relentless. He reminds me of John Bonham. They both have/had a way of making complicated drumming sound simple. Their playing always fits seamlessly into whatever song they are accompanying. Making complicated drumming fit the song and sound easy... is that Head Room? I think I used that correctly. I'm not a drummer, just a fan of great drumming. Gavin has redefined what great sounds like to me.

The all known tasty drumming genius G.Harrison!!if you listen carefully you see that he listen the song many many times so he did something musical upon the guitars transitions.This way he works!!

I'd say he is on of the most interesting drummers ESPECIALLY for people like me, that never played the drums. His play is so perfectly sticking to the melody of the songs, he creates more than rythm. There are very few drummers that I really want to replay (as a saxophone player). The beautiful melodies of steven wilson are not complete without his "drum melodies".

If I were to use one word to describe Mr Harrison's playing...'elegant'...His accenting,dynamic control,the buttery smooth nuances,his placement of notes....are like a long flowing beautiful ballroom gown of elegant sound.

I'm not a drummer (nor a musican of any type), but I'm absolutely mesmerized by Gavin. I find his playing so interesting, I could watch him all day long! And I can't say that about any other drummer (maybe Carl Palmer, though he's a completely different type of drummer). He's easily my personal GOAT drummer.

I've come back to this video several times over the years. The track on the record is actually just over 11 minutes long, but this cut does fine highlighting some of his more prominent sections. When you just throw your hands up and say "He's the best" ... yep, been there.

Gavin had mentioned in a Drumeo demonstration that he considered his drum parts as telling a story with the kit. His creations involve building up the verses and chapters in a story, which a song is. How he seamlessly creates the different rhythm patterns and tones really sends my mind into the cosmos because it truly is amazing the work he does. Pineapple Thief is VERY fortunate to have a creative storyteller working the kit in the background to really enhance their overall sound. Just like the animation from "Wayne's World," "we are not worthy!" 😆😆😆

I had the honor and privilege of seeing Gavin and Pineapple Thief right across the street from my apartment in Santa Cruz, Ca. From the first note I was blown away. I was maybe about 100 ft from him(it was a fairly small venue). I was spoiled. But I was extremely grateful. They played this one and it was a lot longer. There was an extended solo section where Gavin was at half time and the rest of the band was straight ahead. I looked over at my friend and went 🤯 . I saw porcupine tree a few years ago in San Francisco and it was just as amazing. Sorry for the long comment but I thought of your videos as I was watching Gavin. It was amazing. I hope at some point you can see him live. It’s totally worth it.

Anyone else notice that he runs "S" hoops or Sonars equivalent on everything. I have one on my snare top just to cut down on eating sticks so fast.
@MikeKobb27 күн бұрын
I think they are indeed S-Hoops. He mentioned it in some interview that I saw, and you can see the logo on the snare at least in some of the concert films.
@kchez558626 күн бұрын
I became aware of them from Gavin talking about them, so I tried them out & was sold on them.. Nothing I've ever tried to do to get a better tone had this much of an impact on my sound short of buying a new kit. All the benefits of die cast hoops at the cost of a regular triple flange. Ingenius product!
@APWPaint25 күн бұрын
@@kchez5586 I'm thinking about doing the same thing. You have them on toms as well?
@kchez558624 күн бұрын
@@APWPaint Yes, I have them on every drum on both of my kits except the bass drums of course. The improvement of my tom sound was huge - between the S-Hoops and using zero rings again was a game changer. Never l Iiked them (zero rings) initially-they would fall off or become bracelets but since they were now firmly in place, it led me to experimenting & learning how making your own & playing with the width can really fine tune the sound. I even figured out a way to almost completely eliminate the sympathetic snare buzz that the now beautiful toms were causing with my 5 1/2" brass Pearl Sensitone by using one on the inside of the reso. Was a lot of trial & error to find the right diameter & width for the drum and the heads but it was worth the effort! Best of luck when you get them - don't be afraid to think outside the box with all these tuning parameters to play with- might take a lot of work, but when you find YOUR sound, it feels pretty good! Rock out!
