It’s so shameful that Clive never got any of the recognition he deserved. He in my opinion is one of the best drummers ever! And at 74 today he still murders it and then some!
@leesaunders9102 Жыл бұрын
He isn't the only member that didn't get recognition. John Glasscock (bass player for Tull) died with 0 money while playing with Tull due to Ian as far as i'm aware and the drummer at the time paid for the bass players funeral due to John being paid very little with his time with Tull. John glasscock was a beast on bass and played with various decent bands of the time before joining tull.

He's #3 on my list of top rock drummers. #1 Ginger Baker. #2 Keith Moon. #4 John Bonham (sorry Led heads) Buddy Rich beats them all, but I'm not into jazz. Seen them live.

Ever since I heard his monster drumming on “Dharma For One” on the “This Was” Album I loved his style. Some would say he was a little too busy, but I think his interpretations were excellent and just made the music that more powerful. I loved all their albums up to “TAAB”,with “Benefit” being my absolute favorite. Possibly due to the fact I personally related to it’s songs in the summer of 70’ and stirs my emotions to this day, 54yrs later. I would really like to know however why their live version of Dharma sounds totally different from the original.

Clive is my great uncle, and I can remember the first time I met him. I had a drum set at the time but I barely knew how to play. He asked if he could show me some tricks and he did a little drum solo and then did exactly what he did at 3:15 in the video on my drum set… gave me goosebumps and I still remember it perfectly!

He's still playing now, and he's still a bit of a beast, but what's really nice is the humour he brings to the show as well.

What makes a great drum solo is when a drummer can take a bunch of awesome ideas and make the solo musical! He nailed it! Thanks for sharing Garey.

Yes, Clive was the original drummer and a great influence on me. He once told me he cut down the length of his sticks which apparently gave him more speed and if you look carefully you can see he has very short sticks with no tips!!! I think he eventually reverted to normal sticks. Great drummer and I agree that his passion stands out....

I was lucky enough to see him play live many times with a band called Poor Mouth who’s lead guitarist was Jackie McCauley who played keyboards with Van Morrison’s Them. I played in a band that supported Poor Mouth in the Mean Fiddler in London. Clive shared a home grown spliff with me backstage before the gig. An incredibly nice, down to earth man. I saw him play with Steve Simpson years later and spoke with him after the gig and he hadn’t changed at all. So friendly and approachable. What a drummer!

He is one of the most overlooked drummers ,Dharma for one? On Jethro Tull's debut album ,the studio version, is some of the most sick drumming I ever heard, Clive if you read this you're awesome and Im inspired by your playing?

Clive was the original drummer for Jethro Tull from "This Was" ( where Dharma For One was hatched ... as a completely different song ), "Stand Up", "Benefit" and "Aqualung". After the release of Aqualung Clive quit the band. I found Jethro Tull one night on the radio about this time when I heard Aqualung on FM radio as a 14 year old teen-ager and was crazy about the power and raw violence in the music, and yet its humanity and refinement ... a brilliant juxtaposition of ideas and themes all in one song. It was the first or one of the first record albums I ever bought, to be played on my newly bought Radio Shack, Modular, bookshelf stereo system. While I was at the record store, behind the new Aqualung albums were all these other strange looking albums by Jethro Tull that I eventually ended up buying and loving. At that time Jethro Tull was putting out an album a year, or a little bit more .. a very amazing time in music. The first album "This Was" had a wonderful version of Dharma For One, and then in 1972 "Thick As A Brick" came out and the retrospective "Living In The Past" came out with an amazing whole live side of one album where a live version was singled out and added. It sounded much like this version, but better. It took me a while to get used to such free form improvised music and it chaotic order, but that is my favorite now. Later Clive joined the group Aviator with a couple of really great songs, ( "Your Lovin Is My Home and Cleveland Ohio were a few ) but a band that never hit the bigtime.

Clive Bunker was on their first album and I heard he was primarily self taught. I love natural drummers and not drummers that are too perfect. I would rather hear a raw drummer than a classically trained drummer in certain situations. Maybe it's because I was self taught for the first 12 or 13 years. I love Clive's drumming. I noticed the sticks clicking on the rim when he does fast fills but it's part of his charm. He even does it on the records.

You cant split all these guys. they all have their own style. As a drummer I would just want to aspire to any one of them. Never will.

Still my favorite Tull drummer. Perhaps not as technically accomplished as some of the later guys, Barlow, Craney or Perry. He just had this funky quirkiness that I really enjoy.

Clive is an incredible force of nature ... Check out his playing with Steve Hillage on the 1977 German TV / Rockpalast performance ... He also played with former Scorpions guitarist Uli Jon Roth in Electric Sun ... I saw him play a solo show with Uli which was largely neo classical rock . At the same show ( a multi line up event ) Clive , Uli and Jack Bruce performed a set of Cream numbers .... Fantastic . He's definitely one of the greats .

What he plays to the songs is unbelieveble to me..huge dynamics and accents, unpredictable and then there is live show..what an locomotive, he is always waving his hands hard, even when playing quiet. And his bodt posture looks so uncomfortable, like he became one with the kit. Holy hell

There's a more recent video of him doing a solo with Blodwyn Pig. Although he had no hair by then (like me), he was possibly even more fierce than here with Tull!

Look at the 1979 video of Barriemore Barlow and do a review please. I consider him to have been Tull’s best as I think there are no two songs with the same drum beats Also check the drumming on Flying Dutchman from the Stormwatch album Barrie was with Tull from 1972 - 1979 So enjoy the music beginning with Thick as a Brick and each album in succession and ending with Stormwatch

Neil Pert and Keith Moon and Buddy Rich and all those greats aside, my favorite drummers have always been Mitch Mitchell, Clive Davis and Mick Fleetwood. Mick because he just keeps it basic and it's all about the song. Mitch and Clive for their jazz influence and individuality.

Clive is best appreciated for his Work with Ian Anderson..Drum solo's, IMHOAD ( in my humble opinion as a drummer...:) ), are a poor way to judge a drummer...E.g. Bruford's solo on Perpetual Change; Good stuff; but hardly an encapsulation of the man's body of work... Personally, except for some of Buddy's and other top level jazz drummers, drum solos are kind of boring...Just sayin...
