Agreed...one of my top 10 favorites. I'm really digging his work with King Crimson right now too.
@andreasbreitwieser14494 жыл бұрын
For me, his genius shows up by making quite comprehensive fill-ins, totally logical and reproducible, but in relation to a very difficult point of the meter he is moving in, in a displaced or polyrhythmic relation and this makes it so hard to understand sometimes.....in difference to Vinnie or this crazy fast gospel guys, where the fill-ins are in priori in a weird grouping, deadly fast or with a crazy orchestration.......

Absolute Agreed!!!

@WhoDarestheMAN gamer I like Thomas Lang too, but how did Thomas Lang get brought into the discussion? You are creating a contest out something that has no real victor. Of course Thomas Lang is a beast, nobody has disputed that. He also might have better technical chops, but Gavin Harrison has a distinctive nuance, touch and style that can only be played by Gavin Harrison...Just like every other great drummer. There's much more than technical skill alone that goes into what makes people gravitate towards liking any one drummer over another, which of course is the art of it. Nothing that was discussed above takes anything away from Thomas Lang's skill, but you have to admit that Gavin Harrison is also a great player with a totally different style than Thomas Lang. They are both amazing drummers for different reasons. As an example, I do not believe that Thomas Lang would be as great of a fit for King Crimson. Gavin Harrison was made for that role. However, in my opinion, Thomas Lang is a much better clinician drummer...simply amazing in that role. Drumming is an art form first, so we have to learn to appreciate all of the different aspects that each drummer brings to the table so that we can learn from them and improve our own drumming.

Along with the click I would imagine Gavin and the band also have various verbal counts to bring them in and out of the solo sections. One of my favourite performances by a brilliant drummer.

Gavin is definitely one of the best, and is "Mr. Metronome". But he IS playing along to a click for this performance. If you notice, Paul Shaffer is also listening intently to the click, and is using vocal cues (on the click) to help him count the band in on the little instrumental fills. I attended one of Gavin's clinics, and he told us that Porcupine Tree uses clicks with cues all the time.
