My son just had his first live performance with his middle school band. He played glockenspiel and snare (not full snare just drum pad). How long until he starts playing an actual full sized snare drum? Is there a typical grade that he would start or does it depend on the school program? Also, should I get him a full sized snare to start practicing on at home or am I jumping the gun?

@@Brimst0ne_XB For most schools, kids start marching a full sized snare drum in the drumline, which is introduced in high school (9-12th grade) with the marching band. Our school was lucky enough to have a middle school indoor drumline program that fed into our high school, so we had experience at a younger age. Maybe try to contact the high school band director about the drumline and see what programs are offered. If you’re son is really interested in marching snare in a drumline, a snare drum could be an awesome gift. I also think a good quality snare pad is also a great way to start practicing.

I read the OSU band brought in extra drummers to give the show a heavy drum presence to properly give the music that Neil Peart presence. Edit. "I really hate Ohio State, but I am starting to love you right now." As Rush fan and Michigan State Alum, I understand that feeling.

Steve, thanks so much for your comments on the drum parts. I agree completely, the parts capture the arrangement but given the opportunity elevates the experience like DCI. When I was in the OSUMB band (ancient history), we were given the simplest, old school drum parts. The drum instructor, Charlie Spohn, knew he had some talent in the line, though, so he gave us a very few fundamental guidelines to use to capture and drive the music arrangement, and we wrote our own part on the go at the Monday-Tuesday rehearsals. Much simpler than these you hear in this performance, but effective in their own way. By the way, the best example, perhaps, of the one week rehearsal challenge/success was the 'Video Games' show in 2012 which brought in a new era for TBDBITL of heightened challenging music arrangements and marching 'choreography' to capture the arrangement.

I go to osu and play in the athletic band and am going to try out again for the marching band this summer. the drumline has really good drummers in there. the talent they bring in is amazing. They have 12 snares on the field with 2 alternates, 5 tenors with 1 alternate, 5 basses with 1 alternate, and 5 cymbals with 1 alternate. There are dozens of videos like go pro videos and recordings of their performances that showcase the drumline. i would say anything post 2017 is the best things to watch. They used to be really military styled and now the drumline is pretty much exclusively drum corps style except their pregame show where they wear slings. 2014-2016 was the transitional period and 16 was the first year they used kevlar heads on their drums.

they also had 2 weeks to learn this. they have a new show every home game. they also have practice every week day for 2 hours. The percussion writer was their percussion instructor and writer mark reynolds. and the drill was designed by their band director dr Christopher hoch. Not sure who wrote the brass parts but yeah.

Hello sir. Great video. 👍. I really like how you broke this video down and how you described your opinions thru out this awesome performance. I mean no disrespect by disagreeing with you and by saying anything negative. I have my opinions, like you do. Lol. Im commenting as the video plays so i can respond to your comments. I would say the R is not a mistake. Look at the H, as you just mentioned. Lol. HAA HAA. I think they meant to do that with the R and the H. Look at the U, and S. Its supposed to be a little off, maybe like me. Most of us drummers are a little off, lmao. We are a unique bunch of crazies. I agree with you about the drumline being a very tight drumline. I agree with you that the snares should be playing that common 2 and 4 beat rhythm w the rolls, that you just described. I think the whole band does a FANTASTIC JOB in this video. you are funny, bro. This was a great video and i have enjoyed your comments, and how you describe many things going on in this performance. I am a drummer of 46 yrs. Along with my own style and technique, i am a long lived RUSH FAN. i have played and studied RUSH for a very long long time. Thanks for explaining that the picture was of neil, in the Red Barchetta song. I saw a pic of a person. I could not tell that there was a bass drum and cymbal stands/ cymbals. Thanks man. They should have made the car picture for that song. They may have done that on the new years, peach bowl, i need to look again. I agree with you about the writer of this show, from the music arrangements to the drill writers and teachers. They did an AWESOME JOB . The band director, The section teachers and band members all did a WONDERFUL job. I disagree with you when you said about getting high school drummers to play very good dble strokes , but i know what you meant. Lol. I taught high school drumlines for 10 yrs before my other career and other life things got in the way, lol. I had many snare lines play super clean, tight, and very well 👌 dble strokes. Many of my drum lines played super great and were very tight. I wrote some awesome cadences, and i used a ton of cool bass lines from Geddys playing, for my bass drums. I loved writing cool drum parts from catchy dance songs and i used alot of ideas from YES, and other prog bands, and i wrote an awesome drum solo that used an IRON MAIDEN song when the front line played on each others drums, along w stick work. I hate when a drumline has 3 and more bass drums and they ALL play the same boring parts at the same time. Cmon. Im not saying this band does that. Lol. I love tonal bass drum parts, as im sure you do to bud. Lol. I want to make a seperate comment on the video from their recent peach bowl performance. But, i will say a little about it now. I think the drum instructor(s) are phenomenal. They know their music, and their drums. They know how to tune very well. In that recent bowl show, i could not hear the bass drums, Quads and cymbals as clear as i wanted and hoped to. The snare line is powerful and might be to loud for the other drummers, imo. It cant be the camera persons fault, coz they were in a perfect position, in the middle, and if they couldnt be heard from the middle, halfway up the stands, then what could be the issue. Maybe the camera should be up higher and at the top of the stadium seats or on the roof of the announcers booth. Maybe thats where they were. Lol. I had my cell and computer turned up all the way. I will watch it on my Big, Big screen TV, and hope its better. I could hear them much better in this video. The band is just so huge and powerful, coz i hear each instrument, but the drums get drowned out. Except for the snares in that video, which is crazy. The snares are very powerful too, and could drown out the rest of the line. Which is nuts. I wanted to hear certain cymbal crashes and other drum parts and i couldnt, so im not sure if the parts that i wanted to hear, were even written. I dont know if the drumline has instructors for the snares, quads, bass drums, cymbals and the mallets, or just 1 or 2 instructors for the whole line. There are alot of drum parts that i didnt like, and i thought certain parts should have been written instead of others, but oh well. It was still very good and it fit. I hope this makes sense and i would love to see other videos from you. I like your style my friend. I hope you can respectfully reply man. I would love to hear what you think of what i have lovingly said.lol. I speak from a loving heart and would never disrespect someones opinions, thoughts and feelings, like many hot heads might do. Happy new year 🎉. Peace and love, Glen

Since you LOVE my Alma Mater "THE!!!!" SOOOOO MUCH. There is a couple of guys over the past few years who have shot some POV GOPRO videos The first 3 is a drummer and maybe a squad leader. Number 4, is the other guy, also snare, it's the POV of the RUSH show and I'll link Sesame Street, stand and POV also. Your chance to see the RUSH show up close. I'll link them down below for you. Also, the percussion score for the RUSH is by Mark Reynolds. 1. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to march in the band because out of the 5 instruments I play, they were all woodwinds and as you know, The Best Damn Band In The Land is a Drum and Bugle Corp. BUT, I love these, takes me back.... 2. Pregame (Point of View) kzbin.info/www/bejne/p4HFm32Xm7eIfM0 (pregame entrance) 3.
