A lot of people don't know this but Larry Lalonde before Primus was one of the founding members of the band Possessed, a group credited with being one of the progenitors of the death metal genre. An interesting transition of styles to say the least.

I love Primus, but I can't listen to them very often when my wife is around. She appreciates how good they are, but to her they sound like a musical manifestation of an anxiety attack.

My gf likes Primus, but she has that same response to funeral doom and dissonant black metal (Esoteric and Skáphe respectively if anyone wants an example for some masochistic reason). Of all the reactions to music possible it's the most profound. There's not liking something and there's having almost a mental health response. So yeah, I listen to that stuff when she's elsewhere...

What a fantastic summary of Primus. You killed it. I appreciate that a great deal. Ler is absolutely unique with the lead guitar. It's almost another vocal part. Loves whole tone scales and really weird minor progressions. Amazing choices... almost everything else sounds dull by comparison. Great work, man.

I’ve requested him before but I’ll do it again- Jay Weinberg I’m curious to see what you think about how he grips his sticks. To me it seems like he switches depending on what he’s playing. For example, French for tom fills but American mostly for everything else. I could also be looking at it wrong
@joshuascott79354 жыл бұрын
Jay isn't bad but unfortunately IMO hes not as good as Joey for slipknot
@Bmm16204 жыл бұрын
Joshua Scott Jay can play everything Joey did flawlessly. But you have to understand that the dynamics of Slipknots music changed after Joey left. No more need for blaring crazy fast drumming or fills such as those from the first two records. Jay fits the bill for the more heavy/ groove the band is going for in the past two records
@Finnsta6673 жыл бұрын
Great analysis! If I remember correctly, Jay Lane wrote some of the drum parts on the Frizzle Fry record. Jay is unique too, he likes a smaller kit and works the hi-hat a lot, super quick hands. Sausage was a project Les put together that featured the original members of Primus(before Ler and Tim). Jay Lane on drums and Todd Huth on guitar. Cheers!

I don't like everything Primus does (they have a way of putting me into a very weird head space), but there is no denying that these 3 musicians are monster talents. Les Claypool got all his strumming, slap & tapping style from bass extraordinaire Stanley Clarke who did all that long before him in the 70's and 80's with the fusion band Return to Forever and on his solo albums. What Les does with Primus has always been my favorite, but there're other mutant bass players out there like him that he got all that stuff from. Les probably just strums a bit more since he's in a trio.

I've seen Primus with Tim more times than I can count and he's like an anti rock star. Tim is IMO the essential drummer for Primus. Brain and Jay are both great players, but neither of them could improvise with Les and Ler the way Tim did/does. The jams Primus do when Tim’s behind the kit are incredible. With the other two, the jams are a bit awkward sounding comparatively. Can’t replace the personal connection between musicians
