Happily surprised to hear Voivod on here. Very underrated band. They really mashed a lot of influences into their work. Very unique band, jazz chords, thrash, technology uses, tempo changes, punk. I have Killing Technology on vinyl and it's wild. Art was done by one of the band members. I won't guess who, I think it was Away, but I'm likely wrong. Really great band and still releasing great music.

Voivod is...different. I was listening to Angel Rat (two albums after Dimension) a few days ago and stylistically it is all over the place, but somehow always unmistakably Voivod. At times post punk, 90s alternative, metal. You don't know what's coming one track to the next, one section to the next, one bar to the next. Nothingface is a bit of a masterpiece IMO. One of my all time favorite albums.

When thrash metal was becoming stale, even in its infancy, Voivod took a left turn and created something totally unique that, to this day, has never been repeated by any other band. They remain in my top 3 greatest thrash metal bands. Or metal in general. Check out songs from "Nothingface", "Angel Rat" and "The Outer Limits". Three, back to back, landmark albums.

Omg someone is doing Voivod.. They're from Canada btw...I listened to their first 2 albums to death when I was 14-15 yrs old...Piggy the guitarist was a forerunner in weird riffs and strange sounds and influenced Head and Munky from Korn what a way to start my Sunday lol This is one of 3 songs I learned to play and it's so much fun...Cool music fact: Jason Newsted from Metallica joined this band for 15 yrs after he left Metallica 🧐🤘✌️

Lol ya, that album is phenomenal, and those songs are great! I didnt wanna go too easy on him, but also didnt wanna dump him into the deep end, like so many people do, like starting people on Judas Priest with Painkiller for Gods sake lol just going up and punching them straight in the mouth for no reason has less effect ;) so I figured Tribal Convictions was a perfect song to pique his interest. Voivod are an amazing band, but being progressive means theyre IMPRESSIVE, but not always the easiest listen.

No way man, bad idea. Sub-effext or x-ray mirror wouldve hooked him. Those fantastic changes and weird rhythms. Dimension Hätross was and IS soooo far ahead of its time. I kid at a summer debate camp turned me on to them in 1988 or '89. Nothingface is excellent too, a little less metal-y but still amazing. Andrew I think you'll like a bunch of their records. The guitarist Piggy sadly was taken by cancer way too early.

Voivod was influenced by just about everything they've ever heard and they were great at incorporating it all into their own music at different times throughout their career. In the early 90's the next 3 big bands were going to be Soundgarden, Faith No More and Voivod, so they all went on a tour, with Voivod headlining. Voivod released an amazing album named Angel Rat, right while they were kind of falling apart. They toured the album a little, but with a session bassist. Then did a great album named The Outer Limits, which they did no touring in support of, so they kind of fizzled from being the next big thing to a band that never reached their potential commercially. Also, fun tie in to your KISS mention: After this album they signed to Gene Simmons vanity label. So going from KISS to this weirdly connects.

Viovod are an attitude as much as they are band. I first heard them after their debut War and Pain album - which, looking back was "not musically polished" to put it politely. But you can hear the seeds of greatness there, The anarko-punk overlay to the thrash sound, incorporating left-field ideas and disjointed, atonal riffs and solos were a catalyst and have teen taken further in the sounds of modern day Islandic-school black metal bands for example. There was nothing like them when they first released material and many in the metal field hated them - because they were so different and they eschewed the formats used beforehand by dearly cherished favourites. Voiod are a state of mind.

You may be interested to check out their "Angel Rat" material from 1991. Coming off "Dimension Hatross" & "Nothingface", that one took an alternative/progressive/psychedelic rock turn. It was produced by Terry Brown, who produced all RUSH albums from 1974-1981. The two albums before it are my favourites, but I have a real soft spot for the catchy & original sounding tunes on Angel Rat.

I was brought to your video by a singer reacting to Voivod, good on you to do so. You are right about the album cover and one of the reasons why they attracted me to them as well (Away does their artwork)and for taking the lyrical focus away from the occult. They were very much overlooked since they were underground and well not easily digestible. Nice to see them given kudos in this platform.

Bought the album in 88 aged 16. It took me years to get into. Challenging, yeah.Their earlier stuff is like thrash being played by aliens who have had music described to them via the medium of interpretive dance. They went more prog on subsequent albums. EDIT: This is the only approximately normal track on the album. EDIT 2: Not unpolished, but cut to tape without a click and on a limited budget.

They've been going for over 35 years at this point and if anything have aged like a fine wine, despite surviving the death of their guitarist and main songwriter Piggy in around 2005. They've done a lot of different sounds over the years! Always with sci-fi lyrics. War and Pain, Rrröööaaarrr, Killing Technology, Dimension Hatröss ('80s) - I'd say are sort of harcore punk influenced Nothingface ('89)- Their most-loved album. Lots of psychedelic and progressive influences, including a Pink Floyd Cover. Production starts getting more streamlined. Angel Rat, The Outer Limits (early 90s)- Still progressive, but kinda leaning more radio-friendly (though I don't think either got airplay). Also a 17:30 minute epic on The Outer Limits because why not? Negatron to Infiniti (mid 90s to 2009)- More industrial metal than before Target Earth, Post Society (EP) (2013-2016) - A throwback to (in my opinion at least) Nothingface to The Outer Limits, but even more clean, even more progressive. I remember some of Post Society reminding me of Black Sabbath and other early metal The Wake, Synchro Anarchy and Morgöth Tales (2018 - 2023) - I haven't actually listened to these yet, but I'm guessing they'd continue what Post Society started

New to me. One of the guitarist's voicings + some of the vocal structure in the second part gave me some Killing Joke vibes. Interesting. Sampling: I knew the Emu Emulator was around in the early 80s (I (81), II (84), III (87)), and the Ensoniq Mirage showed up in 85... but what I didn't realize was the Fairlight was released in 79 (and the Synclavier had the sampling option added in 82).

context: this is 1989...this was so out there for the time, and then the follow up albums are so insane and different... this was the last "thrash" album for awhile... you have to do "Jack Luminous" from the 1994 album "The Outer Limits" - 17 minutes ! and it does not bore or seem long.. it's insane (think space metal/pink floyd metal). The vocals.... Snake was very unique... and yeah, they had such a distinct thing going on, by this point they were really polished in their own thing. I am still waiting for you to discover King's X :)

well, since you asked... Voivod to me's like an everything bagel! - Rush, Crimson, Sab/Ozzy, Alice, Floyd, Metallica, PIL (the band surely wear their influences on their tee's!). One solo from 'The Wake' is just total Brian May. so yeah... it's all in there!

@@AndrewRooneyDrums Their last 2 albums (The Wake 2018 & Synchro Anarchy 2022 are also incredible. Perfect examples of Sci-Fi metallic Progressive rock with incredibly adventurous composition structures. For a band that's 40 years old & to still keep producing stunning art like this, is virtually unheard of. They just keep re-inventing themselves. Gods !

Voivod is my favorite band. Saying they're just "Trash" isn't really an accurate statement. They have always explored their sound and have kind of distinct eras or sounds while remaining "Voivod". Kind of in the vain of a Rush or King Crimson. Would love to see more reactions as it's like rediscovering that song again through someone else. Some recommends: Heavy Raw Thrash: Korgull the Exterminator Progy "weird" Thrash: X-Ray Mirror Prog/"heavy rock?": Jack Luminous *highly recommend, Outer Limits underrated album Modern/Current Voivod: Orb Confusion

Lmao you ARE correct, I meant beating. I imagine drums are probably a bit chewy and hard on the teeth, though the shells might make great toothpicks, esp after Keith Moon has his way with them. Safe bet you can draw a direct influential line from Black Sabbath …as well as Pink Floyd, Yes, ELP, and other Progressive bands… to ANY 80s metal bands. Same goes for all the Punk & Hardcore bands, Seattle bands and that whole Alternative scene…. Even if they were just influenced to say “I DO NOT want to do that” lol Voivod’s first album came out in 1984, so is really the Canadian Metallica/Anthrax/Slayer/Megadeth. If you were to extend the Big 4 of Thrash out to the Big Five, Voivod SHOULD be a top runner for that fifth spot, along with Exodus and Testament, and perhaps Switzerland’s Celtic Frost. Perhaps they just were too thrashy to begin with, and then went too Proggy, and that’s why they never really hit the big time, in the way other metal bands did. Progressive Thrash is definitely a limited audience. BTW, speaking of “bands you’ve never heard of but are sure to like”, I have a Progressive Hardcore band lined up for you, too. Progressive and Hardcore are basically mutually exclusive terms, since Progressive generally fills up space with as much oddball s**t as possible, and Hardcore’s idea of oddball is to strip the music down to its very essence, and play it as aggressively as possible. BUT this band does it incredibly well! Fans of Hardcore probably already know who I mean, since, as you can imagine, there arent many Progressive Hardcore bands. Hint: its not going to be NoFX’s 18 minute skate punk epic, “The Decline”. Also, they’re another Canadian band… SO GLAD you liked this, Andrew! One of my favorite things is turning people onto new shit theyve never heard, and blowing their mind! Its also why I love these reactions channels, because it reminds me of how elated I felt when I first heard those songs. Watching reactors hear Boston, Led Zeppelin, or a specific track like … Cat Scratch Fever by Ted Nugent, or Making Plans For Nigel by XTC… for the first time, is so cool! MORE greatness in the works. You havent heard the last of me, yeti!

Sometimes you see a reaction video and wonder it it was real. This one Andrew, was real. The dilemma churning in your head was there and you DID have the right appreciation for what it brought to you as an experience. I know you didn't want to "offend" with your comments, and dont worry. Give them, honest and true. It was dirty, and gritty, and that's what it was supposed to be. Grew up on these guys and they are a hidden gem.
