I'm confused. I've always thought a windlass is simply a winch for lifting heavy weights (like anchors) and that on a boat there are many types/options including a drum winch or the modern winch with or without a capstan. So what i'm saying is a drum winch is a windlass if it's lifting a heavy load such as an anchor.

Don't forget that you have a lot of heavy chain above the center of gravity. That's the main disadvantage of this configuration.

That'll depend on where you mount it... no reason you can't use a hawse pipe & roller and mount the winch below deck in chain locker etc.

I have a jeebus fish on the back of my car... only he has feet and it says "Darwin" in the middle. No reason you couldn't add feet to your fish and make a statement. :) My winch has the word "Viper" etched in, however.
