Biggest regret is Not practising coz ... 1. I told myself that i aint gonna make it any where as a musician.. being a musician n especially a drummer is generaly frowned upon in pur society as just being noisy 2. Being too old to start drumming of all things 3. I will never be good enough to make a living out of it 4. And lastly I dont have a drum kit.. can't afford one ...and no one's gonna encourage me getting one .. coz it's expensive.. noisy.. waste of time.. etc etc .. but i managed to stay afloat with baby steps.. surviving at 48 yr of age

Spending too much time worrying about gear instead of just getting good at playing with the gear I have.

A beginner's journey is definitely one of, if not, the most vital point of a drummer's entire chemistry with the instrument. It's also very great to know how it is never too late to right those wrongs and simply get better. Cheers for this video man!

If you’re a drummer and are looking for a sign to take that leap, this is it. A few years ago, I joined DBO Academy because I needed structure, guidance, and direction. I made the decision that I needed to restart and forget everything I had “learned” (self-taught), because I got so tired of watching videos of myself playing horribly with NO technique 🥲 Was it hard? Yes. But it was SO worth it. That choice I made has brought so much to fruition for me, and my drumming has reached levels I never thought possible! I hope you find your way, and we welcome you inside DBO Academy to overcome those many frustrations we’ve all faced.

I'm learning a new song and I thought I would have nailed it by now but some parts are giving me lots of troubles. Thank you for reminding me that It's totally normal to experience that and that I need to be patient and work harder one step at the time . One thing I will never regret is stumbling upon your channel and eventually joining DBO Academy 😁 all of you guys there are keeping me pushing forward and helping me be a better drummer, cheers and stay true ✌

I am both Marching/Drum Corps player and Drum Set player. Being a marching drummer really boosted my journey towards the kit because we're used to heavy sticks on the marching drums and transitioning to the lighter drum set sticks feels nice. Also the rudiments we played at the marching band improves my overall technique on drum kit. I really appreciate your YT Channel for being informative and helpful for all levels of players(beginners-pros)

I would add something to this video. It goes along with the mindset aspect. You should never look at it "failing an audition". Even if you don't mean to, that is going to naturally give yourself a negative mindset. Just look at as you not getting the gig. There are a million factors that could go into that decision and you "failing" doesn't have to be one of them. You didn't get the gig, what did you do well? What do you think you could improve on and how? What do you wish you would have thought about before the audition? Learning and growing is never failing.
@Chevy2892 жыл бұрын
True, and also another big big factor is more rather determination more than motivation. With motivation that shit will run out and most likely people wouldn’t have that drive that determination would give you. You need to know in your self that yes I believe in me, and yes im gonna become a professional musician. 👍🏼

This video is extremely helpful. I definitely had an ego when I first started drumming so it made me laugh out loud right at the beginning when you brought up some of your struggles. I had air drummed for 9 years before I actually sat behind a real kit for the first time. A few days later, I nailed my first audition and they wouldn't believe me when I said it was my second time playing on a real kit. I also went through the comparison phase and that time sucked. I still don't know if I'd like to be a session guy but I'm currently in 5 bands (playing drums in 4 of them). Ideally, I'd like for any or all of the bands to gain enough traction that we could sustain ourselves with just music (song sales and touring, etc.) but the business side of it is a bit of a turn off. Living in NYC, I come across great drummers and awesome bands all the time, most of which have regular jobs, so I don't think about the ideal situation and instead focus on having fun playing the instrument I love, creating music that people might find interesting, and performing at local venues for that rush. Again, though, awesome video brother!

Anyone can learn to play the drums or improve their own playing. These are some great tips on what not to do. If you play on the drums and you really enjoy doing so then my tip is: find a single drumming playform to practise and improve your drumming and stay there to learn and use these tips to keep at it, this way you won't get overwhelmed with all of the different drumming platforms available. Also as a beginner don't get overwhelmed by the drumming equipment, any acoustic or electronic drum kit that has: a snare, 3 toms, 1 bassdrum with single pedal, 1 or 2 crashes, 1 ride and 1 hi-Hat is a standard setup and is a good way to start with. See what your situation allows in case of noise (acoustic or electronic) and see what you can get with your budget, look for second hand deals as well as with acoustic drums if everything else is still good usually replacing the heads should make it good as new
@xxnvytechxx64172 жыл бұрын
Something I’d regret is not starting playing kit till later. Just now getting into actually playing the drum kit instead of just hammering snare. Also can we take a sec to look at the beautiful transitions you always have?

I've only been really trying to learn to play drums for a few months. So far, my regrets are: using a broken kick drum pedal until I realized it truly was broken and not believing the guy who left it at my house; deciding to jump into learning what I thought were simple songs right away only to realize that they were actually very hard to play (and only simple compared to stuff by bands I like such as Dream Theater and Leprous that are like double-black-diamond ski hills where you have to sign a waiver); not actually trying harder years ago when I first got that broken kick and the rest of the kit that goes along with it. Then again, the best time is ten years ago; the second best time is now.

Well for me watching this video, my problem is that, since the last months of 2021 I started working 2 jobs that are very time-energy consuming and as a result, I only find time to practice once per week, which is really low. I don't know what to do from this point on to be honest, I just play along to my band's songs so I won't forget them in the long run, but at the end of the day, my skills don't evolve. Is anyone in the same spot? :/ BTW Gabe, thank you for all the videos you upload, they are very encouraging to be honest, keep up the excellent work!!
