Nobody can capture the sounds of drums and cymbals the way you folks at DCoP do. There's another well known drum shop in the southern US that posts a ton of product videos, but I always come away so disappointed because the audio quality is just not there, and it makes it hard to have confidence in what a person is hearing. You people NEVER have that problem. And it's very appreciated! So thank you for all your hard work and care!!

This was such a great demo! I can imagine all of the work that goes into making this video, so thank you for doing that. I have an Audix mic pack (doesn't include the overheads, but I bought 2 Audix f15 mics a while ago (I don't think they make them anymore). I love the side-by-side comparison of the Audix and Earthworks. I am very pleased I chose the Audix. Not only for the price, but for the sound too! Watching this video tells me that I made the right choice for my drumset, playing style, and bands I play in. Thanks again! Keep these coming! Y'all rock! (yeah, I'm from Texas....LOL)

I have in-depth experience with both of these sets of mics. I gig using the Audix kit, and my church uses the Earthworks kit. For super clean detail and a really accurate capture of the raw tone of the drums and cymbals, the Earthworks mics take the win. They capture transients super well, are very sensitive, and produce fat tones. The mounts, however, are an absolute pain to work with, and I would hate to have to set up and tear down these things night after night. The Audix mics are a little more "pre-eq'd". They sound great, very clean, big tones, but are not the most accurate representation of the raw drum sound. In a live setting, they work super well, however, because it's so easy to a great sound quickly. Also, the mounts are superb, reliable and strong, and really easy to set up and tear down. If I'm doing recording or are in a situation where the drums stay set up always, I'm using the Earthworks. If I'm buying a kit for regular gigging from venue to venue, it's Audix, all the way.

Earthworks sound is much closer to reality than Audix, that's for sure. Bass drum has a more punchy , rounder sound. Toms are more open and detailed, while you can't hear that huge difference on the overheads. Do they justify a price 3 times higher? Probably not but as usually happens in the hifi world, I'm a high-end addicted, a small difference requires a significant outlay. As far as the British kit I do confirm once again that it's one of my favourites and your videos follow the same rule. great job!

Great Video Tony! I remember you were kind enough to send me an email about your recording process. Now I got to see it in person. Nicely done! I kinda liked the Audix(“Audi” haha) better. The EW kick mic sounded weird to my ear. But in general the EW had a more airy sound, more high end. I thought the overheads were damn close on both sets. But again the EW we’re definitely a little brighter. The earthworks room mics add all the character. To have a nice wooden room like that is awesome. Thanks again. That’s a lot of work.

You gave me the Christmas gift I asked for last year!!! Thank You! I said before your drum recordings were always stellar for KZbin. Those mic choices are extremely good and natural sounding. I use km184 overs but the sr25s are amazing and so are the rooms. Love your snare mic vs sm57/451. I like e604 or 421 on toms but the earthworks probably sound better as do other condensers if you can afford them. I use a D12VR or D6 kick in mic but the ew sounds great. I don’t know your outside kick but I love my United 47fet clone. I’d highly suggest you check one out or the warm clones. I also use a sub kick LoFreq. I gigged and did our sound with a studio live board for years and they’re really good preamps and processing as well if needed. I’d suggest UA Apollo with their unison pres if you ever upgrade that but not necessary for your demo channel. Good mic’s sounding natural are what makes your demos so good. Every drummer I’ve ever met is deaf and can’t engineer a natural sound.

Thank you for making this video. I've been one of the folks begging for a how to video, and somehow I missed it when it came out. Glad I found it. What is most remarkable to me is that your "unprocessed" sounds are fantastic, and the processing is very subtle. I hear a little compression and eq, but it stays true to the unprocessed sound and never sounds processed. It's a beautiful, natural drum sound that I strive for. Would love to see another video on your processing. Thanks again for doing what you do.

Thank you Tony. I truly appreciate this behind the scenes presentation. I use the Audix D mics for toms and kick, SE7 condensers for overhead and a Shure SM57 for snare on the kit. I also use a CAD large diaphragm room mic in my 20x16 detached studio. These are connected to a Behringer XR18 and the sound is captured using Reaper. Sometimes I follow the Glynn Johns method of using 3 mics plus a room mic which treats the kit as one instrument. I like it for its simplicity.

“I basically make it sound the way it to me in the room.” So glad you guys don’t go for that, “Minimal processing to hear what it really sounds like.” That’s like saying, “I’m not going to process this digital photo because a camera sees exactly the way our eyes see.” It takes a lot of processing t get things to even approximate how they sound irl. And it’s alway just a shadow of the real thing. And you do a great job at it. Keep up the great work!

It just goes to show that it’s all about the room, the mic placement, and the drum. Tony knows what he’s doing and doesn’t need to rely on high end preamps for the videos. And he uses the right mic for the job for the room. I recently recorded drums in a larger room using an alternative setup with Presonus preamps instead of my Dakings, and with cheaper dynamic and condenser mics through a lower end system than usual. I got one of the best drum sounds ever with that setup. Great video as always guys! Tony I though you were using the Focusrite Clarett 8pre before?
@alsdrumhang
@alsdrumhang Жыл бұрын
My tastes on these two mic kits mirror what you picked out of them to use for "house" mics. The Audix snare mic sounded way more natural and live; the EW snare mic sounded pinched and dark in comparison. That same focus helped the EWs shine on the toms, and I personally thought the overheads were a close call, but liked the EWs a bit more. The Audix D6 is loved by some, disliked by others for its pre-EQed sound, but I much preferred it here over the EW mic. I understand sticking with an aesthetic, but I don't see how a skinny condenser mic can really do the best job in capturing a kick drum sound. Great job as always Tony!

I work as a PA operator in Japan. The DK7 microphone kit from Earthworks is my favorite. I regularly use and prefer it. Earthworks' microphones have a consistent frequency response, providing a wonderfully transparent sound that faithfully represents what I hear. This makes them highly effective when processing with EQ and other adjustments. However, AUDIX's DP Kit, despite being budget-friendly, delivers the distinctive colored sound of dynamic microphones, providing outstanding cost performance. If only both microphone holders were a bit more user-friendly, the setup would be more convenient during work. Thank you.

Came back to listen to this just to see the difference is how I remember it, given I'm about to invest in my studio again. I'm using the exact same gear, short of using Studio One. That said, I thought the Earthworks drum mics gave a bit more of an "honest" representation of the kit, especially on the toms/overheads....but, not even REMOTELY close to what's pushing a $2K price difference. Earthworks makes incredible gear...but, if you don't have disposable cash, it's virtually impossible to justify the price difference. GREAT demo.

in general, the audix mics sounded more punchy, which is usually what i'm after for drums. the Earthworks sounded more open. i think this would work better for overheads or just about anything in a jazz type setting. fortunately for me, i have a bunch of mics already. personally, i also use a combination. 2 dynamic mics and a condenser on the snare (one condenser underneath), 1D and 1C in/on the kick, condensers on my rack toms, dynamic mics on my floor toms. condensers for overheads and room. some of this is due to limitations set by my interface. i have to run patches of powered/non-powered mics. i can't control each channel individually. but, oh well. sometimes you can't control every little thing. to sum up. you guys get a great sound, and i ALWAYS check your videos when i'm scoping out a snare drum for a potential purchase.

Probably wouldn't matter on a typical club gig, but for recording the extra details would be a nice option. Excellent choice in cymbals, BTW. Most drums mics on market tend over enhance the low and low mids and tend to be scooped. The earthworks are way more natural sounding. Depends on what you want. If doing rock or metal I'd choose audix. If lighter def earthworks. The earthworks overheads though always sound great. Good comparison though. I use a huge mix of stuff depending on what I'm doing. Excellent rundown of your methods, and thorough review of two great options. The Earthworks just seem more open and detailed all around; it's especially evident on the snare, in the full kit clip; I hear quite a bit more shell resonance, which I like. The D6 on bass sounds more "finished," but not in a pleasing way; too scooped and too "metal" for my tastes. The beater attack sounds quite unnatural (the mic's near 10 db boost at 5kHz will do that). Omnidirectional room mics in XY isn't something I see often, especially with the Earthworks, which because of their small diameter aren't very directional even at high frequencies. I'd opt to space them a bit more, but hey, if it works, it works..

I thought the Earthworks mics had more air and a touch more presence, but was shocked to hear their kick drum mic seemingly distort the capsule! Defo distortion there. But, in the full kit unmixed DK7 clip, it sounded great! IMO not worth the 2k more. Also, this test doesn't show the off axis rejection, typically btwn snare/tom and hats. When bleed is our friend tho right? Great channel, love it!

@drumcenternh Жыл бұрын
Yeah, I hear what you are saying with the Earthworks kick drum mic. It does capture the sound differently than most bass drum mics. As far as off-axis rejection, the Earthworks stuff definitely excels with this. The bleed is low and the bleed that is there is actually quite musical. Thanks for the kind words by the way!

Great video! I’m just a drummer, no engineering experience. But the Audix mics sound almost pre EQ’d in their response. I liked that on the BD and snare, but wonder if you lose details in the frequencies? Would you be better off going with more detail and EQing yourself? Thanks !
@drumcenternh

Thanks! The Audix mics definitely have a bit more of a pre-eqed sound. The Earthworks are more detailed, but you don't loose a ton with the Audix either.

Great video! I am buying a mic kit and was looking at both of these. The clarity of the earthworks is undeniable, however if I was recording a darker record I might not want that super clarity. Audix overall kit sounded good as well! Both a vibe for sure and very usable in a pro situation. If your blending with samples Audix might be the way to go.

For the unprocessed the Audix sounded better to me but maybe because they are pre EQd. From what I remember the EW are flat.

Tony I so appreciate the video. I have the Audix DP7 mic set and was looking to upgrade to the Earthworks DK7. Honestly Tony, I know the Earthworks Mics offer a different type of recording sound but a difference between $1,000 versus $2,999. I don't quite hear the extra $2,000 in tonality in the demo. Am I that wrong?
@drumcenternh
@drumcenternh Жыл бұрын
Glad to hear it was helpful! Not wrong, the differences are subtle. That being said, I would consider adding a couple of Earthworks mics where it really matters, like the overheads. I think the D6, i5, D2, and D4s are great, but the SR25s are a definite upgrade as far as the overheads are concerned. I hope this is helpful! - Tony

I liked to the Audix actually over the Earthworks, but I am not an engineer. I just like to hit things... I am sure if I knew what I was doing, probably would get the Earthworks. And could afford them. I have some mics on my kit, just overheads and a bass mic, but am considering for my budget going to a Shure PGA 5 mic pack (no overheads). More or less for mixing into my headphones/in ears if needed and maybe some recording. I know they are lower end, but probably what I need for now. Thx for the content as always.

I much prefer the sound of the dynamic close mics, just a warmer more direct sound. I can see why you'd want a much sharper stick sound for playing metal or louder genres but mostly it's easier to mix drums that don't peak so wildly. Also I feel like a lot of the sound in your demos tends more towards a "live" drum sound with wide open toms and snare whereas in the studio you often are better off with a more muted sound since you will likely end up applying more compression and don't want the drums ringing forever.
