electronic music creators have almost always tuned their drum notes to match the melody, because it is simply logical. Drummers have historically simply slacked on their frequencies and gone with the brute force timed grenade approach. It's lacking in musicality. People talking shit about the kit size haven't seen Terry play on a normal kit. He can play incredibly on anything. He a master drummer/ percussionist and can do incredible things even on a trap kit. He must chose this route to suit his musical preference and to show that drums can do much more than just be a beat.

@@kignacio yeah that was incredibly boring to listen to, it sounded like a middle school marimba recital. i guess when you can just hit a different note then there is no reason to actually vary what you are playing? "I'll just do the exact same thing on 25 different drums". Maybe he was phoning it in since he likely gets pushed to do weird clinics all the time and people just clap for his kit anyway.

@saoka_2 жыл бұрын
"Musical" is not quite the right word to describe it. That implies normal drum solos are less musical. "Melodic" is probably the word you are looking for. Percussion often focuses on rhythm and timbre with little emphasis on pitch. In this case the drummer is varying the pitches a lot more and creating melodic passages which is probably the aspect that you find more "musical"

I've been on a massive Bozzio kick lately so I'm really happy to see this. The melodies and orchestrations are very Zappa-esque and it's brilliant. People constantly poke fun of the size of his kit and style without fully understanding his concept and approach to the instrument, that being more melodic and orchestral. And for anyone not familiar, 'Heavy Metal Bebop' by the Brecker Brothers, 'Danger Money' and 'Night After Night' by UK and 'Spring Session M' by Missing Persons are hands down his best post Zappa work. No one played with that kind of ferocity at that time aside from probably Cobham when he let loose. But to me, Terry completely stands in a class all his own. A ture pioneer and innovator in every sense of the word.
