This right here is why so many old-school jazz drummers had obscene foot control and people were like "but most of the time they're just keeping time on the kick, how is it so crisp and clean" THIS. This is the answer.

Years ago, I had the privilege of taking private lessons with English session great Neal Wilkinson, the first lessons wear on rudiments and role notation, all of which were based on song form. This made EVERYTHING sound like music to me, John this was clearly a series of drills, but really swung hard...

Being a drum teacher, I'm always looking for new ways to teach old stuff and also to challenge my students and myself with new musical aplications of "already played" things. Thanks very much!

Thank you John for passing on Alan's lessons. I was fortunate to study with Alan in 1979 at his home while I attended Berklee. I still have most of my recorded lessons with Alan. Love your intro to Alan's Drummer's Complete Vocabulary. He was a master teacher with out a doubt! I uae his concepts as a staple when I teach. You nailed "A Train"!

I haven't seen the book but you can also play the stickings straight between the bass and left hand snare while playing straight 8th or quarter notes on the ride Of course that would be more useful for rock. Thanks for the tutorial. Loved it. I'll have to get his book.

This really works I studied w Alan Dawson too All drummers need to start singing the melodies of all those great song standards that John mentioned Listen to songs like that and vary from the popular radio KISS 108 type stations Your soloing will immediately get better guaranteed !!

Shouldn't be it has part of accented eighth notes Lesson One then 28 bar exercise. Page 50 is Lesson Two. I'm speaking here of Stick Control. In The Alan Dawson, book by John, p.49 is a continuation of soloing from p.48.

I don't understand how Alan wanted us to play the parts in the book in the 4 way coordination section? The parts that say shorts and longs and play the line?
@michaelnesi0827
@michaelnesi0827 8 жыл бұрын
+Larry Tate A long note would be a quarter note, and a short note would be an eighth note. The notes on those pages are comprised of 1/4, 1/8 and rests. Dependent on the variation you are using when you encounter and 1/8 note play that on snare, quarter on bass.

Dear John, TYVM for the video!! I have a question only you could answer: knowing well Alan Dawson, could you confirm me if he actually plays a "5/4 "on "Take Five" live (drum solo excluded obviously :) ) that he only once played with Dave Brubeck? That is probably the greatest drum solo i've ever heard in 30yrs of drumming.... I ll share the link if you don't know it PS the album is called "we are togethere again for the first time"....amazing album !! (that sound much better than on youtube) kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z6XFhKyoor2ibJI
