and just think.. This video is 6 years old. She is older and better now (27 now). She's been the Jazz Avengers along with multiple solo projects ( like and up coming show in June with ex Nemophila guitarist Saki)

Senri is amazing. One thing I would love to see her add is an ice bell. I've heard a lot of drummers do solos. Even A tier drummers. Some are great. A few are not. The ones who are not seem to hit drums more by chance and in such a disjointed pattern that there really is no pattern. Senri has a well structured drum solo with definite patterns and build throughout. She demonstrates she can keep a beat and add a lot of accents and character to her drumming.

I've been following Senri Kawaguchi for more than a decade and consider her to be one of the best drummers in the world. In fact, I found Band-Maid through Senri. My list goes something like this: Senri the best all-round drummer - she stands out in any format or music. (Akane the best hard rock drummer); Band-Maid is the best Hard Rock band; The Warning the best original, trio rock band; Hiromi Uehara the best jazz fusion pianist; Yuja Wang the best classical pianist; and Tatiana Smailyuk from Jinjer the best Metal vocalist -- amazingly, all women! A lot of people are recommeding The Jazz Avengers and I like them a lot as well, but I don't think they are necessarily the best showcase for Senri's skills since a lot of their music is sax focussed and there are 8 people to share the load of the music since all of them are so good. They are really worth checking out though, The Jazz Avengers are really good. I just think her solo work (under her own name) and Kiyo*Sen (a duo project with keyboard player Kiyomi Otaka) are better showcase for her drumwork. That said, all of her projects are great to watch. Here are a couple of others that are not as known: - 坐音 ZAON (fusion with tradition instruments, also including one of the Jazz Avengers sax players) - KKK-CORE (2 drummers (with her late mentor/drumteacher Kozo Suganuma together with a keyboard player) - URAGAERU (possibly a onetime thing she did, covering tracks from Fragile which was the fusion band from her late drumteacher, she player together with the original guitar player on that one and a great bassist) But I am sure there are so many projects she worked on. Like there is : BLUE NOTE TOKYO ALL-STAR JAZZ ORCHESTRA (from january 2021), I am pretty sure she got to work with the Blue Note All-Star Jazz Orchestra a couple of times and there is also a great video that's over 10 years old now with sax player Yucco Miller and 2 other great musicians: 『Lover Come Back To Me』 大西由希子×川口千里(Senri Kawaguchi)×岩永真奈×長崎祥子 (which I check out regularly).

First thing I noticed when I saw her with a Japanese Jazz Big Band (other than she was a beast) was how she seemed farther away from her kit than I'm used to seeing. A drummer friend of mine pointed out that she was using extra long sticks, which I didn't even know there was any such thing. That explained that, but to me it seems like to be as accurate as she is using a longer stick would be even more difficult. Would be interested in any drummers' take on that.

Next show him another japanese young lady Kanade Sato. She's a couple years younger than Senri and plays the same style as Senri. Just as good, well almost.

Seen Senri live at Blues Alley, Meguro City, Tokyo, a small venue w/ around 100 fans on her Bday (she served her Bday cake to each of us after the show). The remarkable thing is that she hits hard with that precision. Akane is next as a hard hitter, Po! Thanks, Sensei-Dave for your great insight! 🦍🍌

OK - Dave acted different here. Normally he is a bit goofy, showing his feelings. But here he was concentrated and looked closely. I think even Dave dropped his jaw a bit. Yes, Senri is a treat. Not only because she is a lovely lady. But she can drum also. And how she can drum! When looking, after a while it is only the drums and her drumsticks you are looking at. In amazement. You are wondering: what will happen next? Because, it is not obvious. She is not doing a regular beat. Nothing is repeating. Then, of course, that she is a nice and lovely person do not hurt.
