The track she played was Ladies Talk from Kiyo Sen, her 2 person band with Kiyomi Otaka, a keyboardist from Casiopea, another Jazz Fusion band. Akira Jimbo of Casiopea is also another incredible Japanese jazz drummer to check out videos for.

Senri also got her BA degree in Social Science (not music) from Waseda University at the age of 21. Her drum sensei was the inimitable Kozo Suganuma.

Hearing Senri alone is one thing but she really shines when she carries and completes the group. She picks up the swing and makes it fly.

Oops! Something went wrong with the Internet connection. Sorry if this is a duplication. Just FYI. The etymology for "Senri" is that "Sen" means "one thousand" while "Ri" means "a mile". Hence underlying connotation is that "A journey of thousand miles must begin with the first step" Kudos to her parents!

We no longer need to wonder where the spirit of Buddy Rich now resides.
@zappafan11763 жыл бұрын
By the way, those sticks she uses are 3 inches longer than standard.. she has them custom made to help her achieve more power. They might be available for everyone by now. the stick tosses she does there are a bit more complicated than the ones she did even a year ago.... she's been practicing. ; ^) The camera didn't pick up the music on the second song, but it's one she's been playing for years, that's why it sounds familiar.

Wave... I'm curious, Senri and Akane hold their sticks so differently. Is that significant? Or just a preference?
@WavePotter3 жыл бұрын
That’s a good question! I’d have to take a closer look at them both to see exactly what the difference is, but yes I would guess Senri has a much looser and relaxed grip for the intricate and dynamic jazz stuff she plays and Akane has a firmer more straightforward grip for heavier rock style with less nuance and more of a solid driving beat foundation to a rock band. Since everything is more compressed in rock than in jazz, the notes need to be more consistently played, whereas jazz dynamics can be all over the place.

@@WavePotter Akane holds her sticks further up... You can see it in the drum solo in Freedom.
@COTTERO3 жыл бұрын
@@WavePotter I'm not sure Wave, if you look at Akane's mini solo on "Freedom", her grip looks very loose. On the other hand, Senri has been criticized by jazz purists for being a hard hitter. If you don't believe me, you can find out how she destroys a drumstick in this solo for Drumeo: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jGa8dat6qt5-eqs Also in Drumeo she has a couple of video tutorials to improve the power on drums.😎

@@mattdhorstman I’ll check that out when I get a chance!
@WavePotter3 жыл бұрын
@@COTTERO very very interesting! I wasn’t saying she doesn’t hit hard. I just mean she loosens her grip for the pianissimo trills and probably needs to constantly adjust grip depending on what dynamics she’s playing at. I would guess being ok with heavy hitting is why she’s such a standout! It adds to her dynamic range. But now I’m very curious!

Senri is probably the best drummer in Japan technique wise. She's great as a solo drummer but I'd love to see the magic spells out when she finds a perfect band or a musician to work with where she can release her full potential (although I personality prefer Yoyoka and Akane's style better). Does she write music at all, if she does that would be awesome.
@Ceekayedmusic3 жыл бұрын
She already has two of such bands. Her solo project Senri Kawaguchi (in which she also composes most of the tracks afaik) and her duo with Kiyomi Otaka, Kiyo*Sen. Check them out, all of their albums are on Spotify at least.

You wondered about what the circumstances are here. Then you wished someone would turn off the other music in the background. Look at the sign on the wall behind her. A drum supplier. I'd lay money this is a music industry equipment event such as NAAM, though more likely a far eastern event of the same type. Wanna sell drums? Hire Senri Kawaguchi to demo them. Wow, your skins sound amazing. Meanwhile some other musician or group is demonstrating amps or a guitar brand nearby. These events can get noisy. Several videos on YT show one artist or another in January 2020 playing demos or even mini concerts at the NAAM event on the left coast US - Aldious and D_Drive among them. D_Drive was brought over by Marshall. Anyway, such events serve a function and Asia is a big place, so I would expect a number of similar industry events in various countries there.
