REAL TITLE IS "IN THE GARDEN OF EDEN"...... but someone was reportedly so drunk that they believed lyrics was In-a-godda-Da-Vida..... I have heard 2 versions, singer was so wasted he slurred title (but he doesn't look wasted or out of it at all), & other version was that producer one who was wasted in telling name of song to band..... *Think of screaming guitar licks at **16:53** & **20:50** being primordial jungle sounds in the Garden of Eden.*

One of the guys in our percussion section took that drum solo apart and wrote parts for the snares, toms and bass drums and it became our marching cadence for when we would take the field for the half-time show. You shouldn't be surprised that such music was written and played in '68. There were many bands that ventured into this trippy and heavy extended jams. Nothing like it exists today, or can. The "market" isn't there. Young people don't have the attention span for such vibes. Funny how much variety existed decades ago as opposed to today.

It's equally as long. A video of that exists. It was recorded on live television. They went commercial free for the entire song just to make sure they got it in without interruption. It is really worth listening to because it is the earliest use of a modern talk box. Seen Iron Butterfly in 1968. It was at the ASU Activity Center. At the time it was the wildest and best concert I had ever attended. Got to tell this fun fact: The band went into the recording studio. The engineer told them to run through the song to check the sound levels. What they didn’t know is Don Casale hit the record button. When they finished, he asked them all to come into the booth because he wanted to show them something. Hence: “ one take”. They overdubbed the guitar and the vocals. They we’re finished. This is raw and as classic as it gets. Towards the middle after the guitar screeches,..you can hear someone toggling switches or something.True story as told by one of the members. Ron Bushy i believe. First album I ever bought. I wore out several albums and a few CDs as well. I loved it all to hell and to this day I know every note of every instrument the whole way through.. A while back I saw Iron Butterfly with Ron Bushy, Lee Dorman and Mike Pinera playing at a bar here in Denver. When they got to this song I managed to work my way up to the stage and was no more than 15 feet away from Ron Bushy while he played this drum solo note for note just as he'd done on the original recording. That thing had fascinated me and all my high school friends for years. I always thought that many of the different tones and perhaps the dynamics were studio tweaks of some kind. Nope. It was ALL Ron Bushy's technique. He played different spots on the different drums to get the tonal shifts and his use of dynamics was positively stellar. A genius hippy drummer. Lee Dorman (bassist), Ron Bushy (drums), Eric Brann (who was 17 when hired by the band and recorded this song) and Doug Ingle (keys and vocals) are all deceased, with Doug passing just a couple of years ago. Doug's father was a church organist, which clearly influenced Doug's playing. Doug pretty much retired from the business and became a house painter. When they hired Eric Brann (so the story goes) Doug was sitting with the record producer who was amazed at the talents of the new guitar player. He asked Doug, "How long?" Doug said, "Seventeen." The producer said, "Well that much experience shows up in his skills. He's amazing." Doug said, "No. He's seventeen years old. He's been playing guitar for three months." When Eric quit the band he was replaced by Mike Pinera, guitar player/singer for Blues Image. Unfortunately Mike also left us last year. Iron Butterfly put out one album with that lineup, which yielded one single, "Easy Rider," which has always been a fan favorite. Check it out.!

Back in 71' when I was a sophomore my 15 yr old cousin came to visit from Germany. When I played this for her she was so blown away that she almost passed out. She demanded that I buy her a copy so I gave her mine to take home. She said that back in Munich the kids went wild over it too. It was already a classic here so I was surprised that no one had heard it.

One of the first vinyls I bought when it first came out and had to sneak it into the house and only listen when my folks were gone.

Just for context, Lots of rock groups had 2 versions of hot songs; A 3 minute version for radio and a long version for albums. The maximum length for these songs was about 22 minutes, one entire side of a vinyl record.

I was 6 when this came out. I would climb up in the back window of dads car, put my ear on the speaker, and listen to it. Dad wouldn't play it loud enough to hear it any other way. Dad didn't like music. He thought it was a waste of time. Well dad, i waste my time a LOT!!!

Another band from this era that you would enjoy is Vanilla Fudge. Their cover of the Supreme’s “You Keep Me Hanging On” was one of their greatest hits. I suggest listening to their live rendition of this song on The Ed Sullivan Show that is quite epic. Their drummer, Carmine Appice, is a legendary showman and was an inspiration to the likes of John Bonham.

i love your wording on your reactions, like, for instance, swampy. i never would have come up with that word for this song. but , it really does sound a little swampy. love the reactions, keep it up.... thank you.........

Thanks for playing this rare and fascinating piece. No sure what about it caused me to make my opening song on my radio program but my radio audience seemed to love it. I played a lot of psychedelic music: new stuff for most of my audience in 1968! We sure had fun!

On Saturday, March 16, 1968 Iron Butterfly played In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida in a concert at my high school, South High, Torrance, California. No one in attendance had ever heard this song before. It was not recorded until May 27, 1968 and released on June 14, 1968. They played this for at least 20 minutes and everybody was enthralled by this song. During the drum solo every one else left the stage in the gym and then one by one came back on stage and fell in on their instruments. It was a fantastic concert !!

I remember back then some called under ground rock others coined it as acid rock either way it was a real fun tune to rock out on they even used the drum solo at the Seattle seafair hydroplane races back then!!
