This song and Jacobs Ladder probably puts Permanent Waves over the top as my favorite (by a slim margin) Rush Album. 😊

This is one of my favorite live performances by Rush. For me, often their live performances really make the songs come to life. Another one I love is 'Where's My Thing? Here It Is' live in Dallas. Two instrumental solos and a hard-charging pace throughout. Exhilarating!

I agree, after hearing the live version I really became fond of the song even more. I will be watching that live instrumental soon. Look out for a reaction video!

@@timeritual I play guitar so the whole time shifts are interesting to me. Once again, thank-you. More Rush please, did you do Xanadu live, or working man live in Cleveland, I forget now. Or 2112 from that same concert, Test for echo from that concert too. Keep at it.

Yeah this one really is a drummer’s song. I thinks this one highlights Neil’s, and the whole band’s, ability to compose a piece that develops. Repeated sections of the song are not played the same way twice. One of the 4/4 sections he plays the second time with a lot of triplets, giving a 6/8 feel (or really a 12/8 feel) without changing time signatures. You pointed out the off-beat ride bell at the end, then he doubled it - the man can’t even play a two-bar motif the same without having to make it interesting, lol. It sounds like you’re intimately familiar with Subdivisions, but if you haven’t seen it please check out this DRUMCAM view of the song performed in Frankfurt. It is a study in subtle mastery.
