This is exactly what I do. I would have given my grans hind leg for a decent playing guitar when I first started. I find cheap guitars, get them playing nice before I release them back into the wild. I donate them to music charities, hoping someone will have a better start than I did. Great video, thanks for all your vids!

@tonyhomewood826415 күн бұрын
@werewolflover8636 I agree, but I only replace what really needs replacing and where possible use spares from my spares box. The reason I do it is because I had to retire from work due to a disability and this is my light therapeutic exercise, whenever my body allows me to. I'm not trying to make a silk purse out of a sows ear, but if I can make the start of someone's early guitar journey easier then it's worth it.

In 2011, I paid $150 for a 1987 Ibanez RG 340, made in Korea by Peerless. The rosewood neck and frets were perfect, the "solid" bass wood body was meh. The ibanez humbucker was great, but the mid and neck scs sounded shit with ANY gain. The TR-1 floating bridge was surprisingly solid: proper routing for deep dives, with curved locking nut and a string tree helping tuning stay. Never had to level frets, ridiculously low action and had to lower the pickups. There is a black one listed for $400 right now. Shit like Glarry is a disgrace.

I watched the video because I was interested in the craftsmanship. I'm almost 60 years old and have never learned to play an instrument, but always dreamed of learning the guitar. To my untrained ears this instrument sounds wonderful. You do a good job with the guitars, show a lot of experience and skills and, above all, love for the craft. And a good musician at that, it's a pleasure to listen to you, and the explanations are just as good as your guitar playing. Greetings from Germany.

I think the thrill of guitar hunting is actually higher on a cheap guitar. When you pick up a custom shop or any really well made high end guitar it’s probably going to be good. At least with modern manufacturing. Sure it might need a little work to make it right for the player but it probably won’t totally suck. But a budget guitar… Something under $200, when it turns out to be a player I feel like that’s such a fun and exciting thing. When you get something that is within reach.

Harley Bentons are supposedly value-for-money some of the very best guitars outthere. It's Germany's biggest chain of instrument shops having them made in China to their specifications and feel and are praised in many a KZbin video. Being a southpaw I have 20 odd guitars and I needed a right handed one to placate the visitors. So I purposefully bought a cheap Harley Benton TE20 MN (B stock). £69 ...dude. It feels like a proper guitar. It had good action out of the box and a decent sparkle blue finish. Pickups seemed perfectly serviceable. I recorded it for a couple of songs and it pretty much stayed in tune. The neck is fine and the guitar over all is a decent weight. Only issue is some slight evidence of fret sprout but not as bad as my Les Paul Faded. I mean ... £69 .... dude!

I bought a Harley Benton Strat for 79 €, set it up to my liking and put good strings on it and I fricken love this guitar! And nobody will steal it from the stage because I kept the fat Harley Benton logo on!

I have a 148 euro Squire, it's brilliant. I did have to change the electronics, nut, bridge and tuners as expected but the neck and frets are awesome and the setup was seriously good. All it really needed there was a good oiling and some fret end dressing with just a couple passes of my file. For another 140 using better p[arts than normal I got something that can keep up with any Player Strat, better than most in fact that I've handled. All in all the new CNC build aren't all that bad.

Very entertaining. I once bought a Glarry strat for $50 on ebay that someone had swapped out the pickups with 3 different models of vintage Lace Sensors. That guitar sounded and played nearly as good as a Strat Plus. Glarrys are decent guitars after they've had a little tweaking, and the price is insane. New player here, I've only been learning for a couple of years. Sometime last year I purchased a used Glary GST for $40 (usd) from a local seller. I did have to tighten some of the adjustment nuts on the saddle, but otherwise it has been fantastic!! Thanks to your video I did take a look at the nut on mine. OUCH, it just slides around. I'll get a local lughier to put on a new on. Thanks many times over for your review.

That was a lot of fun to watch. Isn't the English sense of humour priceless. "the nut was made from wank socks". etc. A lesson to a lot of guitar snobs. I keep flashing back to my one and only Glarry guitar. It, too, was an S-type. I refer to it in the past tense because I accidentally destroyed the body; yes, I'm an amateur and did an Eddie Van Halen.😎 Anyhow, before I did that, I did replace the nut, with some success. Unlike you, though, I went into the deal with replacing the nut as part of the plan from the word "Start." After that, well, maybe I got lucky in not destroying the neck. One thing I remember is being AMAZED at the extreme height of the nut. I don't remember even tuning the cursed thing before I replaced that nut. All guitarists will deal with some level of pain fairly well, but I'm not into the actual masochism required to try play that guitar with that nut -- especially in the cowboy chord area!

Adjust the nut. Seat the frets and level them. A good setup is beyond important. File the fret ends. That is the reason so many kids don’t play a guitar after you buy it for them. You could upgrade to CTS pots on it. Maybe a better nut. But a real upgrade? Tonerider TSR3 Classic Blues Pickups. They are $120 US and sound better than Fender Custom shop. The main thing is playability. Upgrades can come later. Might be better to start with a Squire. Should at least have a wood fretboard. Frets, nut, setup, strings. He did exactly what I would have to give away as a first guitar.

I believe that it is important for the player to advise what the guitar is plugged into eg amp, speaker, pedal. The sound heard on this video was great with very nice playing as well. Normally the sound I hear from YT is not good at all with all the compression etc, as well as crap speakers etc. Well done and thankyou

Well, that was very interesting indeed. And enjoyable. And your comment about getting these things, spending some time honing them, and then letting students have them is deep rooted kindness. No matter what may happen after, who knows? The sentiment is from the heart. Anyway, enough gushing, I have subscribed, and I'm looking forward to a glimpse into your rabbit hole... Sorry? While I'm here, why did you want to be a Luther, and did you have a role model?

First vid I have seen and well worth a sub. Love the content and presentation style. What a little sleeper that was. If they had done a little more work at the factory they could have doubled or even trebled the price but I suppose they dont need to as people just opt for the cheapest when their little 10yr old wants a first guitar..

Surprising how well it turned out, the new owner is enjoying it. There are some corkers coming up though...and some mingers

Fantastic demo, you told it like it is without any prejudice. Some bits crap, some bits canny - who knew! Entry level guitars have come a long way since my youth and my first guitar- a 'Kay' LP which you could cut cheese with the action. Keep up the good work fella.

What a bonus!! Lovely to find a Milehouse Studio video to watch before dinner. Great little piece of the entertainment and insight. My first electric guitar (Columbus 335 copy in silverburst) cost more than than £60 and that the was 50 fucking years ago. It was an unplayable dog too. Looking forward to Friday's video already and I am delighted to see your New Year's resolution to cut down on the amount of swearing has gone to the wall!!! When are you these jig videos that you promise going to land? Thanks Paul.
