Katy Lied has a special place in my heart. In 1976 I was 17 & a sax player from a local college invited to a jam session at his house. We were doing the Real Book thing, typical jazz standards. We took a break & he put on a Jazz Crusaders lp. the guitar player just knocked me out, so tasteful..of course that was Larry Carlton...After the session broke up his girlfriend came home..To my complete surprise it was a keyboardist that was in my band during high school (small time but had fun, gigs like opening for The New York Dolls) I hadn't seen her in over a year, she was coming home from where she work at a record store. She was carrying an armful of cut outs & handed one to each of us. She said that I would probably dig this one & handed me a cut out of Katy Lied..I checked the back credits & again Larry Carlton's name pops out at me!..(among all the other incredible musicians) it was a memorable day.. I think this album gets a bit overlooked but like all their albums there's great writing & musicianship on every track...nothing like The Dan.. hope you enjoy the listen..

19 year old Jeff Porcaro's debut on a Steely Dan album. Brilliant drumming track. Also I was so surprised to learn that this was Walter on the guitar solo. So nasty! A fun and snarky opening track!

That's Michael McDonald doing multipart harmony backing vocals on Bad Sneakers. Michael provided backing vocals on the Katy Lied, The Royal Scam, Aja, and Gaucho albums. He also played keyboards with the Steely Dan touring band. And of course, his singing and songwriting made the Doobie Brothers a Grammy-winning band before he began his solo career.

You said one side of Steely Dan and then the other. These guys are almost as multi-faceted as The Beatles. True, they had a “sound” you knew was theirs, but as well as their musicianship, their approach to songwriting is unique and is always fresh.

The solo albums from Donald Fagen really grow on you after multiple listenings. I went WTF after hearing the songs multiple times. But that’s just me. Some songs hit you the first time other’s grow into your favorite after awhile. I was in the same boat as you when I was younger. I’m sixty three. I finally got my act together in my thirty’s. Walters ride in a cab....“I was in a cab in New York City and the cab driver picked me up in front of the rehearsal hall, so he knew who I was, right? And he started telling me, ‘Yeah, those Steely Dan, y’know, those guys wrote the stupidest line of any song I ever heard.’ And I said, ‘No kidding, what was that?’ And he said, ‘Y’know, in “Kid Charlemagne” where the guy goes “Is there gas in the car?/Yes, there’s gas in the car.”’ I guess that’s quite a distinction for us, to have written the stupidest line in any song that’s ever been written.” LoL

Correct, this is the album where they went fully to being just the two of them in the studio. "Black Friday" is a relatively basic song harmonically and rhythmically by SD standards. That turnaround is sick, though. "Bad Sneakers" is one of those "Tales from the East Coast" SD songs (you correctly spotted it as an 'Aja' forebear, Lee), featuring future Doobie Brother and pop star Michael MacDonald on backing vocals for the first time.

I work for a homeless outreach company and feel blessed to give back. Yep. Ya never know what life has up its sleeve due to 10th highest rent city and cost of living . Income naturally no way matches or exceeds the costs here. But its my home since childhood and warm climate most of year. Im on my feet again finally and believe for now thats where my extra goes. Love your channel. Love your personality. Play more Ren and your stats will shoot up.. maybe try some Asaf Avidan( not 60s 70s) been around like 16yrs from Israel originally. Musically over talented. This song is about the crash of the stock market in 1929. It was known as "Black Friday. Then the "Great Depression." In the lyrics, he talks about guys jumping out of buildings to their deaths, because they had invested everything in the market, and then it crashed. True story obviously, if you know your history at all.
