Thank you to our Alpha patron Joel for this awesome request! Man, this one just gets the blood flowing. What a performance. They do such a great job here and i'm pretty sure i've already heard the chorus before! Maybe I have heard the Springsteen version... but yeah, this was awesome. So much energy.

This is definitely in my top 5 songs and maybe even my top 3. Written by Bruce Springstein and Perfected by Manfred Mann. I love this live version to show that they weren't just radio 1-hit wonders, but kick-ass musicians. The drummer killed it in this performance, not only playing, but singing backup as well.

Two other biggies from Manfred Mann's Earth Band were "Do Wah Diddy", featured in the Bill Murray movie "Stripes", and their cover of Bob Dylan's "Quinn The Eskimo" aka "The Mighty Quinn", which was also covered by the Grateful Dead.

Blinded by the Light had one of the most "misheard lyrics" in rock history-many thought the lyric "revved up like a deuce" sounded like "wrapped up like a douche."The album version of this song from the Roaring Silence LP sounds amazing with headphones. Manfred Mann falls into two bands-the 60s with hits Doo Wah diddy, Pretty Flamingo, Quinn the Eskimo and Sha La La-they broke up and reformed in the 70s with new members-their other hit-another Springsteen cover Spirit In The Night.

Classic radio staple from the mid- 1970’s ! Such a great request, Joel. Brings back a lot of memories from those days…. Pre-internet (pre MTV - pre-EVERYTHING) Midnight Special was an oasis in the desert where we’d get to see the bands we loved. Who remembers the King Biscuit Flour Hour on radio ? Full concerts to listen to (and get wasted to)….

A well known Bruce Springsteen song. Chris Slade on the Drums who would later replace Phil Rudd in AC/DC on drums. Manfred Mann on keyboards was Classically Trained on Piano and Majored in Composition; one of the reasons he was able to take established songs / hits and create their own version of them. They do an amazing version of Bob Dylan's "Father of Night, Father of Day". Well Worth a listen.

Daaaaeeeem, I always loved this song! Nice stroll down a memory lane of my childhood. I always LOVED his raspy voice but never saw them before. And I never knew the drummer was the one doing harmonies! The instrumentality in this song is just sick. It's awesome how you hear/listen to/relate to songs so differently decades later. My favorite line has ALWAYS been "Momma always told me not to look into the eyes of the sun. But, Momma, that's where the fun is." Hell, yeah, Momma.

This song is about the Band's experience of trying to make it, when they were first starting out in Los Angeles in the early 70s. It's a story of how corrupt and rigged the record business was, and how new Bands and artists had no choice but to take record contracts, that were totally unfair, and left Bands with a very small percentage, until maybe 5 years into the contract when they got famous enough to fight back. The weird characters in the lyrics of the song, were actually "nicknames" for real sleezy lawyers and record executives the Band had to work with for a while, until they got famous, and rich enough to fight back against the rigged system. Steve Winwood and his Band "Traffic" in 1971 recorded an iconic record called "The Lw Spark of High Heeled Boys." You should react to this song. It was and still is a Huge and iconic Rock song, 50 some years later. That song is Great! Thanks

MMEB were quite a name mid/late seventies, into the early eighties. Mixing prog, art rock, hard rock and catchy pop, with a lot of keyboard wizardry. Never really accepted by the critics, loved by millions. This is very much a tune form my youth. Manfred Mann made some brilliant pop in the sixties and is still active at 84. MMEB will come to my home town this autumn. I think I’ll go. Never seen the band, this can be my last chance to walk down memory lane with Mr. Mann.

I think I've heard 3-5 different versions of this song on the radio over the years. All of them were good. This is one of those songs that I find I enjoy the original studio version best, though the live versions have their benefits. On Midnight Special they usually played short versions of their song so more bands could appear on stage in one episode.

"Revved up like a deuce" from Mann's version is one of the most misheard lyrics in music, because of his odd pronunciation on the studio track (it's a little clearer in this live version). Why he changed it from Springsteen's "cut loose like a deuce" I don't know if we'll ever know. Great reaction, as always. Rock on, Lee!

Loving your review. This was a Bruce Springsteen song that he released in 1973. His version is so different from this version. And yes, you really need to hear the full length studio version of Manfred Mann's version to really get the sound they were going for... and to really grasp the audio effects they had (they really pushed the stereo). For killer Manfred Mann music, check out their Solar Fire or The Good Earth albums

Keith Emerson tried out Mike Vickers Moog and ordered one. He programmed it for him with many of the signature sounds he used throughout ELP career. Springsteen wrote this and Spirit in the Night (another hit for MM) in response to first album “not having a single”. He got a rhyming dictionary and wrote BBTL. BTW, Springsteen did entire album of songs in style of Witchita Lineman complete with strings and choir called Western Stars. He did one performance of album in his barn with neighbors and friends. “ There Goes My Miracle” and “ Western Stars” are standouts. Almost no distinction between studio and live so I prefer live.

Manfred Mann's Earth Band became quite popular for their covers - their two biggest radio hits were both Springsteen covers which were more popular than (and far better than, imo) Springsteen's original versions. Even so - the radio seldom played any of their original works, some of which were much better than the covers. The album before this one was called "Nightingales and Bombers" - it begins with a cover of Springsteen's "Spirits In the Night", but then continues with a collection of bluesy / funky / proggy / artsy songs of their own (with one more cover thrown in - Joan Armatrading's "Visionary Mountains") that make "Spirits In the Night" nearly the weakest song on the album ("Fat Nelly" is good, but "Spirits ..." is maybe a bit better). The best song on the album (imo, of course) is "Time Is Right" - starting with a great percussion improv, then some blues-rock, then jam-rock (but in odd time signatures), then psychedelic space-rock, then back to the blues-rock ... drummer Chris Slade absolutely kills it!

I have made a few records... and one of my biggest influences in my studio work is not Frank Zappa (he was amazing... but he came later and influenced me in other ways) it's Manfred Mann... there are SO MANY recordings by Manfred Mann for you to discover. Stuff that is MUCH...MUCH MUCH MUCH better than this... from "Get yor rocks off" to "Masque"... you have ALOT of ground to cover... and that's not even including Manfred Mann's pop group... OR Chapter Three... which is really mindblowing...dude... big rabbit hole.

Please start with studio versions. Please. Please. Always use album cut not single. People who weren't alive in the 70s might not know the difference between album cuts and singles (aka 45s). The 45s were often edited versions of album cuts cut down to be short for AM radio, 2.5 to 3.5 minutes generally. The album cuts, on the other hand, could be longer, and were more often the versions played on FM radio stations. In some cases the lyrics were even changed: in Steve Miller Band's "Jet Airliner" the FM (album) version said "funky shit going down in the city" and the AM (single/45) version said "funky kicks going down in the city." The album version is the way the artist wanted the song to sound. Live versions are approximations. Sometimes the live versions are more powerful and are preferrable. But not often.

Do yourself and your audience an unexpected favour, and react to a song off the album "Nightingales and Bombers" called "Time is Right". It's hard to pick a song to react to on this album cause they're all genius master pieces. The band is sorely underrated and especially this album with zero radio play. In my day if an album had no tracks on radio it meant the general public wouldn't appreciate it, which meant the album was totally killer. Also I'm pretty sure Springsteen never put music to the lyrics to Blinded by the light. The song parts you heard were straight from the radio version by M. Mann, which played on radio through 70's, 80's, 90's and 2000's and beyond. The reason I say that is Springsteen also wrote the song "Spirits in the Night" which is a killer track, which Springsteen never wrote music too. React to that also. I honestly can't recommend this whole album enough, it's in my top 6 albums along with Hendrix - Axis Bold As Love CSN&Y - Deja'vu Joni Mitchell - Court and Spark Van Morrison- Hard nose the Highway Mahavishnu Orchestra - Visions of the Emerald Beyond. Other albums after my top 5. Steely Dan - Countdown to Ecstacy. Boz Scaggs - Boz Scaggs Joan Armatrading - Whatever's for Us. Do yourself a favour and give all those a listen. I know you have touched on Deja'vu and Countdown to Ecstacy. They were very Happy Days. The list goes on and on.😅 Cheers🎉😊

never put the keyboards in the same category as DJs, they are night and day, DJs are rip offs, they are not musicians

I fn hate this song. The local radio stations played it to death when it came out, as soon as it comes on now I turn it off. They have so many better songs in their catalogue. Don't be a sheep, review a less played song.

Saw this lineup when you used to get three or four acts at a concert. This Concert had Mannfred Mann, Uriah Heep and Blue Oyster Cult. Try Father of Day Father of Night Mannfred Manns Earth Band Roto Toms are the best I had them

Dammit this version sucks. Bruce's version is by far better but never got the airplay. From his Greetings From Asbury Park album. Again, this version sucks!!!!
