Jeff Lynne is a genius, and you've heard him without hearing him. He produced songs by Tom Petty, Roy Orbison, George Harrison, and many others. He was one of the Traveling Wilburys and was literally the 5th Beatle when he produced and recorded with the surviving members on the 1994 Anthology project.

He worked with and was fully endorsed by all the members of the Beatles, including john. Jeff never officially met John, but john fully understood where they were coming from, and even called ELO "Son of the Beatles" and loved one of their early songs Showdown.

The Beatles put the ball down in 1970 and ELO picked it up and ran with it. And ran and ran. Lennon called them "sons of Beatles" I saw them and they played 27, yes 27, songs.

Jeff Lynne hired the same German orchestra he used on their two previous albums, now a 54 piece with a 32 voice choir (including their three resident string players). This is when ELO were at their most expansive, such a unique sound, and the production is in a class of its own.

So, in the late 70s we had Yes Genesis Return to Forever Weather Report Dixie Dregs Emerson Lake & Palmer And also….This!! Great double album. Lots of gems here. Can hear the Beatles influence. John Lennon called them the new Beatles As said very often, we were soooo musically spoiled And concert tics were $7 / $8 for floor seats to these shows. No backing tracks either Nice one, bro!!

Jeff Lynne was in the middle of writer's block and took a trip to Switzerland to try to break out of it. But the weather sucked until one day when the sun came out. Hence, Mr. Blue Sky.... Lynne is a genius and willingly acknowledges the debt he owes to the Beatles.... Mr. Blue Sky has been voted the happiest song in rock music. I just love ELO's integration of strings in rock music. They combine rock with classical influences. Sweet Talkin' Woman was always my favorite on this album, but A New World Record is a superb and essential album.... Lee, one thing I really appreciate about your reactions is that you don't stop the songs in the middle repeatedly but let them play out. Thanks for that. It really irks me when people stop songs.

ELO is a big rabbit hole - early stuff is the most challenging and proggy - latter stuff becomes more prog pop - but you'll always get the signature Jeff Lynne hooks, vocals, strings and production. Yup I could definitely hear the beatles and George Martin influence all over this piece. I loved it! The second half is much stronger (imo) then the first but it's about how you finish! Mr blue sky was almost a lost beatles track at points lol

Jeff Lynne produced this album! He also produced the 'new' Beatles' songs in the 90s Real Love and Free as a Bird. He tried to clean up Now and Then for the Beatles in the 90s to when they received it from Yoko, but the tech didn't exist yet. Jeff Lynne is a musical genius. @@L33Reacts

ELO is one of my favorite bands. I have 7 of their albums. I believe you will discover, the more you listen to ELO, you will come to love them A LOT. One of the top 3 best concerts I ever saw, when I saw them on this album tour, in Fort Worth, TX in 1978! The local newspaper I worked for, bought our concert tickets and hotel room, and I bought the plane tickets. They "let me" write a concert review, and they published it in the weekend entertainment section! That whole weekend experience was amazing, and the night of/the concert was in every way, a PEAK EXPERIENCE!🤩🤯😶‍🌫😏😊

Yass! So excited to see this one. :) Summer and Lightning is one of my favorites of theirs. I like the second half more than the first half as well. One of the first uses of vocoder in Mr. Blue Sky. Jeff also employed it in Sweet Talkin' Woman, and a few other songs. ELO was one of the first to make heavy use of a full spectrum of synthesizers. ELO is a deep, deep dive well worth taking! They were more experimental rock than any other genre, so you can hear Beatles, Beach Boys, disco, pop, art rock, synth before there really was synth, prog, orchestral rock and so on with them. One of my all time favorites, right up there (close) with the Beatles. I don't even know what to suggest next, but their entire album Eldorado is fire, with Can't Get It Out of My Head as a big one from it. Face the Music, A New World Record, Discovery, pretty much all their 70s fare has so much to choose from. Oh, Telephone Line is a really unique one of theirs. Their cover of Roll Over Beethoven (with the video!) is fantastic too. Long Black Road is a later song that really rocks, and like many others sounds totally different from the next. Great reaction Lee. ELO was seven members at this point but recorded with a full orchestra and choir to give the soundscape you heard. Credit must be given to Louis Clark who arranged and conducted the orchestration with Jeff Lynne. ELO is a rabbit hole that you need to fall through, so much diverse material. As a drummer give the instrumental ‘Fire on High’ a reaction, Bev Bevan’s drumming is superb.

Unlike many of its 1970s contemporaries, ELO has aged extremely well thanks to the genius of Jeff Lynne. Though ELO was never a showcase for drummer Bev Bevan, he did have a few standout performances (Fire On High for one), and services the band beautifully. His history in rock goes back to the mid-1960s with an association with greats of the time. And ELO management is very accommodating to KZbinrs. They rarely block.

As a kid I would listen to this side of the album (on a turntable) at night to put me to sleep. This is the culmination of what ELO could be, and the best side of an album of all time in my opinion. That song means so much to me ❤️ more then I could ever explain probably. I've been a huge fan of them since I was in high school and they were on their "first" big album exoplanet. Them and Between the Buried and Me are my favorite bands of my era. Pure prog magic. Coma ecliptic is a wonderful intro album to BTBAM and it takes you all kinds of strange places. It's a prog metal opera concept album. Every song is a different universe basically as a man searches his dreams for his dream life. I won't give away the ending because it's absolutely chilling the first time you get to it. If you like the contortionist you will love btbam.

I know I suggested their earlier albums, but you would probably like Time: "Time is the ninth studio album by English rock band Electric Light Orchestra, released in July 1981 on Jet Records. It is a concept album about a man from the 1980s who is taken to the year 2095, where he is confronted by the dichotomy between technological advancement and a longing for past romance" I go for some of the same music you like especially along the prog lines. Early Genesis, King Crimson, Yes, etc. I do like a lot of the newer fusion with metal too, as long as it's at least somewhat melodic. Thanks so much again for the rec!

The fire extinguisher... you would've thought it was a cowbell. They struck the side of the metal fire extinguisher to get the cowbell sound. Hey, when they were mixing and realised it needed a cowbell they wouldn't get a cowbell instantly. So, improvise!

Jeff Lynne and Bev Bevan took ELO to new heights when Roy Wood left the band, but they needed the avant-garde nature of Roy Wood to get started. You should look up the progenitor band for ELO, called "The Move", especially their later work (ie, when Jeff joined the band). The early Move stuff is great also. Check out "10538 Overture" and "Look At Me Now" from ELO's debut album to hear how the seeds of greatness were planted.

"The Move" was probably more famous in their UK homeland than here in the US. Great songs by them include "Fire Brigade", "Blackberry Way", "Tonight", and "I Can Hear the Grass Grow". The extened live version of "I Can Hear the Grass Grow", released on the album "Live at the Fillmore 1969" is epic!!! I'll stop now.....sorry for getting too excited.

Great band. Born out of 60's pop band The Move whose members, Roy Wood and Bev Bevan founded ELO. Roy Wood only lasted one album before 'musical differences' with Jeff Lynne led to him leaving and forming Wizzard. Eldorado is my favorite album of theirs and is effectively a single work.

Oh, Lee, it's kuhn-CHAIR-tow They have another song that's called 'Rockaria' and I pronounced it 'rock-uh-ree-uh' for the longest time, then I was like duh - it's rock aria as in an operatic aria lol! Also the opera bit at the beginning, the lady says 'oops' because she started too soon, or something, and they left it in. :D Their album Discovery is pronounced 'disco very' Some really creative people, mostly Jeff lol!
