Thank you to our resident Dead head Dave S for this fantastic request. Jerry was absolutely 1st degree shmurdering that poor guitar. It sounded amazing. It was enjoyable to see him a little further in his life and still absolutely rocking it.

Answers to your questions: Brent Mydland (mid land) on the keys joined the band in 1979, and stayed until he died of a drug overdose in 1990. Everyone else was with the band from the start, with the exception of Mickey Hart, who played from September 1967 until February 1971, and again from October 1974 until their final show in July 1995. He left the band for those 3 years, because his father Lenny, who was the band's money manager, embezzled $150K and disappeared. That is a 6 string bass Phil is playing. And, since you commented on the huge drum kits, I'm going to tell you about the format of a Grateful Dead show. Since the early years the shows consisted of two sets. The first set is comprised of mainly shorter songs with tuning breaks in between. Each band member sings lead on the songs they wrote, or on specific covers. There is almost always a Bob Dylan cover in the first set, in the middle of the set Bobby sings the "cowboy" songs (El Paso, Mama Tried, Big River, Me and My Uncle, and Mexicali Blues, which is actually a Polka 😅). These are often played together without a break in between. Songs without breaks between are denoted with a > in setlists. The first set always ends with a rocker that has a massive jam at the end, like this Deal. The second set is reserved for the longer jam songs and are mostly played one into the other, like Scarlet Begonias>Fire on the Mountain, or Scarlet>Fire in deadhead parlance. After four or five songs comes Drums. The others leave the stage, and Billy and Mickey put on a show. That's when all those other drums you noticed are put to work. Also there's an instrument of Mickey's design called The Beam that is kind of an enormous pedal steel guitar, with a MIDI attached and programmable repeater technology. After Drums, the others come back for Space. This can be incredibly bizarre with each person playing different tunings and rhythms. Sometimes it can come together into a serious jam, but mostly it's just what the name implies. Eventually, you hear a lick or a riff indicating the song that will build out of Space. They generally play three or four songs after Space, one of which is a Jerry "weeper," a song where Jerry pours his soul out both in his vocals and his guitar solos. There is almost always an encore, and on rare occasions two. If the final song was a rocker, the encore will be mellow, and vice versa. Throughout the show they alternate between Jerry and Bobby songs, with Phil and Brent (and later Vince) taking an occasional turn.

"Uh oh, here we go". Yup. When Jerry steps back for that second solo it was as good as any solo anywhere, anytime by anybody. And I mean anybody, Jimi Hendrix, Eddie Van Halen, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, Roy Buchanan, Steve Kimock, Mick Taylor, Warren Haynes, Derek Trucks, Duane Allman, ANYBODY. Jerry on his "Tiger" Guitar, it just doesn't get any better. This concert was held at Alpine Valley in Wisconsin. My friends and I were at Alpine in 1988, during a major heat wave, and it was part of the best ten days in a row in my life. AWESOME VENUE.

Hey L33, sorry I missed the premiere. I had a work thing. Great to see this reaction, glad you dug it! With each Dead reaction, you seem to be stepping a little further on the bus. 🙃 On behalf of Dead Heads everywhere, welcome aboard! Summer of 89 through Spring 90 was an amazing era for The Dead. They were truly firing on all cylinders. Brent Mydland was their Keyboardist from late 1979 through the summer of 90. He was an amazing talent, as well. I love the texture his Hammond B3 organ brought to their sound. The two drummers really love playing polyrhythms together. When they first met, they would practice by putting their arms around each other and they would play rudiments, one playing the left hand and the other playing the right. That's how they learned to synchronize. One of these days, I'll ask you to react to one of their "Rhythm Devils" drum segments. You'll get to check out Mickey on "The Beam" which is a trip.

Who knew we were about to lose Brent shortly after this?! I really don’t feel Jerry was ever quite the same after Brent passed. He LOVED playing with Brent, and Brent would “push” Jerry, which most wouldn’t! 89 was probably the height of the Brent years, for me. That “beautiful guitar” is “Tiger” which Jerry logged more time on than any other. He had an almost identical Irwin guitar named “Rosebud”.

Jerry passed in 1995. In 2023, "Dead and Company", the last incarnation of the band, performed their final show. John Mayer took Jerry's part and Oteil Burbridge played bass. Bob Weir on rhythm guitar (now very grey with thick mustache) was still with them as well as Bill Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart on drums. Jeff Chimenti on keyboards.

Billy got sick back in 2021. Jay Lane replaced him intermittently in 21 and 22. Billy's illness is why they decided 2023 would be their final tour. He didn't play at all on it. But Oteil, who is not only a bassist, but also a drummer, would stay on stage and join Jay and Mickey for Drums. That final tour was easily their best. They had become really tight and I saw an interview with Oteil where he said he had been standing back and just playing his part, but when he wanted to do certain Jerry songs, like China Doll and If I Had the World to Give, someone told him, "Man, you just got to step up and do it, don't ask for permission." That new attitude really took hold, because he just killed it on this last tour. And Jeff and John also developed a real chemistry too. Reminded me of Brent and Jerry. I wish Jeff had gotten a chance to play with Jerry, that would have been awesome.

When Garcia is on he is on 🔥. He sometimes goes off even more on Deal with the Jerry Garcia Band especially during 1988-1990 thereabouts. Check out the Deal from the Jerry Garcia Band double live album “Jerry Garcia Band” that has the cartoon drawing of a show on the cover. Check out the song “Cats Under the S꙰T꙰A꙰R꙰S꙰ “ from the album “How Sweet it Is”. The only band member that was added since 1965 was Brent Mydland. Bob just looked relatively young compared to the way Jerry looked relatively older for his age. Hard to believe Jerry was only about 47 when this was filmed.

It's pretty amazing to think that Jerry was a couple of weeks shy of his 47th birthday here; he looked about 20 years older than that. His lifestyle really took a toll on him physically (and sadly he'd be gone just 6 years after this). But he could play and sing with so much soul, right up until the end.

not so fun fact: to expand on the keyboards that the fellow deadhead posted below me. originally pigpen was the og keyboard/piano and was basically the founder of at the time the warlocks. it was his connections that got them into the blues clubs. jerry never wanted the fame as i understand and didnt like being considered the leader of the bad (open to be wrong here). anyways they say the keys are cursed as they went through many. some of my favorite jams would have Keith and bruse hornsby. bruse being the one who wrote 'thats just the way it is' that 2pac would make a version of. its my understanding brent never felt like he was apart of the band after joining late. he suffered from depression and drug use. unfortunately at his last show you can see him shooting up on stage. some of the songs he wrote for the band will forever be my favorite and some make me cry everytime. such as 'i wil take you home'. one version he has his daughter on stage and sings to her, its so beautiful. ❤

With most bands of any genre using two drummers it is to increase the sound of the drums. With Billy and Mickey it is their own group in many aspects, with one playing one style and another playing another for most of a song. They were a group among themselves. Often, Deal would come not long before the midsession of drums and space in the second set that highlighted the work of the two behind the drums.

Great choice! This is a great jam but it's pretty standard for what these guys did on a nightly basis except maybe the last couple of years. As for the apparent age differences, when the band started in '65 Weir was only 17 and Kreutzmann was 18. Meanwhile, Phil was 24 and Jerry was 23. Brent came along much later and he was several years younger than the rest. Jerry was operating in 'dog years' which caused him to age faster.

Astute observations L33! The drummers are so in sync they have perfected the two-man flam. Jerry always loved this song. It was the first song on the first side of his first solo album *Garcia.* When performed live, it always closed the first set and he always put extra effort into it. Arguably...some of his hottest versions were not with the Dead but with the Jerry Garcia Band. All of Robert Hunter's lyrics are spot on. It is breathtaking. 🌹

Jerry Garcia did a lot of drugs, which eventually killed him and keyboardist Brent Mydland, but it also made for good nights and bad nights. As Jerry went, the band went. A bad Jerry night was flat and a little boring. A good night could be spectacular. Every night they’d play about 45 minutes to an hour to warm up and get a feel for the crowd. Then they’d break for half an hour and design the show, decide what they were going to play. Then they’d play the main show. Truly unique.

Our crew drove all the way to California to catch the shows at Ventura--- only to arrive and see "Grateful Dead canceled" on the marquis at the venue. Pre-internet, so there was no way to get the word out. Turns out Jerry had slipped into a diabetic coma from an infected tooth, and was hear death... So this video today was only three years later--- all the heavy partying and drugs and touring took a toll on Jerry ~ 💜

To be as great as Jerry was nightly must have been a huge burden. I never saw him once mail it in not even close. The boys were hard working to say the least.

Nah, just Brent Midland is young because their keyboard players kept dying on them.....the dead were really shitty at doing interventions, like "hey, buddy....we need to talk...u have a problem"

Yeah, that was their ethos. No one in the Dead family was supposed to tell anyone else what to do or how to live.

Ahhhh ok thank you. Was wondering what was happening there lol that is a shame though. But if that was their ethos like Dave said, then it is what it is I suppose.

L33, I know it’s because I can’t stretch my social security benefit to pay you for a reaction. But when are you going to start reacting to the vision of the band and producer! Live visions are dressed up for fans that know the music thoroughly before their concert!! Studio versions are just better, of course that is only my opinion!! Another opinion, I like solos as much as the next, but they take away from the original version, or it would be on the studio version, ie YES, the concert version are seldom extended substantially from the studio version. Of course, as I wrote above, it’s only my opinion!;)
