Another day, another dead. These guys can really do any genre and kill it. I know the quality isn't the best but it's totally worth it. I loved the vocals and harmonica from the guy I didn't know

Dig The Pig! Ron "Pigpen" McKernan doing Lead Vocals and Harmonica, Jerry, Phil, Bobby, Billy and Mickey just doing their thing, despite the shabby technology of the day. "Easy Wind" was a true Pigpen song, bluesy and right up his alley. Tom's last name is Con-Stan-ten, who I actually got to meet and talk to for about ten minutes at one of his solo shows in the 80's.

This was the Dead as I first saw them. Pigpen was the original front man of the band. His background was the blues. The band took off in a lot of different directions so his role was diluted over time. Unfortunately, he is one of the less well known members of the 27 club. He died in 1973. He was a great performer and added a lot to their concerts. Listen to Turn On Your Lovelight from Live/Dead for a great example.

Absolutely! The Dead is best enjoyed with a “roadmap” of direction from Deadheads! I’ll include a sizzling deep show from 77….5/17/77 Tuscaloosa AL. One of the best Jack A Roe, Samson and Delilah, and Half Step Mississippi… I’ve heard. Did a post show in the parking lot with my 2 friends, emptied our pockets, came up with $19 and change and did the only logical thing…head for Atlanta for 2 more nights!! Ahh, youth!

KQED is the local PBS station in San Francisco (Pink Floyd did an amazing set for them as well; probably here on you tube somewhere). While Pigpen was instrumental in the band's history & development...his deteriorating health coupled with their musical growth/expansion sort of made his days numbered.

Also a great version on the festival express video. Also, there's another TV appearance with this one somewhere. Really funky song. Pig was their frontman in the early days. He's a member of the 27 club - he died of liver disease in 1973 from memory.

Yeah, I don't think he's rated as highly as he should be as a harp player. Every time I've heard his harp, it's just been really good - really authentic and technically good as well.

The visuals were basically projecting lava lamps onto a screen and were very trippy at the time for those who had ingested certain substances. Floyd used the same effects in their early days

Thanks for putting up with the shakey quality, glad you dug the song. I wanted you to hear some pigpen. This was during their transitional period going from long psychedelic "primal dead" to more song oriented country blues folk americana. Easy Wind leans towards primal dead, but more structured. Really cool tune. Plus gotta love Pig on that harp.

Pigpen was the original frontman. There are several great videos featuring him from the early 70s. Mr. Charlie from the Beat Club, Europe 72 and Hard to Handle from the Chateau d'Herouville, France 6-21-71 are great video. Obviously, tons of great audio of Pig from those formative years. He was an old soul gone way too early.

The album “Workingman’s Dead” is such a great, gritty work! Not as “polished” as “American Beauty”, but that’s part of the appeal for me! Can you imagine a band these days releasing two such fine albums as those in the same year these days?! Ain’t happening!

We used to go to the bar and shoot pool for hours. It was a small bar . Maybe a dozen customers at a time. More or less depending.. So... The jukebox. My brother would do themes. When Jerry Garcia died the theme was anything that had to do with "Dead". i hear a great song I don't know so i ask him what the theme was. Dead guitar players covering Dead guitar player's songs. The song ... Voodoo Child. ...That was my introduction to Stevie Ray Vaughan in 1995.

I've been listening to The Dead since 69. I don't consider myself a true Deadhead having seen them only once in 1980. I feel your missing out on a lot of great studio cuts by only reacting to live Dead. Attics of my life - Easy Wind - Brokedown Palace are just a few of many. Other Dead related bands were Kingfish with Bob, New Riders of the purple sage, Jerry Garcia Band with Nicky Hopkins are all great. Dead & Company will be doing 24 shows in Vegas at The Sphere. Keep on keeping on.
