For Billy Cobham's drum solo vehicle with the original Mahavishnu lineup (McLaughlin, Cobham, Laird, Hammer, and Goodman -1971 to 1973), hear "One Word" on the Birds Of Fire Album. Jeff Beck used to do an instrumental cover of "Eternity's Breath" live, and had former Mahavishnu members Jan Hammer and N.M.Walden on his fusion era albums. Gayle Morin was Chick Corea's wife. In 1973 there was a great double bill tour of Mahavishnu, who had Billy Cobham on drums and Jerry Goodman on violin, and Frank Zappa, who had Ponty on violin, George Duke, and Ruth Underwood. They mention watching Cobham's solo on the video "The Drummers of Frank Zappa".

This is one of the great McLaughlin/Mahavishnu tracks. It's funky, heavy, melodic and tricky as hell. The main riff grooves incredibly hard.

I'm a long time fan of Mahavishnu and John McLaughlin. If you like fusion, you should check out the album Bitches Brew (1969)by Miles Davis and a bunch of jazz legends, including McLaughlin. It's considered the first (or perhaps second) fusion album. In a Silent Way, also by Miles Davis is sometimes considered the first. Anyway Bitches Brew is groundbreaking. My favorite cut is Miles Runs the Voodoo Down. Try out a little John Coltrane in your spare time, too It's not fusion, it's Coltane, an entire genre itself. Live at the Village Vanguard, 1961 or Afro Blue Impressions or First Meditations or A love Supreme. And much more.I enjoy your channel. You're adventurous!

I always argue for "New York on my Mind" from John McLaughlin. It's one of those songs that has all of the technical prowess but it's so melodic and beautiful and flows so well.

Heard the name for years, Mahavishnu Orchestra, but I’ve never heard the actual music, until now. Thanks. The drums were insane. The vocals felt strange to me, like a swing era big band or 50’s jingle vocal group. But with all the other genre bending going on, what the heck, put it next to the kitchen sink. With great art, whenever you come back to it, you notice something new, gain a greater appreciation for what it offers, a timelessness that speaks to the humanity of every generation.

-Narada is in his early 20s on this album. He went on to have a successful career before going on to win grammys as Whitney Houston's producer among others. Gayle Moran is Chick Corea's wife. Birds of Fire is on the cover of this album, have a closer look.

The bass player (Ralphe Armstrong) was just 16 years old on this album. And he beat out Jaco Pastorius for the job. Think about that for a minute before you decide just how good the bass player is on this one.

Blessings be upon you! You have listened to the Bhudda incarnated to our time. John McLaughlin is the spritial epitome of rock and jazz. I had the privelege of seeing him in another of his incarnations (I'm being metaphoric, or am I?) with his later band "Mahavishnu". It was a spiritial experience (and I'm not religious). John and the rest of the band played the set with their eyes closed most of the time. I am reminded of this everytime I listen to his masterpieces. Visions of Emeralds Beyond came out in my senior year of high school. I'm 67.

McLaughlin stole Ponty after being blown away seeing him perform while opening for Zappa’s group in eight shows in 1973. Just perfect timing since he was forming a new concept for his next album anyway. Btw Gayle Moran was Chick Corea’s wife. It’s wild how move able all those top fusion players were back in the day and how many genres they explored.
@jamdfig78788 ай бұрын
McLaughlin had pursued Ponty for the original Mahavishnu Orchestra but was prevented from joining because of immigration issues. He then asked Jerry Goodman to play violin after hearing him play with The Flock. They're both great!
