Welcome to the world of Mike Patton Lolli, known as the man of a thousand voices for a very good reason. Can do things with his vocals that are beyond comprehension. Can sing in a low quiet whisper to a high pitched demonic scream in a second. This man is a vocal phenom and does not get the credit he very much deserves.

He did an album called 'Mondo Cane'. It's his arrangements of 1950's Italian songs and performed with a full orchestra. It's insanely good and probably the purest representation of his full voice in one album. The studio session Faith No More did with the BBC just a few years ago is also really good. It has some of their more recent tracks as well as a really good cover of a Burt Bacharach song.

He's from my small hometown and his first band (Mr Bungle) was a local band that played around town when I was younger, so it's always really cool to see how successful he's been. He's incredibly talented and, as you mentioned, he was very young in this video so his stuff from later in life is even more wild and weird.
@Bobbias9 күн бұрын
Hell yes! You absolutely need to cover more of his stuff. Mike Patton is one of those vocal wizards who knows how to access nearly every corner of his voice and isn't afraid to use it all. But beyond that, his sense of musicality means he knows when to pull out all the stops, and when to hold back and keep things within a certain style.
@johnplaysgames31209 күн бұрын
Lolly! So glad you found your way to Mike Patton. If you choose to dive further into the Mike Patton rabbit hole (and please do!), prepare to have a new vocal crush. What's great is that he not only can sing in a thousand voices, countless styles, many octaves, and multiple languages, but he's also never met a side project he didn't like. Dude's in more bands playing in more genres than any singer on the planet. No joke. Want to hear what it would sound like if Slayer played dark carnival jazz for Looney Tunes cartoon soundtracks? Mike's got you (Mr. Bungle). Need some 1960s Italian pop songs in your life? Mike's got an orchestra-backed album for that (Mondo Cane). Feel like listening to some hard rock with Mike singing through three different mics and a gas mask? Mike's way ahead of you (Tomahawk). You want math metal? Easy listening love songs and Burt Bacharach covers? Funk metal? Vocalese sound-painting as the soundtrack to a French comic book? Hip-hop and beatboxing? Experimental "music" using only voice and a tape recorder to make weird sounds and soundscapes? The list goes on and on. Mike is prolific at a level beyond any artist I've ever encountered and is always pushing the boundaries. If you'd like to get a taste of Mike Patton pushing vocal styles and shifts and his band pushing musical changes well beyond their traditional borders, I enthusiastically suggest you check out something from the first Mr. Bungle album. The album version of "Carousel" -- I say album version bc the John Zorn production on that album is as much a band member as George Martin was for the Beatles -- is a good one for reacting (since it's the most KZbin friendly, language-wise). If you want a live track that's still frenetic but slightly less dark carnival crazy, "Air Conditioned Nightmare" live at the Bizarre Festival is a good vid on YT. And if you don't care about reacting and just want to check out a Mr. Bungle track on your own, I personally love "My Ass Is On Fire" but, as a vocal coach/artist, you might enjoy something like "Slowly Growing Deaf" even more. Honestly though, not just as one music and singing enthusiast to another much more talented one, but also just simply music-lover to music-lover, human to human, even if you don't ever react to another Mike Patton track in a video again, PLEASE do yourself a favor and listen to the first Mr. Bungle album (their self-titled debut from their very brief stint on Warner Bros) on your own. I promise you, it's unlike anything you've ever heard and will blow your hair to the back of the room. In a good way. At the very least, both the freedom and the expertise of it might inspire something in you (as it did for many of us). Sorry about this long comment, Lolly. I like very many singers and all kinds of bands, but there is no artist I get as passionate about as I do Mike Patton. I will evangelize for him all day, especially to other people who love art and music and discovering artists who can't be contained by either genre or tradition. Fr fr. SIDE NOTE: You'll see a lot of people who know only three Mike Patton songs recommend Faith No More's cover of the Commodores' song, "Easy." For a singer/artist/reactor, especially one just discovering Mike Patton, I don't. It's a good song and their rendition is fine... but it's basically at the level of a really good karaoke cover of the original. They didn't add anything to it or make it their own in any way. It's just a faithful version of the original that, tbh, won't really add much to your understanding of Mike as a singer or your appreciation of the inventiveness of him as an artist or FNM as a band. Imo, reacting to "Easy" early on in a reaction rabbit hole is a great way to kill the enthusiasm for checking out more Mike Patton bc the song is so aggressively serviceable. Imo. Ymmv.

One of the things Mike Patton is known for is his remarkable vocal range. There are compilation videos that show off his absurd collection of voices, from an ominous rumble up to an ear-piercing shriek, through all kinds of yapping and barking and crooning in between. As always, it was informative to hear your insights into what's going on. I've seen this performance several times and it had never occurred to me that his erratic lurching all over the stage was actually part of the vocal performance!
