"Green-Eyed Lady" was a great song that was different for the times that it was in. Another great song you shoild check out is "Ride, Captain Ride" by Blues Image. It is a song that tells a history lesson but many people didn't pick up on the meaning of the song until a year, or two later.

“Don’t call us, we’ll call you” is my favorite Sugarloaf song. It has the distinct honor of not only lifting a riff from the Beatles “I Feel Fine” and actually mentioning what they did in the lyrics.! If you want to do something interesting, play the Beatles and Sugarloaf cuts back to back.

Twelve years old in 1970, and *this is the first time I've EVER heard the album/"long" edit of this song* !! The AM radio single is part of my permanent pop music memorybank. It's even tighter and more cutting, thanks to a few judicious edits. This segues well with "Long Cool Woman In a Black Dress." And the James-Bond-movie-music influence on both tunes is undeniable.

I’m commenting on this one in particular because I has “forgotten” this song existed, but I still sang the title to myself. Sugarloaf were a local band from Denver / Boulder area who made it big for a short while. Not quite a 1 hit wonder, their follow up single "Tongue In Cheek" off their 2nd album Spaceship Earth (better album than this 1st one) almost made top 20. A few years later they hit again with "Don't Call Us (We'll Call You)". First concert I ever attended they opened for Deep Purple, perfect match, two heavy, organ, guitar driven bands with awesome drummers.
@ArniePorter4 ай бұрын
Thanks Lee. Good call on how much they sounded like ELP. Great early use of the keyboard / synth (Hammond B3) and jazz/prog rock fusion sound before Keith Emerson, Rick Wakeman, Tony Banks etc. really made keyboard solos such a huge part of the early 70’s rock concert experience. Sugar Loaf was definitely the answer to the question of who were the biggest one hit wonders at that time but they ended up being two hit wonders five years later with the song “Don’t call us, We’ll call You” which was about the process of recording Green Eyed Lady and the failed attempt to get CBS to distribute the record. The song was written for Jerry Corbetta’s (who played the organ solo and sang lead) girlfriend Kathy who his bandmates referred to as the green-eyed lady. 1970 was kind of a transition year in rock/pop with the end of the Beatles, the rising popularity of solo artists like James Taylor, Carol King, Elton John etc and Prog Rock with bands like ELP, Yes, Genesis, Procul Harum and Pink Floyd as well as stadium rock concerts with huge sets and bigger much louder amps. It was cool that a song like this could slip in there and rise to #3 in the charts by a band nobody had ever heard of and wouldn’t really hear of again for another five years and then were gone a few years later. It’s such a cool song. Glad you enjoyed it.
