Where the hell have y'all been hiding these two tracks?? This debut gets better and better to me with each song I hear. I only have one more to go and we will be done with this album! Both of these tracks were absolutely blistering for them.... so damn good. Elliot Randall in the first track is fire!! and Jim is just steady as she goes... such a great combo.

My birthday is in July so I was 17 and 18 that year and I wholeheartedly agree with your statement. We may be old now, but we had the best music when we were young.

Kings is one of my favorites Steely Dan songs. It’s so much fun to sing along with. That guitar lead is unbelievable. 40 some years of listening to it I still hear subtleties for the first time, every time.

Lee, your reactions and critiques are some of the best on KZbin. you are getting such an education and understanding of some of the best music ever produced. It blows me away someone as young as you appreciating music that I have been listening to for my 65 years of life. you are spot on on most of your reactions. I am looking forward to when you feature the Doobie Brothers. Of course they have some great hits, but they’re deep cuts are probably some of their best stuff and I would put them in a similar genre of music as Steely Dan. Please start featuring the Doobie Brothers, you won’t regret it. I promise you. Much success to your channel. I always look forward to seeing you.

So dang good I have to throw my head back & howl at the moon. I always loved Steely Dan, but since coming to your channel I've become obsessed with them. Wowser, I'm gobsmacked. Great reaction, Lee. Indeed fully satisfied...maybe I'll give a second listen. Blessings all.

Absolutely unhinged, incredible guitar solos on both of these. Kings is played by Elliot Randall (who did Reelin in the years, Green Earrings among others) and Change of the Guard is Skunk of course.

'Kings' has lead guitar by studio ace Elliott Randall - note how he starts with a chromatic moving downward idea, then soon follows it w/ an ascending whole tone scale pattern phrase towards the end. 'Change Of The Guard' has IMHO one of Jeff 'Skunk' Baxter's finest Steely Dan solos. Their 1972 debut album is their most Rock n Roll oriented record.

Deep cuts and lesser known bands fueled the rise of FM radio in the 70s. It was called Underground and lead to the AOR (album oriented radio) format later in the decade.

I started hearing this album on the radio in 1972, and I’m finishing it now, with L33. Do It Again and Reelin’ In the Years were the ones then. I always loved Fagen’s vocals and Steely Dan’s swing. Dirty Work and these two are enjoyable, also. What a great album.

The debut album by Yes is criminally underrated. If I remember correctly, you loved almost every song on Yes. I was in 8th grade when Can't Buy A Thrill came out. The radio stations didn't play hardly anything as I was too busy buying Chicago, Yes, and Neil Diamond at that time. The Royal Scam was my first Steely Dan album. Still their best album.

I get what you’re saying but it’s almost better that their arrangements got more sophisticated as they went along. Just like the Beatles or any other great band, they kept presenting stuff to the public and saying “oh you like that? Well check this out”. Also if you listen to what was coming out in 72, this sounds pretty damn good. I can’t think of a record from that time that sounded better

I came to the channel for the Phish reacts, I stayed for the Steely Dan reacts. It's nice to hear something from Can't Buy a Thrill, one I never really dug into (other than the tracks on Decade) for some reason. I'm going to have to rectify that.

The first two Dan albums sound so different than a lot of what the public knows (aja and gaucho). It’s almost like two different but equally amazing bands. Songs like Boston Rag, King of the World, etc are so much heavier and edgier than their later stuff

I can't recall the source, but I read where Randall said playing the descending notes in his "Kings" solo was meant to evoke someone caught in a downward fall - whether literal of figurative.

I think it’s from further back in history. King Richard the Lionhearted or something like that. Someone who knows more about history could analyze it better I’m sure. I suspect they liked that one could make the link to Richard Nixon, John F Kennedy as well
