I know Metallica from years of listening to them, but what about a drummer who's never heard them before? Let's hear his take on one of Metallica's most famous songs!

To my knowledge, this was the first viral "Hears for the First Time" videos, and the one that set the stage for the awesome series we have today. As you saw, they hadn't quite figured out the format yet, but it was still an excellent video. More akin to the ones Drumeo puts out today as the "How Fast Can ______ Learn a Song" series (like Portnoy with Tool). Something that I see almost always get missed with reactions to this video is that they did a bit of sneaky editing to make it punchier. He says at the end that this was his second take, and implies that he gave it a second listen after what was presumably a failed first attempt. That doesn't make this any less impressive, of course (he had most of it after a single listen, and locked in on the form completely after just one more), but it does make it seem more superhuman than the reality. I'm glad that Drumeo has become more transparent with the process since then, because seeing the STRUGGLE to get things right is such an important part of being a musician. It's encouraging for all us normies to see these world class drummers go through the same kind of issues we do, and how they're able to overcome them with perseverance, and with humility. Leaves us with the impression that yes, I *CAN* do this, even if it isn't easy; it's not easy for them, either. And as others have said, Larnell is a jazz fusion drummer, which is why the video he references at the beginning is him learning a fusion song on the fly. Brilliant player.

The classic Larnell learns Sandman. One of the original mind blowing Drumeo videos. The man listens one fricking time and then proceeds to throw down a 80-90% accurate cover solely from memory. Fascinating 👏🏼

The top comments on that video had a "he got it well right at the start when he asked for more volume." And I just have to agree, blast that tune man!

Larnell Lewis knows and plays a lot of different music but he’s in a jazz fusion band called snarky puppy, their album called we like it here is amazing and he learned most of the songs on a 7 hour plane ride to go record it
@Bobbias
@Bobbias Күн бұрын
More precisely, he learned most of them on that plane ride because Snarky Puppy's usual drummer at the time couldn't make it and Larnell was called in as a backup on short notice.

I totally agree with the "they're practically rock" take. They were absolutely metal when they came out, and some of their stuff definitely still counts as metal in my mind, but I'd definitely personally consider them right on the edge of what's rock vs metal.

Love the original video and love the reaction! I've never drummed in my life so i really appreciate your explanations where you see the drummer thinking, filling, missing and how those actually prove the situation. Been waiting for this.

If it helps to know, Larnell is probably one of if not the best session drummers on the planet. As everyone else mentioned Snarky Puppy, you should react to their song Lingus (We Like it Here). You’ll see what he can do after learning that song on a 7 hour flight to the Netherlands. You should also react to his listen and single take of Chick’s Pain, by Chick Corea. But his daily gig? Larnell Lewis is a Gospel/church drummer.

I would say the Black album on Metallica is Hard Rock. And everything before that they would be considered metal.

You missed his improvised fill coming out of the second chorus. He was already getting locked in coming into the intro. He’s that good! Have a listen to the second chorus and especially his fill after the chorus.

It must be the rare YT drummer who doesn't already know Larnell Lewis from the viral Lingus video. Even though Corey Henry stole that show, Larnell came a close second IMO.

Seriously, Larnell's drumming on Lingus is as much the stuff of legends as Corey's solo is.

i always love how different drummers vocalise or remember certain beats n stuff. there is for example riccardo merlinis dragonforce drumeo video where he just had the most hilarious names for the beats. and my favorite is just thomas lang doin the lux etherna. sadly they took them all down which is just 😭😭

'80s Metallica absolutely was metal. The black album, Load of Sh!t, & Another Load of Sh!t, thru the '90s was rock (with plenty booze & coke!). After Jason had enough & left, there were some more metallish moments, but by that point they're old for doing the sharp & angry metal thing... It is what it is. LOL Larnell is a truly *top-tier* player tho, and a top-tier human being. Just a great dude all round. :)

Metallica would have been in the “thrash metal” category. My preference in “metal” ends when i can no longer understand the vocals. I bit of screaming/growling/gravely stuff is okay but when the whole song is that i cant do it. Not sure what the sub-genre of metal that would be but that is where my taste of metal ends. I find Metallica is very much not past that.
