The album cover has pictures representing each song on the album. Mad Man Moon is shown as the cloudy horse in front of the moon. This is a beautiful song and is speculated to be Tony's reaction to Peter Gabriel leaving the group. I agree with you that the piano is spectacular. An intricate but amazing song.

Cathedral Pines, Long Island NY. I was there when I first noticed Steve’s guitar wail on the section: “so I pretended to have wings for my arms” It instantly changed my tastes in music at age 10.

I think this song is really underrated and it's probably my personal favorite on the album. The musical phrasing on its own feels like a kind of melancholia looking for a transforming energy and it does just that. Oh, and if you go to the next album in this time period, WIND AND WUTHERING, the song BLOOD ON THE ROOFTOPS is an essential, written by Steve Hackett and Phil Collins.

Love, love, love that stream of consciousness 'Blood on the Rooftops'. Don't forget 'Volcano'. So many layers. In the lyrics is that Phil on the stage who better 'start doin' it right'?

I agree with you 100% on this song, and disagree with you 100 % on Wind and Wuthering. I can't find anything to love about that album, it sounds like leftover ideas rejected from previous albums to me. I'm also the only person in the world that doesn't venerate "The Lamb" album.

@@christinerobinson9372 You are not the only one who doesn't venerate "The Lamb" (there is at least one other), but it does make me question your musical taste. How can "Rooftop" be classified as rejected "leftover ideas"? For me the music is great, it has an interesting structure and point of view. The subtle anti-war theme is so Genesis and the stream of conscientiousness about TV shows is brilliant. Individual taste. (btw, 'Supper's Ready' is a masterpiece of "leftover ideas rejected from previous albums". Making 'lemonade' is the band's "thing")

Man, I was obsessed with this album back in the day. This track was one of my favourites - just a gorgeously constructed piece. And Phil’s vocals are awesome. Such a melancholy vibe. Love it - thanks for the reaction.

Perfectly constructed, sumptuously arranged, sonically sophisticated. A true Tony Banks masterpiece, there's so many layered parts. A well-regarded genesis track, but it still doesn't get as much love as it deserves, imo.

Mad Man Moon is one of those songs that tends to be forgotten when people talk about their favourite old Genesis songs, but it's right up in my top five. I went to see them when they toured this album. Sadly, they didn't play MMM, but I got my money's worth that night all the same.

The track I like to call 'the album's diamond hiding in plain sight'. No fireworks, no pyrotechnics: just a beautiful, soulful piano driven song. I suppose we can call it a ballad, as it sounds deceptively simple. But notice how the many themes seamlessly blend into one another. Few artists do this as well as Tony Banks. He is such a gifted harmoniser. Glad you picked this song. Thanks for a great reaction. 🐝

Tony is a classically trained pianist. This is a Tony Banks composition, music and lyrics. That last line, "One has to learn to disbelieve the Sea" slays me. Have you explored Chopin? I can tell that Tony is a fan of Chopin. I think you will enjoy the "Trespass" album next, which will lead you gently to "Nursery Crymes" and "FoxTrot".

Have not heard Chopin mentioned but have Shostakovich, Mahler, and Sibelius. Interesting choices for composers which I also enjoy immensely. One reviewer mentioned she felt Genesis music was very impressionistic (think Ravel and Debussy) and I agree. They paint pictures with sound.

As a recommendation, try to dig a bootleg live recording called Genesis Live at Earl's Court from the '77, which was a radio broadcast, and was here on yt before (idk if it still is). It's from the W&W tour, has a great sound quality for not being an official record (I wish it were), and it's way better than seconds out.

He's my favorite drummer, but one of Phil's best vocal performances is the obscure song "Heathaze" from 1980's Duke, written by Tony Banks, but Phil's passion driven by his failing marriage makes this a standout in my mind. You should also watch the video for his solo song "Another Day in Paradise" to see the real Phil Collins. Keep on proggin'!

Another super reaction man. Love the fact that you really appreciate the composition of this track and album in general. As you know Peter had left at this point, but this album is possibly their best piece of work due to the fact that it was their first without Gabriel. This is very much Tony's song, but Phil's vocals are superb with these lovely lyrics. May I suggest Wind And Wuthering the follow up album to this, if you react to the last suite of three tracks, Unquiet Slumbers For The Sleepers/ In That Quiet Earth/Afterglow, three very short tracks that bleed into each other, again proving that the band could do it without Gabriel and produce some stunning material. Well done again on appreciation of Prog Rock classics. Ripples is a gorgeous track from this A Trick Of The Tail album too, as is the spectacular Los Endos. Look forward to more reactions from this beautiful record, and their earlier work their back catalogue is just superb.

A piano ballad, indeed! Phil is amazing to come in and sing lead with such confidence on this first album without Gabriel. Some say this is Tony pining about Peter leaving to chase mirages, looking for greener grass (or cabbages). With all the flute/synth sounds woven in to echo Peter's flute, I tend to believe it. It was following this album that Peter answered Tony with his first solo album and his rousing song 'Solsbury Hill' to explain what that 'the smile on my face' meant and leaving Genesis with all the cumbersome record industry machinery. Great tune you must review. Next from Genesis (wait, what tune was blocked?) should be 'Supper's Ready' (or was that it?).
