Genesis is the Best...They combine classical music style with Rock, their music is structured, melodic, not flashy, pure quality composed to last like the old classical music by the 3 greatest, Bach, Mozart, and Beethoven ...Tony Banks is a gifted composer and this song is another jewel to be cherished and enjoyed...You can listen to a great Genesis song countless of time and it never gets old

Proof positive that the departure of the great Peter Gabriel did not mean that this group of musicians wasn’t capable of greatness. This in spite of the direction they wound up going in later, which though less to my taste still produced some great music as well.

A Trick Of The Tail is a majestic work of brilliance. They had a lot to prove as this was the first LP without Peter Gabriel and Phil definitely sounds a lot like Pete on this record. I know both of them long time , Yes and Genesis - for me Genesis is the most beloved , too ...the reason I think must be the more melancholic touch , that Genesis represents - Yes is "spiritual" some way and Genesis for me touches the Heart and always transports a melancholically note with it , some kind of in german one would say "Weltschmerz" in the moste positiv way - a soft Sadness of the heart - wonderful . Maybe becouse I heard Collins Solo "Face Value" during my first lovesickness with the age of 16..? Afterwards I get to know Genesis and Collins Voice was "marked" with the message already in my heart - but I think its a basic feeling everybody has while listening Genesis

I guess the emotion I experienced when I first heard this album was one of relief. Peter's departure hit Genesis fans greatly, and I was no exception. Of course no internet in those days, so little snippets of information and lots of rumours would circulate in the music press about the process of finding a replacement. When it was announced that Phil would sing there were many doubters and fans worried whether it would work. So to hear 'Dance On The Volcano' then 'Entangled' (my favourite Genesis song probably) and then 'Squonk'! My word, why were we worried? This is a great song from Tony Banks, and Lex should definitely listen to it, preferably the whole album on Patreon as you guys deserve to be able to listen to another Genesis album in full in your off time.

I have been listening to Genesis for over 40 years and I still get goosebumps with parts of certain songs ( 9/8 section of Supper’s Ready, live version of Cinema Show from ‘Seconds Out’, ‘Los Endos’, Firth of fifth to name a few). As others have said, the entire album is amazing. You should listen to the entire album track by track, make sure you leave the epic Los Endos to the last as it reprises themes from other songs. Rick Beato named this album as no 13 in this top 40 albums of all time, he said he listens to this at least once a month. Of course Lex needs to listen to this one, I think she will love it.

Andy Edwards, a prog drummer who also has an excellent KZbin channel, stationed in England, has a great couple of recent videos called "The English Aesthetic", which, he says, permeates English prog bands, but not necessarily Canadian prog bands, and which may account for the fact that Rush doesn't sound like Genesis, Yes, King Crimson, Renaissance, Strawbs and the other English progressive bands who fill the albums with their particular aesthetic. It is an insightful set of videos which I know will titillate your mind's ear. Totally agree with you that this album still have a Gabriel vibe. This song was particularly good. Andy Edwards also has a video that says that prog peaked in '73 or maybe '74. "Tales" kinda proved you can't top "Close to the Edge", and there is also "Firth of Fifth", "Supper's Ready", "Echoes", "Tarkus", "Pictures at an Exhibition", "In the Court of the Crimson King, etc, etc. even perhaps the extent of Zappa, and still progressing. BTW...That cool XTC song reminded me of several bands at different points. I heard "Barrytown", "Veronica", Weezer and Zappa...as well as Beach Boys. It was a real composite! Also great show.

Love this reaction. This song is probably Genesis most beautiful and heart tugging piece in their catalog.. This album could be a good candidate for Patreon. Wouldn't Lex love this song? The best with Phil on vocals!

I don't know--I like this one a lot, but Ripples, from the same album, is a nearly perfect piece.

It actually took until part way through And Then There Were Three for them to start sounding much different. But apart from Pete's flute breaks, the instrumentalists are pretty much intact until ATTW3. Many Genephiles consider Nursery Cryme to Wind and Wuthering "Hackett Era", because just listen to those fills Hackett layers in the background on this track! The one around "so I pretended to have wings for my arms, and took off in the air" just makes the feel of that moment.

SOSO SWEET! gorgeous metaphors & lyrical imagery! Similarly you haven't tried PFM yet (Italian YES/Genesis). Their "Photos of Ghost" classic album in English if you prefer. There is SO MUCH under the popular radar that typical 70s Progfans won't suggest

Of the Phil Collins period Blood on the Rooftops is probably my favorite song, but this one from this stellar album (definitely listen to all the tracks from it) is probably my second favorite. It's both subtle and sweeping which might be a good description of what Genesis does best and definitely have Lex have a listen with you on a soon to be video.

I think Steve Hackett leaving had the biggest impact

Great reaction! This entire album deserves a listen. My second favorite Genesis album, right behind Selling England By The Pound.

You said it... the structure and classical elements in every masterpiece. I only got into Genesis mid-term yet I didn't like stereotypical 'prog' like Rick Wakeman's random keyboard stuff so I've been mystified by the prog label. These guys went off the theme but it always returned and it was always melodic and musically brilliant. I also got into the Gabriel era, most of which was excellent, but dare I say some was Gabriel being self indulgent. Forget all that, they were brilliant!

Trick of the Tale is a Magestic piece of composition which must be heard in it’s entirety. Thank you 💫❤️☝️
