Maggot Brain was recorded in one take when George Clinton, under the influence of LSD, told guitarist Hazel during the recording session to play as if he had been told his mother was dead: Clinton explained, "I told him to play like his mother had died, to picture that day, what he would feel, how he would make sense of his life, how he would take a measure of everything that was inside him."

This epic was like an anthem for us in our early 70s get HIGH SCHOOL daze. 😊 Seeing them Live & Wild at 15 on stage in 71 blew my mind! Probably the most audacious and outlandish performance I had ever seen up to that point🎉 Funkadelic were like our Black Psychedelic Rock heroes because there were very few other groups like them after Hendrix & Sly Stone.

Eddie Hazel at the start of 1970 was considered one of the best lead players out there and competition for Jimi Hendrix, he's kind of an unknown gem for most people.

As you watched Stop Making Sense, the hired gun keyboard player is Bernie Worell. He was the keyboard player for Funkadelic. The instrumental Ween song Tear of Eddie is a tribute to Mr. Hazel.

This is one of the most incredible masterpieces of guitar ever. The whole band was playing but George Clinton faded them out to focus just on the solo. If you haven't already, look up how this song came about and what inspired Eddie Hazel to play something this deep. There's also some live versions on disc and videos with the full band of Parliament Funkadelic from around 1976 77 but with Mike " Kidd Funkadelic" playing the solo. Also amazing but the original is the legend. RIP beautiful brother Eddie Hazel.

When they reissued the album on CD, they added an alternate mix of this song, which is pretty much the straight-up original band take without all the studio effects and resequencing George Clinton added to the original version. I like the simple mix as much if not more than the heavy effects version.

Nice Maryland hat! The land of my birth. Going to see P-Funk for the fifth time in about two weeks, can't wait. I expect a full on "Maggotbrain", although Mr. Eddie Hazel will not be performing, sadly he has passed. But I keep going back for more because Mr. George Clinton and friends put on an amazing show every time. First saw P-Funk in the 90's, late to the game, but I did see the "Mothership Reunion Show" in 1996 in Central Park NYC, with Mr. William "Bootsy" Collins, and about 25 or more friends on stage at one time. Insane.

With MEMORIAL DAY coming soon. A very appropriate dedication to Vietnam Veterans is "MARCH TO THE WITCHES CASTLE". This was a WAR PROTEST SONG in 1974 that was banned from the airwaves by CONGRESS. 30 YEARS later the DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE PURCHASED THE RIGHTS to this classic, added actual war footage in a dedication video that is played in a loop at the VIETNAM WAR MEMORIAL WALL in WASHINGTON D.C. 24/7. Please use the D.O.D. version for your reaction mind you it is very graffic and disturbing. It is Bernie Worrell ( keyboards) and EDDIE HAZEL/GARY SHIDER on guitar. A cover of "THE BATTLE HYMN of The Republic/ When Johnny Comes Marching Home Again"

From what I know about Eddie, he was a huge Jimi Hendrix fan, among other influences but was adding more Funk and with his own unique approach. I'm pretty sure he was going wild using an Electro Harmonix Memory Man analog delay, which was new at the time, to create those crazy feedback washes.

Eddies that shred. Would those be Shredding Eddies or Eddie Shredders? But to answer your question "What the fuck am I listening to?". I think you are hearing a live recording of a guitar track played by a guitarist, in the moment, under the influence of LSD. Some tracks were added later. That's just my opinion.
