It’s the whole package with Mike. He’s a great drummer and just a fucking cool dude

I love Nickelback. I have seen them live twice and the concerts are superb. I think you are right about the podcast. All those that 'hate 'them are just sheep and follow the trend. Love Mike Portnoy's attitude and sound like a fun guy to be around.

Certainly in Canada, and I think also in the US, the hate stems from them being massively overplayed on radio and tv. There was a period of about a decade where you could not turn on a radio for 15 mins without hearing a Nickleback song. They would drop a new song or album, it would be a huge success, but 6 months later everyone was so sick of hearing it because it was played all day.
@AlessandroSpenga11 ай бұрын
That’s great to know, thank you! Obviously I couldn’t know any of that. Let me say, we get reggaeton and trap music here in Italy 😫 I WISH we had Nickelback on the radio!
@shagrathmostis11 ай бұрын
Same here in the UK. We had a very popular channel similar to old MTV called Kerrang! Literally every other video was nickleback...IE Devil driver, nickleback, Disturbed, nickleback etc. It was so overplayed and saturated the band

Less is more when you want to be liked by a bigger range of fans, and be easily remembered because of the simplicity, giving more money. Overplaying gives more joy, space for creativety, a bigger experience overall for the player and the listener, but requires a kind of atention that few are willing to give these fast and consumable days.

Thank for your comment! I understand your point but I disagree with that. I personally really enjoy just playing pocket, way more than using all my chops. Take for instance a drummer like Steve Jordan. He is amazing and will make people dance. It’s not just about money or being mainstream.
@bettyrose9592 ай бұрын
@@AlessandroSpenga I also disagree also, to a point. As you pointed out the 'pocket.' Any good musician can ride in the pocket, the great ones show you what they can do in it. They will make people dance.

I know some of the "hate" for Nickelback came from overplay on the radio and many felt their songs all sounded the same, that there was no creativity.

More people said the same. That makes sense! Thanks for your comment ✌️

Nickelback are one of the best bands I've ever seen they are up there with def leppard
@GibsonB451211 ай бұрын
Nickelback played the Spider-Man anthem for an early big movie. Fan’s insisted they play it on tour, although they were not licensed to and couldn’t without getting sued, which to the U.S. fans spells sell-out, for some reason. Canada just despised them because Chad married Avril Lavigne, mainly.

We all have our preferences of course, but in this instance I'm totally on Mike's side of the fence :)

You may not agree but I always felt that the Nickelback hate came from the overproduced (for the time) super safe sound which was a bit absurd for an alternative rock band in 2002, right in the middle of the nu metal era. It was an easy target. Also, the songs sounded all the same, very formulaic. Type Nickelback doesn't change on YT ;)
@AlessandroSpenga11 ай бұрын
Well, I actually agree with that 🤘 It definitely is a “radio ready” sound and I understand that may justify most of the hate they get. Classic you love them or you hate them thing!
@JulianFranco-d7o7 ай бұрын
No disrespect to Daniel Adair, But Portnoy's double base version give this song new life and energy. That's what so great about music, it's all interchangeable all you need is the right formula to make it better. Portnoy's took a Nascar race car & turn it into an F1 race car.

Detractors argue that whenever the band steps into a recording studio, their output is purely commercial, lacking genuine artistic depth. They claim that Nickelback consistently fails to produce well-crafted songs

Actually many people hate everything they dont like it 😅

For me, what made Nickleback hard to like is that they had a phase where they wrote a lot of songs about how famous they were. Or at least they had several hits about it, i heard a lot. To me, that just made them pompous, and I've never liked that kind of personality. I didnt even know Nickleback hate was a thing until after i already disliked them. Then i spent a while assuming it was due to that. Still not really sure what it is, but its likely a collection of things. Their music is fine, not exactly my style, but fine. I think their demeanor is what did it.
